Francines Friends coach makes cancer
screenings convenient
Mobile mammography unit is now in its sixth year
15 minutes could save your life! Thats the
message that Francines Friends Mobile
Mammography coach brings to the community,
when it sets up a mobile screening unit in front
of area businesses, shopping centers and
schools. The coach sets up at a new location
each time, to offer area women screening
mammograms that are convenient.
A mammogram is a detailed X-ray that is
used as a screening tool to detect breast cancer.
The digital technology used by Francines
Friends keeps radiation exposure to a
minimum, while obtaining high-quality images
of the breast tissue, the organizations website
said. The purpose of the program is to promote
early detection of breast cancer by making
screening accessible to all women, no matter
where they are or if they can afford it.
Conducted by Francines Friends, it is a part-
nership with Parkview Health and the Breast
Diagnostic Center.
The idea is for women to feel comfortable,
Debi Kennedy, community outreach coordi-
nator said. With cherry colored flooring, a burgundy sofa and comfortable changing
rooms, the coach is decorated with stylish
comfort in mind. The bus is also heated and
travels year-round.
Kennedy said the setup allows patients to
have the utmost privacy. When women walk
through the coachs door, they will be checked
in and then sent back to one of two dressing

Lorelei VerLee is the
visionary behind Creative
Women of the World, an
organization that helps
women who seek to rise
out of extreme poverty,
through creativity and
business solutions. Her
interest in global culture
was fostered when she
was growing up. Her
parents were missionaries
and she lived in Tokyo
until high school.
Ive always had a
global view, she said. I
wanted to do mission
work. I studied art in
America and I taught art
in public schools.
VerLee started her own
greeting card business in
the late 80s.
It was all done with
artisans here in Fort
Wayne, she said. Our
goal at that time was to
provide jobs for women
who wanted to stay home
with their children.
The company dissolved
after being sold, but this
did not stop VerLee.
I was always sad about
that. In the meantime, I

Local pastor looks
to retirement
For more than three
decades at St. Michael
Lutheran Church, Pastor
Robert Bruckner has been a
staple in the lives of church
members.
Many of them have
opened cards on their birth-
days with hand-written well
wishes and blessings inside
from Pastor Bob. They may
recall sermons in which the
pastor would take a serious
topic and make them smile
or they may chuckle remem-
bering how he could find a way to work the Cleveland
Indians or Browns into a sermon. An eternal optimist, he
never waned as a fan, even when the teams weren't
playing well.
But these memories are just part of a much larger
picture of the man that has touched the lives of so many
in his 33 years at the church.
In that time, Bruckner has baptized 619 children and 82
adults, confirmed 488 students and wed almost 400

NIPSCO gifts $11K
to local food bank
A local gas and electric company presented a $11,000
check to Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast
Indiana two weeks ago.
NIPSCO raised the funds during its holiday giving
campaign, an initiative that reached across its entire
northern Indiana service territory. The company collected
a total of $16,000 in monetary donations that will be
distributed between three northeast Indiana food banks.
The check will be put toward the CHFBs Community
Cupboard program, where clients of member agencies
can shop for food and household items for free.
The campaign also collected eight barrels of food items
to benefit the regions food pantries, and more than 250
toys that will be gifted to the Toys for Tots program.
We are seeing record numbers so far during this
holiday season and we are so grateful for the support
NIPSCO and its employees have shown, Jane Avery,
CHFB executive director, said in a release.
Through their donations to our Community Cupboard,
they are making a significant difference in the lives of
their neighbors. The check was presented to CHFB
representatives at the Community Cupboard, located at
999 E. Tillman Road.

