Erin Dietel-McLaughlin Community-Based Writing and Rhetoric 06 November 2011 Visual Essay Explanation My visual essay starts out with a statistic about the number of people currently enrolled in the U.S. public school system: Currently there are about 49,136,240 students enrolled in the U.S. public school system (Table 3). I paired this statistic with a picture of a classroom full of students. Immediately following this scene I move to a picture of an empty classroom with a statistic about the violent acts in schools: Since the 1992-3 school year, 270 violent deaths have occurred at schools across the nation according to The National School Safety Center's Report on School Associated Violent Deaths. The majority of these deaths, 207, were shooting victims (School Violence). The contrast between the two photographs causes the viewer to pay more attention to what the text says. Next, I move on to pictures of children and elementary school scenes. These pictures are all bright and happy, simply typical views that might come to mind when thinking of primary schooling. Following this I have a picture of a schoolyard fight. Then I show multiple pictures of happy middle-school adolescents, followed by a picture of a more viscous fight than the last one. This scene continues to multiple pictures of guns. One shows a student putting a gun into a backpack. Another is an illustration depicting guns as students sitting in desks. These photos are shocking and should do well to prove that violence in school is an issue that needs to be addressed. To further argue this, I

Szeliga 2 show a few photos of the Columbine shootings and follow this with a You-tube video about a woman injured in the incident. My essay then reaches a point of hope. I incorporated a quote about how the number of violent incidents in school has decreased over time. To prove this I show a graph, and then show pictures of some of the different types of violence prevention programs to suggest that this decrease is because of these implementations. I then provide some counter arguments. Because of the declining economy, taxpayers are looking for any type of cut in what they have to pay the government. The violence-prevention programs may not be cut because they have had a positive effect on the rate of violence in school. Another argument against my claim could be that these anti-violence notions should originate within the home. To illustrate this argument I show a picture of a family from a long time ago in contrast with a picture of a modern family. This juxtaposition shows how time has changed and that because of our now hectic lives, the anti-violence sentiments have a better chance setting in at school than at home. I then move into my conclusion, discussing further the absolute necessity of violence-prevention programs in school. I end the essay arguing, Violence prevention campaigns are not only recommended, but also necessary in creating a non-violent and upstanding society, as well as molding the future of America as a country. This realworld application broadens my argument as well as strengthens it by adding a feeling of urgency for the country. This shows that violence in schools is an issue not just for students but also for anyone who is an American and is concerned with the future of his or her country.
