Activity 4: Circuits Unit Project Electronic Bicycle Safety Device

The unit project for electrical engineering is the design, prototyping and testing of an electronic bicycle safety device. You need to consider the type of safety device you'd like to design and fabricate. Earlier this term, you began thinking about this device by completing the concept stage of the engineering design process by addressing the first four parts described in your text (ref: pgs. 35-38).

Project Requirements & Constraints

This is an individual project. You must create a functional prototype of an electronic bicycle safety device that addresses a real existing safety issue. The solution must be reasonable to manufacture and cost must be minimized to no more than $20 per unit. All reports must be submitted digitally via Schoology. Deliverables include: Report (see below, but also including) o circuit diagram o sketch of device (Google SketchUp), o Excel spreadsheet showing parts needed including cost estimate Fully functional prototype

Your report must document each of the following steps of the Identify problem (include statistical data) Research existing solutions to the problem Identify constraints and design criteria Explore and document possible solutions Select an approach Develop a design (include circuit diagram and digital sketch) Model or prototype the design Test and evaluate the prototype Refine as time allows Communicate results (include detailed production cost estimate in a table)