different countries doing
mission [work], she said.
An email from HAPI,
Haitian Artisans for
Peace, arrived in 2007
that changed her career
plans.
I got an email saying
they were looking for a
designer-type that could
help a greeting card
company in Haiti,
VerLee said. My heart
just jumped. I knew this
was it.
She then spent a month
with artisan women in
Haiti. I found that it was
way more primitive than I
could have ever imag-
ined. VerLee said most of
the villagers had not gone
to school and at the most
had only gone through
third grade. Most could
not read, she said.
She began to give them
drawing lessons and soon
found that the artisans
were fantastic embroi-
derers.
It was all hand-done,
not done on a machine,
she said.
VerLee worked as
Product Designer and
Marketing Director of
HAPI for four years
before starting Creative
Women of the World
(CWoW).
It has been so
exciting, she said.
CwoW aims to help
these artisans come out of
extreme poverty, by using
creativity and selling
handmade cards and other
wares. Products are sold
at the store on DiSalle
Boulevard and represent
countries like Haiti, Tajik-
istan, India, Kenya,
Mexico and Turkey.
The organization also
cares about the working
conditions the products
they sell were manufac-
tured in.
Our goal is not only
just to buy the products,
VerLee said, adding that
they like to put a face to
the person who made the
products and know, what
their stories are. Its a
story that goes back
many, many generations.
We are all affected by the
culture in which we were
raised. As we get to know
a little more about the
artisan and her culture,
then we feel more
connected.
One of the organiza-
tions CWoW works with
is Radiant Hope, which is
based in Turkey and is a
safe house for women
who have been rescued
from sex slavery, VerLee
said. An item on the
product line is a necklace
with 27 tear-shaped
Italian glass beads.
It represents the 27
million women and chil-
dren who are now
enslaved, she said. We
are the key to help them

After reducing his hours and responsi-
bilities at the church two years ago,
members recently learned in a letter from
Bruckner that he would fully retire.
"I would describe him as very loving,
caring man of God who has been an
encourager of people in their faith and
supported them in their problems in trou-
bled times and someone who is loved by
the entire congregation," said Harry
Jones, a close friend and member of St.
Michael since 1985. "Now, people realize
he is going to be completely stepping
back from leading."
Bruckner came to St. Michael in April
1978 and was the pastor for many years,
then senior pastor as the staff grew, Jones
said. Bruckner has been pastor emeritus
for the past two to three years.
Despite his retirement, Bruckner will
continue to be a part of the church
community, worshiping at St. Michael,
participating in the disabilities ministry
and visiting nursing homes on Saturday
mornings.
Bruckner's wife, Manna, also recently
retired from the Lutheran Health Network
where she was a nurse for many years.
Now, the two plan to spend time traveling
and being with their children and grand-
children.
An avid runner for many years,
Bruckner has no plans on stopping during
retirement.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, and Sunday,
Dec. 18, St. Michael will give everyone a
chance to offer their well wishes during
special coffee hours after church service.
"There is a sense of loss and he will be
missed," Jones said of his friend. "But, he
is still a member of church and will be
worshiping there, and will continue to be
a friend to everybody."

Military members win contest for trip home
The names of three local military service members who
won a contest to fly Home for the Holidays were
announced Wednesday by the Fort Wayne International
Airport. Army Private E2 Gregory Bolden, Robert
Hardesty, E5 of the United States Army and Navy Petty
Officer 2nd Class Matthew Art will fly home from their
current stations to be with their families for the holidays.
Bolden is currently stationed in Fort Lewis, Wash. Art is
stationed in Yokosuka, Japan on the USS McCampell. For
this military member, a visit home means he will not only
meet his 6-week-old daughter for the very first time, but
will also marry her mother. The contest was also spon-
sored by the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce
and WAJI Majic 95.1.

