War-fled Kachin minority in northern Burma

We appeal that the:

Australian Government:

Save Lives in Northern Burma

provides vital life saving aid through local relief agencies who can access the areas unreachable by the UN and other aid organisations; increases its efforts to secure a UN mandated Commission of Inquiry into crimes against humanity and war crimes in Burma; applies all practical measures to bring about concerted pressure on the military-backed Burmese government.

On the 9th June 2011, the military conflict erupted between the Burmese army and Kachin Independence Army (KIA) in northern Burma ending a 17 year ceasefire agreement. The Burmese army has now launched full scale war including the alleged use of chemical weapons and relentlessly attacking against its unarmed non-combatant Kachin civilians.

Burmese Government:

orders its army to cease fire immediately and find a peaceful resolution; orders its army to put an end to the atrocities against the Kachin people; permits independent credible investigation of war crimes.
UN and International Community:

The Burmese militarys ethnic cleansing mentality fuels every soldier to act with brutality by arbitrary shooting, torturing, looting, destroying and torching homes, performing summary executions, attacking churches, beating church pastors and worshippers to death, and systematically raping and murdering women with impunity.

engage with the Burmese government to investigate its troops committing war crimes; press the Burmese government to allow humanitarian access to the conflict affected areas; urge China to open refugee camps in its territory; coordinate relief activities with local relief agencies working along the Burma-China border; provide humanitarian assistance and vital supplies through local relief agencies to the areas UN and other aid agencies are currently denied access.

Over 30,000 Kachin and other ethnic people have been forced to flee their homes into the BurmaChina border because of this conflict and war crimes perpetrated by the Burmese army. Local churches and local relief workers are helping these refugees. International humanitarian and aid organisations are being denied access to these areas by the Burmese and Chinese authorities. Tens of thousands of innocent young children, defenseless women and elderly are in danger of dying from hunger and treatable diseases. Many more need urgent medical attention, vital supplies and life-saving cross-border aid.
