CC.11-12.R.ST.2 Key Ideas and Details: Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text; summarize complex concepts, processes, or information presented in a text by paraphrasing them in simpler but still accurate terms.

Procedures

Topic: Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago by LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman o Chapters 13-15 (pgs. 113-133) Begin class with a journal entry (15 minutes) o The prompt will already be written on the board when students enter class: What are the similarities and differences between G-Babys death in Hardball and Erics death in Our America? Think about the scenery and location. o Students will grab their journals when they come into class o Once class has started, the teacher will play a scene from the movie Hardball (2001) The scene will be when G-Baby gets shot o After the clip, the students will answer the question in their journal. o This entry not only provides writing practice, but also serves as a review for the novel (going back to when Eric dies). o Have students put journals away. The rest of class will then be spent reading chapters 13-15 in Our America (45 minutes) o Students will participate in guided reading. The teacher will begin reading chapter 13, pausing periodically to summarize. o The teacher will then ask for volunteers to read or call on students if no one volunteers. Volunteering to read will give a student 2 points of extra credit. o Every student in class will have access to a laptop, and will log on to the class blog. o While reading and following along in their books, students will comment on that days blog post. That days blog post will read: As we read more about Erics crime and the justice system, comment with your ideas or moments in the book you find interesting.

The teacher will be able to see what the students are commenting by reading the blog after class. Assign Homework for the Weekend: Write a response to the new blog post. o Blog Post for Homework: Pick one of the characters form chapters 13-15 that you found particularly interesting. Write about why you found this character interesting and how you would feel if you were in their situation.

Assesment/Evaluation:

CC. 11-12.R.I.7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas: Students will be exposed to media through the Hardball clip. They will then use their knowledge of Erics death in Our America, along with knowledge they just acquired from the clip, to answer the journal prompt. CC.11-12.R.ST.2 Key Ideas and Details: For homework, students will summarize a character from the reading. The blog post allows for simple language.