Hollywood comes to
Huntington University this
January with the filming
of Praying the Hours.
Praying the Hours
tells the story of a man in
the midst of his death who
is reflecting on eternity.
The film is told in eight
segments, which will also
be displayed as individual
short films, and is based
on the ancient practice of
fixed-hour prayer
observed by the Abra-
hamic faith traditions.
The final segment of
this independent film will
be shot on campus over J-
term with the assistance of
digital media arts students.
If we build it, they will
come, and independent
filmmakers in Hollywood
are coming, said Dr.
Lance Clark, professor of
digital media arts film and
communication.
Renovations to the
digital media arts depart-
ment through Together:
The Campaign for Hunt-
ington University and the
recent purchase of a state-
of-the-art RED Scarlet-X
camera has made the
program more vibrant and
attractive to outside film
agencies. Clark hopes this
is the first of many proj-
ects to come to
Huntington.
Im very excited about
this, he said.
The final segment of the
film, The Hour of
Compline, will be shot at
various locations in and
around the campus with
the assistance of 10 hand-
selected students. It tells
the story of a college
professor and is set at a
liberal arts college in the
Midwest.
As an artist in residence
at Fuller Seminary in
Pasadena, Calif., director
Lauralee Farrer was
attracted to the idea of
shooting at a Christian
college - even more so
when HU alumnus Matt
Webb pitched the idea.
We feel that this is a
terrific fit - not just for our
production but also to
have a chance to create a
little community with
Huntington U., Farrer
said.
HU students will be
used during preparation
and production of the film
including camera opera-
tion, location scouting and
problem solving such as
the development of trick
shots.
There are a number of
different areas that the
students are going to be
involved with, said Webb,
a producer on the film and
a 1998 theater graduate
from HU. Were excited
about it. Were excited to
work with Lance and the
students. I think it will be
good for the school and
great for us.
Praying the Hours
will continue shooting the
other seven segments at
various locations in the
country through 2012 with
a hopeful release date in
2013.
Learn more about the
film at www.prayingthe-
hours.com.

rooms to undress. They will then go straight into the
screening room, which features a digital mammography
unit by the name of Lorad Selenia. This back room
features the machine, as well as a work station area.
Jan Miller, who works in the screening room, has
worked on the coach full-time for about a year, she said.
Working in the environment has made a difference on the
way she views the program.
She said her favorite part about being on the coach is,
the fact we go someplace different everyday. The fact
that we help women who cant afford a mammogram.
Before working on the coach, Miller worked for the
Breast Diagnostic Center, which is another partner of the
program. She said the experience for a visitor is pretty
straight forward.
They would come in, register and change into a
gown, she said. Its not as painful as women think.
Miller said it takes about five to seven minutes for the
procedure and the results are sent to the customers
homes in a week or less.
Since the coach is a screening facility, if any diagnostic
or follow-up testing has to be done, customers will be
sent to the Breast Diagnostic Center.
All films taken on the coach are reviewed by a radiolo-
gist off-site and not at the time of service.
Board-certified, breast-imaging radiologists from
FWRadiology interpret the exams.
We walk a woman through the whole path. We dont
let her struggle, Kennedy said.
She said while there are other mobile health
networks out there, Francines Friends Mobile
Mammography is the only one that has this grassroots
funding.
The organization, Francines Friends, was named after
Francine Schubert, who lost her battle with breast cancer
in September 2002.
After our friend, Francine Schubert, lost her battle
with breast cancer, several of us met to discover a way to
honor Francines spirit and drive. The decision was made
to provide an opportunity for every area woman to
receive mammography services, reducing breast cancer
deaths through early detection. Our goal to establish a
mobile mammography unit to serve every woman in
Allen county and the surrounding area who might other-
wise not receive a screening mammogram and follow-up
care was reached late in 2005 when Francines Friends

