Caffe Nelle Cucine: So Much More Than Coffee

To say Caffe Nelle Cucine is just a coffee shop is an understatement. Caffe Nelle Cucine is the local hot spot for all your Holiday dessert ordering. As a special holiday treat, customers who order $25 or more with them receive $5 gift cards to use in the store. The selection for ordering may be a little larger than you think. Not only do they carry a large array of Italian desserts and baked goods in store including cannoli, Italian cookies, struffoli, and fresh baked Italian breads; but they have access to three times as much from their baker in Brooklyn. So you can get that taste of New York delivered to you right here in Blairstown. Their most popular seller this past summer was their Frozen Hot Chocolate; a drink that was hailed as some customers as comparable if not better than Serendipitys in New York. For those who arent coffee drinkers, they also offer a selection of high quality loose teas like Citron Green, Chamomile, Irish Breakfast, Blueberry Decaf, and a seasonal offering that rotates

United Way Launches 2012 Recruitment for Volunteer Tax Preparers

United Way of Northern New Jersey is seeking the assistance of area residents to sign up as volunteer tax preparers to help struggling families in the region during the upcoming tax season. With the help of volunteers this past tax season, United Way and its partners returned $5.8 million in tax refunds to the region. Each year, United Way of Northern New Jersey partners with AARP, the IRS, Newark Now, and NORWESCAP to offer individuals free tax preparation and education about tax credits. This year, the program served residents in Morris, North Essex, and Somerset counties, also saving them an estimated $1.2 million in tax preparation fees. United Way is launching the recruitment campaign for volunteer tax preparers this month in order to have trained volunteers ready in early 2012. This past tax season, 247 community volunteers in the three counties filed 5,998 free tax returns. This year, United Way is also recruiting volunteers in Sussex and Warren counties. A major focus of the United Way work each year is to make families aware of tax credits they may not know to claim -- the IRS says millions of dollars in credits designed specifically for low-and moderateincome working citizens go unclaimed each year across the nation. Last tax season, United Way helped area residents claim $925,000 in earned income tax credits, which are available only to low- and moderate-income working families and individuals. In addition, area residents were eligible for nearly $614,000 in child tax credits and $233,000 in education tax credits. Working together we returned critically-needed funds to our communities, helping our neighbors who, despite working hard, are struggling to afford their basic needs, said John Franklin, chief executive officer of United Way of Northern New Jersey. At United Way, we call these folks ALICE -Asset Limited, Income Constrained, yet Employed. You know them as your local supermarket cashiers, mechanics, and child care workers we rely on their services daily. And the refunds brought back to their wallets are returned to our local economy. United Way research has shown that nearly 30 percent of households in our region are the working poor or ALICE, earning an annual income between $20,000 and $60,000. Due to the high cost of living in the region, individuals and families in these income brackets are not earning enough to be selfsufficient and can not afford the basics, such as housing, food, transportation, health care and child care. Many of our ALICE residents may be eligible for these refunds, and with volunteer help they can find out if they qualify, Franklin said. We know that a family of four earning less than $45,000 in northern New Jersey is fighting to make ends meet and needs every penny to avoid slipping into poverty. Were counting on our volunteers to continue to help us support these families. To register as a tax preparer, visit: TaxPrep4Free.org. About United Way of Northern New Jersey: United Way of Northern New Jersey is a nonprofit organization working to improve peoples lives and strengthen communities by focusing on Education, Income, and Health. These are the building blocks for a good life a quality education that leads to a stable job; the tools needed to achieve financial stability; and good health. They lead caring communities to create long-lasting changes that transform peoples lives. Together, united, they can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow throughout Morris, North Essex, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties. Give. Advocate. Volunteer. LIVE UNITED. On October 8th, a small fox kit stuck its head out of a carrier, sniffed the air and ran out into the woods on Smithfield Farms in Bernardsville. Healthy and free, the fox was in far better condition than only a couple months earlier when it was discovered malnourished and suffering from mange while on the property of Realogy Corporations headquarters in Parsippany. Realogy, a leading provider of real estate and relocation services, is known for helping people find new homes. In this case, with the help of Animal Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary in Warren County, and the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains, the fox kit

was able to begin life in a new home, far away from the hustle and bustle of Route 10 and Route 202. According to Tom Hocker, Realogys vice president of facilities, fox kits were first sighted around Realogys headquarters in late May. By mid July, one of the foxes was clearly very ill, barely able to walk. On July

27, the sickly little kit was caught in a humane trap and brought to the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains. It was severely underweight and missing a good deal of its fur due to mange, a common affliction for foxes. The vet at the Animal Clinic said that the fox could be saved with medication, and that it was otherwise in stable condition, said Kelly Simonetti of the Animal Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary. We picked up the kit to rehabilitate it in a proper environment. She responded well to the medication, accepted nutrition and recovered quickly. When the kit arrived at Antler Ridge, she weighed only 2.4 pounds when she should have been close to eight pounds. At her release, she weighed a healthy 10

pounds, according to Simonetti, who added that foxes that live in or near office parks often become stressed, and since there is no prey to hunt, they become garbage pickers. Simonetti always has been compassionate for animals and supportive of wildlife. Ten years ago, after earning a license for wildlife rehabilitation for mammals, she opened the Antler Ridge Sanctuary, which is a non-profit organization that relies on donations to operate. A venture that started very small has exploded in growth, far more than she expected. We get so many calls from local businesses, especially on Monday mornings, Simonetti said. Wildlife is attracted to the beautiful landscaping around office parks and buildings, particularly on weekends when there are few people nearby. They build a den, or have their babies, then on Monday when employees return there is no place to take shelter. Antler Ridge asked Realogy if the company wanted to name the baby fox since it had initiated the rescue, and the answer came back in one word: Hope. For more on how to support antler Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary, call (973) 800-2420 orvisit www.antler-ridge.com. A good time to visit Antler Ridge is during its Holiday Bazaar on Dec. 3rd and 4th from 11am to 4pm.
