Term/Year Instructor E-mail 2nd Trimester/ 2011 Mrs. Kremkus LKremkus@riverviewschools.com

Course Description This course is designed to be the first in the students 3 or 4 year science program. This course focuses on chemistry, physical science, space science and earth science. At the end of this course, the students will be prepared to go onto the next step in their science education. Required Texts and Instructional Materials Title Physical Science Prentice Hall Assignments Science is not a discipline that is performed in isolation. Scientific knowledge and understanding only advances after conversation and collaboration. In order to get you used to thinking and acting as scientists, this class will be group work based. See the schedule on the last page for topics covered in this trimester. The dates and weeks may change if needed. Binder Requirement Each student will be required to keep a binder for this class. The binder will have an assignment log to be filled in each day. This will be collected the day of the test for each chapter. The sections of your binder will include (and be in this order): Notes Worksheets/homework assignments Lab Activities Journal entries Handouts/Miscellaneous Evaluation: Your grade will be determined by tests, labs, cumulative quizzes, group work, class work, homework, papers, journal writing, class participation, and the final exam. Points will be given to all assignments on a weighted scale. Assignment Percent of Grade

No missing homework from before progress reports will be accepted at the end of the term. All assignments missed due to an excused absence will follow the rule in the code of conduct. If you come into class before school and need help on an assignment I will give you extra time to turn it in, so be responsible. Unexcused absence/Suspension: Any work missed because of these absences will result in a ZERO Cheating Policy: Everyone is capable of his/her own work; therefore copying homework, lab work, tests, or a quiz is not allowed. Any incident of cheating (including the use of electronic devices) will result in a zero for the first offense for all students involved. Teacher will write a pink slip for quizzes/tests. Any other offense will result with pink slips, zeros, and calls home. Notes: You are responsible for ALL notes when absent. Therefore it is your responsibility to keep your notes organized so you can do well on your tests and quizzes. Make up tests/quizzes: If absent the day of a quiz/test but knew about it in advance, you must make it up the day you return or take it early. If you did not know about it, then you have two days. Make up Work: Whenever absent, assignments can be found written on the board in class. All worksheets can be found in the weekly bin which is also in class. Allotted time for absent work is determined by the number of absences, per school policy. Study: You should study your notes at least 10-15 minutes every night in order to understand & keep material fresh in your memory Extra Credit: Extra credit will be offered at My discretion. Do not ask for bonus points or extra credit. I usually give extra credit assignments when there is adequate need for it or when a special assignment comes up. Behavior Thus far in your educational careers, most of you (if not all) have only experienced very structured classrooms with rules to cover every possible situation. However, in a matter of a couple of years, you are going to be out in the Real World. As shocking as it may seem, there are not rules for everything. High school is your final opportunity to learn how to conduct yourselves in a supportive environment. Therefore, we have only one rule in this classroom: Act like an adult This means simply, I am going to treat you like adults and, in return, I expect you to conduct yourselves like adults. Part of becoming an adult is to overcome bad habits. If I happen to notice a habit is starting to form (i.e. frequent late assignments, chronically late to class, etc.), I will speak with you first. This will be your opportunity to take responsibility and correct the problem. However, if the problem persists, I will be forced to call home. I would much rather see you handle the habit. So, please, do not put me in this situation.