mobile mammography was launched, the
Francines Friends website said.
Women are eligible for a mammogram
on the coach if they are age 35 and older
and have not had a screening mammo-
gram in the past 12 months, if they have
no prior or current history of breast
cancer and if they are insured or unin-
sured. The American Cancer Society
recommends that annual screening begins
at the age of 40.
Kennedy said the convenience factor of
Francines Friends can be a major draw.
She gave the example of having the coach
outside of South Wayne Elementary
School.
Theres no real disruption, she said,
adding that teachers at the school could
come out and get a mammogram and not
have to worry about taking up too much
time, since the procedure is right there.
She also said that money might be an
issue for women who dont have regular
mammograms.
While screening mammograms may be
a benefit under insurance carriers, for
women without insurance or with high
deductibles, the coach might be the best
option.
The Breast Diagnostic Center (BDC)
performs the screening. For women who
have insurance, they will bill the insur-
ance company. If the patient does not
have insurance but has the ability to pay,
the BDC offers a reduced rate if paid the
day of the screening. For women without
insurance, a high deductible, or resources
to pay, funding is available, the website
said.
Financial assistance programs are avail-
able, through Francines Friends and
Parkview Hospital Foundations Commu-
nity Health Improvement Program, which
can cover the cost entirely.
The program is always looking for
sponsors, to help with fuel costs, mainte-
nance and diagnostic services. There are
also two annual fundraisers, which help
bring in money to keep the coach rolling.
Appointments for mammograms can be
made by phone, by calling 260-483-1847
or 1-800-727-8439, ext. 26540. Walk-ins
are still accepted, however, now that we
are in our sixth year, we encourage them
[visitors] to make appointments,
Kennedy said, adding that this could
reduce wait times.
For more details or to see where the
coach is going to be, visit www.Face-
book.com/FrancinesFriends or
www.francinesfriends.org. The coach
follows the same closure schedule as Fort
Wayne Community Schools. If schools
are closed, then the coach does not go out
to the scheduled location.

How to give without giving
The financial stress of the holidays
can be caused by more than
affording presents for family and
friends. It is a time of year when
reaching out to those less fortunate
seems all the more important, but
there are often choices to make in
order to do so, from cutting back on
gift giving, to donating much less, or
not at all.
In fact, nearly seven in 10 Ameri-
cans said in a recent report by
Campbell Rinker that they will
give more sparingly to charities
in the coming months.
But new ways to give without
giving could be the solution to
stretching that holiday dollar. The
way in which we donate to chari-
table organizations is changing in
such a way that the average
consumer may not have to choose
between a gift or donation.
It is all done in a network of
good, so to speak, through Good-
Dining, GoodSearch and GoodShop.
The funding effort allows consumers
to donate to local charities without
even realizing it, whether they are
out for a meal, searching the Web, or
shopping online.
San Fransisco-based GoodSearch,
a Yahoo-powered search engine and
GoodShop, an online shopping and
coupon portal, launched almost
seven years ago. Within that time,
GoodSearch has donated more than
$8 million to user-designated chari-
ties and schools.

Sporting equipment store encourages
customers to play it again
If the Play It Again Sports store sign on
Coldwater Road looks familiar, thats
because it is. There was another store that
existed in the area from 1987-1998.
Ashok Dyal-Chand, owner of the new
store, said the old store was one of the
first stores in the entire chain. Its been a
13 year absence and we certainly needed
that representation.
Dyal-Chand did not own the old store,
but his background in retail, sales and
management inspired him to open a
NEW location last month. An interest in
sports also piqued his interest.
Fort Wayne and [the] surrounding area
is pretty big into sports, he said. Youth
through adult. He plays tennis and foot-
ball recreationally.
The premise of Play It Again Sports is
simple. It buys and sells sporting equip-
ment, new and used.
Dyal-Chand said about 60 percent is
new and 40 percent of the stores stock is
used merchandise.
The store carries a wide array of
sporting products.
The only thing we do not sell is
anything that shoots any archery or
firearms, paintball, no air soft just for
liability, he said. We do not sell any
field and stream stuff hunting, fishing
or camping, and no bowling.
He said everything else is pretty much
up for grabs, including snow, field,
court, water sports, fitness, cardio
machines, mobile fitness and
freeweights.
Dyal-Chand said one of the stores
biggest segment is on ice hockey.
The Play It Again Sports store are all
across the country, he said.
Were the fourth largest sporting
goods retailer in the company. Were the
only ones that sell used as well as new.

