Introduction
Nochildshouldbeexpectedtocastoffthelanguageandcultureofthehome ashecrossestheschoolthreshold,nortoliveandactasthoughschooland homerepresenttwototallyseparateanddifferentcultureswhichhavetobe keptfirmlyapart.Thecurriculumshouldreflectmanyelementsofthatpartof hislife,whichachildlivesoutsideschool. WhyhaveaLanguageoftheMonth? Therearemanyreasonswhy weshouldknowaboutoneanotherslanguages, includingthefollowing: Togivebilingualchildrentheopportunitytodemonstratethelanguageskills theybringtoschool. Toenhancethestatusofbilingualchildren. TobroadenthehorizonsofmonolingualEnglishspeakers. Toshowrespectforotherlanguagesandcultures. Togiveparentsanopportunitytobeactivelyinvolvedintheirchildrens learning. Howtousethisbooklet Justdipintothebooklet,trytheactivitiesandhighlightthoseyoulike.Mostofthe activitiesaregameswhicharebestplayedforabout10minutessothatthechildren willwanttoplaythemagainwhenlearningotherlanguages.Spread theactivitiesover themonth andadaptthemtosuityourclass.Forexample,playtwo10minutegames perweekandusestickerstorewardthechildrenforplayingthegameswell. Section2:Listeningtospeakersofthelanguage
LanguageoftheMonthprograms EachLanguageoftheMonthprogramcontainsvideoclipsshowingachildteaching wordsfromhis/herfirstlanguage.Classroomswithaninteractivewhiteboardanda fastinternetconnectionhaveeasyaccesstotheseprograms.Theprogramscanbe usedtointroducenewvocabularytoaclass,withwordsrepeatedasoftenasrequired. Theprogramscan alsobeaccessedbychildren athome.
