Within dark clouds above the earth, And dark ominous shadows on the earth, In the deepest caverns of the earth An ancient evil waits …
Chapter One
High pitched screaming caused shivers down his spine while he watched in horror. He knew one of them. One of the great stone blocks slid into place catching two slaves not fast enough to get out of the way. The blocks were placed so tightly and precisely no remains could stay between them. What was left of the hapless victims liquefied and stained the stones with mortal debris. The huge stones continued floating into place without interruption.
Even at the tender age of twelve he had seen more similar sights than he wanted to count, but this time his stomach betrayed him. His brown body trembled as he swayed on his hands and knees while a gentle breeze passing over his vantage point on the bluff ruffled his black hair. His golden eyes with their star shaped pupils telescoped the sight before him then he turned away.
His parents were among the workers bringing the blocks to the enclosure site. He quietly thanked the Most High that they were not the ones killed, not today anyway.
Workers scurried everywhere like ants. They had their homes a short distance from the work site. The smell of bread baking and fish roasting wafted in the air. The people slept in shifts with crews working until the light was gone and they could rest. The blocks were pulled on sledges to the edges of the Sphinx enclosure and Hall of Records where the giants and angels took over by floating them up into their designated places. They had to be pulled to a certain area where the magnetic lines of the earth were the strongest so the blocks could be floated.
Strange tools, given them by the dark angels that had become gods to the people, cut the stones a distance away. The tools were mysterious to the workers. Only the giants and angels understood how they were made. They were capable of polishing any surface at the same time as they cut.
As the blocks were completed they were drug by the workers to the edge of the Nile where they were put on barges and floated to the harbor nearest the construction site and handled from there by another set of workers.
The scene looked peaceful. A gentle breeze stirred the leaves and grass. There were no clouds in the brilliant blue sky. As far as the eye could see there were lush forests and vegetation of all kinds with brilliantly colored birds flitting about. It was hard to imagine such disregard for life demonstrated on such a day even by the beings who considered themselves gods.
A few miles away a city of stone covered in gold with buildings of colored crystal abounded with life, both mortal and immortal. It was as high as it was wide and could be seen for miles in the sunlight. His parents lived there long ago before the king reserved it for himself and his special minions. Only those mortals chosen to be wives to the dark angels lived there along with their strange offspring.
A twig snapped. He jumped up, startled. He was not alone.
Whew! What is that stink?
The boy’s leering face mirrored those of a group of adolescents encircling their hapless victim.
Hey maybe it’s because he’s been dead so long. Someone needs to bury him,
another said.
The gang of boys made a grab for the one named, Tomb, but being small for his age and agile he dodged through their legs and made a run for it. For a short time he heard running feet pounding behind him. He dodged around a large rock and through a bush concealing a small cave. He squeezed through the opening knowing the others were too big to follow.
Never mind. We can get him later then we’ll put him where his name says.
Snickers followed the remark.
Tomb heard them leaving over the pounding of his heart and his gasps for breath. Being twelve and looking like he was eight caused him enough trouble without his horrible name. He understood why his parents named him that, but that didn’t make it any easier. They said Michael, one of the biggest and most powerful of the angels of the Most High, told them to name him that. No one knew why.
His parents still followed the teachings of the invisible God from ancient times. Michael was one of His generals and one of the few left on the earth still faithful to the invisible God. Michael told them that others like him were in hiding or transferred to other parts of the galaxies … for now.
Tomb and his parents were part of the Remnant. Numbers of them disappeared mysteriously almost daily. Constant wars encouraged and caused by the angels and giants decimated the population. It was said they were weeding out the best warriors for a great war the king had planned.
Tomb went back to the bluff overlooking a large plateau. The river was visible in the background filled with fishing boats and barges carrying supplies to those working on the construction site surrounding the statue that commemorated one of the giant offspring of the dark angels, a leader that was half man and half beast. The scene contrasted to the swarms of sky ships darting about overhead or hovering over the construction area. They used the powerful magnetic fields of the earth so concentrated in this area to refuel.
Giant offspring of the dark angels floated the huge blocks into place.
The workers carried materials and equipment for them. For them it was an honor to do work on the Hall of Records. The rewards were great. There was plenty of food and homes for everyone as long as they honored and worshipped the gods. They had forgotten the golden age of over five hundred years ago when they worked for their own purposes and worshipped the One God who created the universe.
These eternal dark angels who followed the king only cared about getting the job done. It was rumored the king ruled a third of the angels of God and they were assigned to the earth from the beginning.
The lives of most mortals were of no interest to them. They married mortal females, having no females of their own kind, and their progeny were giants and strange looking creatures, some having bodies of horses or lions and other animals. The statue honored a renowned leader with the body of a lion. It faced the constellation he represented.
Compared to the great size of these ancient ones and their progeny the mortal slaves helping them looked like pygmies.
Tomb had heard, as had everyone else, the Hall and Sphinx enclosure had to be finished before the king returned from a neighboring planet. He was overseeing some building projects there as well.