Selling sporting equip-
ment is simple as well.
When customers bring
in merchandise that they
need or dont want
anymore, we pay them
cash or check on the
spot, Dyal-Chand said.
What somebody doesnt
need, somebody else
will.
He said trades can also
be made for products.
The nice thing about
this [is] you can create
your own discount if you
find something in the
store, he said.
But the sporting equip-
ment to be sold has to be
in gently used condi-
tion.
Dyal-Chand said age
and condition, scratches
and blemishes are big
factors for how much
money a customer will get
for selling a product.
I dont buy anything
for the store that I
wouldnt consider for
myself, he said. We
dont want anything thats
damaged [or] broken.
He encourages
customers to check out
their products and see if
they have anything they
would like to try to sell.
We all have something
in our basements or
closets or attics that we
dont need anymore. Its
nice especially for
parents, when youre
outfitting your kids for
sports. it certainly adds up
when you have to buy
them new merchandise.
Play It Again Sports
also has a local sister
brand, Dyal-Chand said.
Platos Closet is owned by
the same company. He
said both of the stores
benefit customers.
People have an alterna-
tive to paying the big box
retailer, he said.
Play It Again is located
at 4430-C Coldwater
Road and regular store

p.m., Monday through

New diabetes education program
arrives at Parkview Huntington
The American Association of Diabetes
Educators has named Parkview Huntington
Hospitals diabetes education program an
accredited program. According to a press
statement, Diabetes education is a collab-
orative process through which people with
or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge
and skills needed to modify behavior and
successfully self-manage the disease and
its related conditions. It is provided by
diabetes educators. This also means that
residents in and around Huntington County
will now have increased access to diabetes
education services.
Leslie E. Kolb, RN and Diabetes Educa-
tion Accreditation Program Director said
educational efforts are changing.
Trends show that diabetes education is
moving out of the hospital and into the
community, so AADEs accreditation
program was created, in part, to encourage
diabetes education where the patient is
seeking care, she said.
Parkview Huntington Hospitals
diabetic education program is exactly the
type of program we envisioned when we
set up our accreditation program in 2009.
For information about Parkview Hunt-
ington Hospitals diabetes education
program, call (260) 355-3212.

What Does Investment Landscape
Look Like in 2012?
As an investor, you know that
2011 was a somewhat choppy
year, with the financial markets
going through many ups and
downs. So what can you expect
in 2012?
As baseball Hall of Famer
Yogi Berra is quoted as saying:
Its hard to make predictions
especially about the future.
And these words are certainly
applicable for anyone who
would like an accurate forecast
of the investment climate.
Yet we do know of some
factors that may affect your
portfolio in the months ahead.
Here are a few of them:
Strong business fundamen-
tals This past year, all the
noise about the debt ceiling
debate, the size of the U.S.
deficit and the European
financial situation tended to
drown out some fairly good
news: U.S. businesses balance
sheets were strong for the most
part, borrowing costs remained
low, and corporate profits were
good and corporate profit-
ability remains a key driver of
stock prices. Heading into 2012,
these fundamentals continue to
look positive, which may bode
well for investors.
Europes debt crisis
Greeces economic problems
made a lot of news in 2011, but
they werent the end of the story
in Europe, as major financial
difficulties also face Italy, Spain,
Portugal and Ireland. Its by no
means clear how these problems
will be resolved, so dont be
surprised to see them lead to
intermittent, if short-lived,
shocks to the markets.
Election-year patterns As
youre well aware, were voting
for president in 2012. But you
might be surprised to learn that
the S&P 500 index has shown
negative returns in only three of
the last 21 presidential election
years. Coincidence? No one can
say for sure and at this point,
no one can say if this pattern of
positive returns will continue
during this election year. Still,
its an interesting phenomenon.
So there you have it: the
good, the bad and the quirky.
Take them all together, and you
still may not be able to foresee
what will happen with the
markets this year, but youll
have a lot to think about. But
instead of trying to predict what
will happen in 2012, you may
be better off following these
tried-and-true investment
strategies:
Diversify your holdings. By
spreading your money among a
wide range of investments, you
can reduce the effects of
volatility on your portfolio. Keep
in mind, though, that diversifi-
cation, by itself, cant guarantee
profits or protect against loss.
Dont ignore your risk
tolerance. If you worry exces-
sively about market fluctuations,
you may have too much risk in
your portfolio, which means you
may need to make some
changes.
Always look at the big
picture. Financial markets will
always fluctuate. But if you can
keep your focus on your
long-term objectives, and make
decisions accordingly, you can
avoid overreacting to short-term
events.
Like other years, 2012 will
bring with it periods of both
turbulence and smooth sailing.
But by making the right
investment moves, you can still
chart a course that can allow
you to move ever closer to your
future goals.

Clinic urges child flu vaccines now before holidays
Because flu season peaks in
January and February, Super Shot is
asking parents to vaccinate their
children now before the holidays.
In the U.S, 5 to 20 percent of the
population will contract the flu.
Over 200,000 people will be hospi-
talized from flu complications, and
approximately 36,000 will die.
Children are at particular risk
because of their developing immune
systems.
Anyone who lives with or cares
for young children, including
siblings and daycare providers,
should get vaccinated against flu.
Children under 6 months old are too
young to be vaccinated; the best
way to protect them is for house-
hold members and caregivers to
receive the vaccination, according
to the release.
Super Shot offers the injectable
flu vaccine and Mist; injection is
suitable for children ages 6 months
through 18 years; Mist is recom-
mended for healthy children ages
two to 18.
Parents are required to bring their
childs shot record and a Medicaid
card, if applicable.

How it works
Before shopping online, the consumer
visits www.GoodShop.com. Once there,
they can choose from a list of local or
national charities of which to donate. This
task must only be completed once; all
future shopping will automatically desig-
nate donations to that charity on the
consumers behalf.
After the user has chosen a favorite
charity and registered the credit or debit
card that will be used at checkout, they
simply click through to their favorite store
and shop, with a percentage of what they
spend going toward the cause.
Remember: There is no additional fee
added to donate to the cause. A
percentage of the purchase price is
donated to the charity by the participating
retailer.
There are a growing number of local
organizations currently utilizing the
service to raise funds, including the Fort
Wayne Ballet, the Croninger Elementary
School PTA and the American Red Cross
of Northeast Indiana, just to name a few.
Further enticing consumers to use the
website are the more than 100,000
coupons GoodShop offers for shoppers to
score the best deals. Coupons can be
accessed from the GoodShop.com home
page.
The same theory applies to Good-
Search, but instead of designating a
percentage of dollars spent, about a penny
per Yahoo!-powered search via Good-
Search.com is donated to the users
favorite charity. It may not seem like
much, but consider this: Yahoo! powers
9.4 billion Web searches per month,
according to the December 2009 esti-
mates from comScore. Thats $94 million
in potential donations per month and well,
thats not too shabby.
What about donating to a good cause
simply by treating holiday out-of-towners
to a delicious meal? GoodDining.com
works with more than 10,000 restaurants
across the country, including local
eateries right here in the Fort. With
every meal, up to 6 percent of the bill is
donated to the diners favorite charity. To
get on board with this fundraising effort,
diners should visit GoodDining.com
before eating out, choose a favorite
charity and register the credit or debit
card that will be used to pay the meal bill
in order to donate a percentage of it to
charity.
In Fort Wayne, participating restaurants
include Takaoka of Japan, 305 E. Supe-
rior Street; The Gas House, 305 E.
Superior Street; Sushiya-US, 2882 E.
Dupont Road; Chappells Coral Grill,
6328 W. Jefferson Blvd.; and Chops Steak
& Seafood, 6421 W. Jefferson Blvd.
But what about those persons who
simply cannot spend a dime this season
on anything, whether it be gifts, dining or
donating? This next option may be of
interest: Get rid of old gadgets and
gizmos by sending them to Gazelle for
Good, which generates money from
unwanted electronics and donates it to
charity.
To do it, users visit Gazelle.com to
create a personalized gadget drive Web
page. Potential gadget donors can send
their used electronics to the users
gadget drive via Gazelle for Good. The
cash generated is distributed directly to
the users charity by Gazelle for Good, or
can be sent to the gadget drive user so
they can personally deliver the cash dona-
tion to their charity of choice.
It is not only a way to give back
without spending any money, but a good
excuse to clear out space for the
impending barrage of presents.
But no matter which charitable tool is
used to give without giving this season,
there is one thing that really cant be
denied.
Its all good.
For a complete list of Fort Wayne
organizations that are raising funds
through GoodShop, GoodSearch or
GoodDining, visit www.GoodShop.com,