Tomb glanced up at the brilliant blue sky. The water wall surrounding the planet acted as a huge shield and magnifying lens to the heavens. It also acted as a sound magnifier. When the noise of the workers became still one could hear the music of the heavens.
He could see one of the planets quite clearly. It looked green dotted with blue. The king himself was supervising the building operation. Being the most beautiful and powerful of all the dark angels, gems of all colors and sizes covered him from head to toe to denote his superior rank. Just looking at him dazzled the eye. The king had forbidden the worship of the invisible God and no one dared to oppose him, at least not to his face.
Tomb took a circuitous route home. He should have started earlier. It was getting dark and the shadows on the forest floor seemed to be moving even without any breeze. He passed a small pond. The moonlight reflected in it and made it sparkle with a life of its own. He thought he saw something coming to the surface and head toward him moving rapidly.
Suddenly panicked he ran the rest of the way to the edge of the Nile where his little boat was tied. He got in and paddled home as fast as he could staying close to the shore. He broke out in a sweat even though the evening was cool.
He came to the little pier in front of his house and hopped out, tying the boat quickly and entering the little mud brick house he shared with his parents. The house was back from the shoreline to allow for flooding. His parents had taken the time to plant an elaborate garden that surrounded the house. Flat pieces of limestone made a path to the front door. The soft glow of candlelight and the smell of cooking food wafted out the open windows. His parents were already home.
He sheepishly entered the house knowing they must have been worrying about him.
His mother wrapped her arms around him with tears flowing down her cheeks. What happened? Did those horrible boys hurt you again?
His father just sat at the stone table in the middle of the room with his head in his hands. He did that often. Tomb suspected it was because he felt so helpless. He knew that feeling.
I got away from them without getting hurt this time. Don’t worry. I can take care of myself. I can run faster than they can.
Stay home tomorrow and study your lessons. Don’t go out anywhere.
His father looked up at him. We have to go to work. I wish your mother could stay here with you, but you know that is impossible.
His mother dried her eyes with the edge of her kimono. Be careful no-one sees you studying or reading anything. You know how dangerous that is.
I know that.
He patted her hand awkwardly. Why is it so dangerous? I never have understood that. Why don’t the giants and the gods want us to read?
His father drummed his calloused hands on the table. They are not gods. They are the evil angels of the wicked one. They want us kept in ignorance. They know that those of us who were here in the golden age know how to read. If they knew we taught you, we would all be killed.
His mother got up and put the bowls of garlic-flavored leeks with fish and fruit on the table. They all sat on the mud brick benches and began to eat. Tomb absently pushed a piece of fish around his plate.
Why do they want us to be stupid, Dad?
It is easier to control people who are ignorant. You must study hard. Don’t let them win, but never even give a hint that you understand what you see them write on the stones or anything else. We live outside the settlement of the other pyramid builders to keep us from influencing any of the workers. That has been to our benefit. Since we live here away from the settlement, it is much harder for them to spy on us. But don’t forget to go down stairs to the deepest part of the cellar and take plenty of candles to study so no-one sees you even if they send spies.
Tomb nodded his understanding. He looked at them both. His mother was still beautiful with her long flowing golden hair and green eyes. Her hands were slender and delicate in spite of the hard work she did all day cooking for the workers at the little self contained village they called the settlement. It was conveniently near the construction site to make it easier to go to work. They worked in shifts, cutting, polishing and dragging the heavy stones to the edge of the site.
He knew they were both very old. They had been here in the golden age that was almost a thousand years ago. His father was beginning to show his age. He just had a few streaks of gray in his raven black hair. His skin was as dark as his mother’s was fair. He now had deep furrows in his brow and his dark eyes seemed to always be sad. He had older brothers and sisters that had long since gone on to have children and grandchildren of their own. They cut themselves off from their parents for what they termed their parent’s dangerous and rebellious ways.
Tell me again what it was like in the golden age, Dad, when Lucifer still worshipped the Most High and made beautiful music.
His father smiled as he remembered. Even his practical mother seemed lost in thought as she listened and added a comment when needed. They spoke of cities of gold encrusted with brilliantly colored stones, beautiful clothes and plenty of food for everyone and a time when everyone worked for themselves and each other. Happy times, when no one ever died or got sick and children could play in the streets and no one would hurt them. Tomb tried to imagine such a world.
XXX
Tomb hated his name. His parents understood his aversion to his name, but they had been instructed to name him that as they had explained to him. He cleaned up the small kitchen after his parents left for work then stared at the rays of sun streaming through the windows shaping puddles of light on the mud brick table. He wanted to study there in the sun. He already had a full supply of candles and lanterns in the underground hideaway. He would stay here as long as he could.
Michael had given his parents knowledge of a new language he was to learn. He would one day write important things in that language they said.
Whoever heard of any other language than the one spoken now by everyone? All spoke the same way. It was hard to imagine such a thing, but he believed what his parents taught him. He sat at the table and studied the parchment rolls of the new language. He couldn’t imagine how the words sounded, but could write them and understand what they meant … almost.
He looked up startled when he saw a shadow and heard a giggle at the same time. The leering faces of the boys who had chased him earlier were at the window.
Hello, dead man. Isn’t it time we put you in your Tomb where you belong.
Panicked he slammed the window shutters closed, pulled open the hidden entrance to the underground hideaway, grabbed the parchment and disappeared into its depths.
He could hear them as they screamed in rage and broke down the door. He could hear things breaking as they stormed through the house. He went up a narrow stairway to a secret passage behind the wall of the house. There was a peek hole there.
It was pitch black but he knew his way by heart. The light streamed through the small hole. It remained unnoticed from the other side. It was part of a large wall fresco his talented mother had painted.
Heart pounding he watched through the hole. Maniacal laughter followed each act of destruction. He watched in horror as they destroyed his mother’s little stove and pantry and tried to knock over the table. The table was not so easy to demolish. Beneath the mud brick it was solid marble. His father had fashioned it using special techniques he remembered from the golden age. It was built right into the floor that was also made of marble and limestone under the hardened mud brick. They hacked at the shutters until all that was left was splinters. He had no doubt they would have done the same to him if they knew where he was.
It was hot and stifling in the narrow passageway behind the wall. He was about to turn away and go back down to the hideaway when something happened that almost shocked him into a faint.
Those boys were changing shape. There were five of them and they were all changing into different shapes. They seemed to fade in and out of that shape. They were roaring and screaming and shouting curses. One looked like a huge spider with evil yellow eyes all over his body, another looked like a flying reptile with a tongue that darted in and out of his mouth. The others looked like misshapen animals. They were creatures he had never seen before and never wanted to see again.
His stomach was about to betray him. He looked once more. They were all normal again. Dazed he darted back down the dark stairway.
Come on. We will find him. He can’t have gone far. At least now we know where he lives.
They all snarled their agreement and filed back out stepping over the broken door.
Tomb sat shivering in the elaborate underground house that was a replica of the home his parents once had in the golden age. He felt sick. What would his parents say? What would happen to them now and to him?
XXX
The world where Tomb lived was the favorite of the king. The angels calling themselves gods who followed him ruled other worlds in this solar system and the rest of the galaxy. Other beings ruled worlds so far away no one could see them even with a tube full of lenses to magnify further than the water wall allowed them to see.
Rumor had it the king had amassed a great army of slaves and others like himself from other worlds. He would use everyone on earth as well. A fleet of space vehicles floated just above the busy plateau and river. The angels did not need vehicles to get where they wanted to go. They traveled at the speed of a thought. Space vehicles were mainly for the benefit of their mortal slaves. Sometimes robots that were half machine and also flesh piloted them. They could endure forever and they required no food or water. They were built exclusively for space travel and for piloting the ships.
All Tomb’s family lived in the underground house now. His parents had stored up food enough to last several years. His father barely made it to the hideaway alive and his mother had been ill ever since one of the giants kicked her in the stomach. Michael caused those chasing them to be temporarily blinded so they could escape.
It was hard to imagine the world his parents told him about. They were very old and remembered when the whole world was full of beauty and peace.
The king ruled then as a prince and high priest of the invisible God and he was merciful and just. Tomb’s father told him how the prince once filled the earth with beautiful music of praise to the Most High. Why had he changed?
He snuck out while his parents were sleeping and wound his way to the plateau taking a short cut through the caves only he knew about.
Excitement filled the air. Crowds of people swarmed over the plateau. The huge statue, Hall of Records and enclosure stood gleaming in the sun, finished in record time. The king stood on a platform in front of them towering over everyone. It was impossible to look anywhere else. The azure eyes of the king seemed to be able look into the eyes of everyone, ancient ones and mortal alike. He was about to make an announcement.
His voice boomed to the uttermost reaches of the crowd on the plateau even to Tomb at the back of the crowd. The Hall of Records and enclosure serve several purposes. First it is a generator of great energy. They are also fueling stages for our ships. Most important it is to be a time marker for the date I will rule the whole universe …
The crowd was silent. The planet you see in the sky is to be called Mars … and this world shall no longer be called Earth. It shall henceforth be named … Atlantis.
The crowd roared. Hail King Lucifer, ruler of Atlantis.
XXX
Passing centuries echoed the words of that announcement. The statue cast an elongated shadow extending to the Hall of Records and the enclosure around it on the plateau. The sun flashed off the gold and polished stones before the shadow reached it.
Tomb stood on the bluff overlooking the lush savannah for the last time. He was the last of the Remnant. Michael told him he would know his true purpose soon. A room in the Hall of Records was almost ready for him.
The destruction was about to begin. It was retaliation against King Lucifer. His army had tried to overthrow the Creator. He intended to make himself