about. That and their deli-

Situated between U.S. 24

Cottage Kitchen & Caf is a
cozy spot and tucked in
between the hills and the
trees of Roanokes north
side. Located in the same
place as the old Paragraph

little caf is all windows
across the front with a view
of beautiful, mature trees
and a winter wonderland
when it snows.
Run by mother/daughter
team Cheryl Gates

(mother), they are enjoying
their new relationship and
both sing each others
praises with regard to their

described as just a mom

because she had to feed her

her daughter Cheryl has the
talent in the kitchen and
takes the food to the next

said.

Gates and Rupert got
their start at the Roanoke
Farmers Market by selling
homemade biscuits and
gravy which sold out every
week but planted the seed
of an idea for their own
business. They now supply
a location to go with their
still popular biscuits and
gravy and they have added
quiches, breakfast
casseroles, and baked goods
- with the cinnamon rolls
selling out early. They are
also open for lunch with
daily soup specials, sand-
wiches, and salads. And
they caution that you must
save room for dessert
because they have daily
cupcake specials.
They always offer their
most popular hot fudge
sundae cupcakes and lemon
bars all the time and the
cupcake flavors most
requested include (but are
not limited to): mocha, thin
mint cookie crunch, lemon
drop, raspberry lemon and
Boston Crme.
The Cottage Kitchen and

new Event Center on U.S.

the building will seat up to

there are many opportuni-

Canterbury students learn
to see water differently
LINK day program revealed how wastewater is treated
Water is one of those things Americans
take for granted. It is always safe and
easily available. I recently spent the day
with about 50 Canterbury Middle School
students and revealed how water reaches
their tap and how wastewater is treated.
The students were participating in Canter-
burys Learning Involves New Knowledge
(LINK) Day program and were able to
trace this process, from the beginning, at
Aqua Indianas well field on Turf Lane.
There, students learned the water that
gushed from their shower that morning
originated 300 feet beneath where they
stood. Nature blessed Allen County with
ground water naturally filtered by soil,
sand and rock, leaving it safe from
surface pollutants, pesticides and insecti-
cides. At Aquas treatment plant, students
saw how we take the work of nature a
step further by filtering out iron, calcium,
and manganese. Now softened, chlorine is
added to ground water to eliminate
bacteria as its pumped through 150+
miles of pipe buried a minimum of 4-feet
protect it from freezing. Canterburys
educational partnership with the Little
River Wetlands Project had already shown
these students how reeds and other
aquatic plants can filter contaminates
from surface water. Aquas wastewater
treatment facilities use a multi-step
process to convert sewage back to clean
water. There were a few gasps and sneers
when I invited students to taste the water
at the end of Aquas sewage treatment
process, flowing into a creek that widens
through Eagle Marsh. This treated waste-
water is actually safe to drink and cleaner
than the creek water itself.
Water and sewage facilities in America
are held to some of the worlds highest
standards. Compare that to the African
nation of Tanzania where a national goal
was established in 2002 to make safe
water available within a half-mile walk
for 80 percent of the population. It is
likely that water wont be as clean as
Aquas wastewater discharge the students
were unwilling to taste. Hundreds of
American cities are facing extremely
expensive upgrades in the years ahead to
comply with federal water and wastewater
standards. As adults, these students may
grumble one day at the cost of clean
water. However, I hope theyll recall our
LINK Day experience and the process for
making a resource available that the world
envies.
