A registered nurse volunteer demonstrates proficiency in the care of patients,
and their families or significant others by applying and documenting the nursing process; assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation, as well as to assist patients in their activities of daily living under the direct supervision of a staff registered nurse. Consults with staff, physicians and management on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. Continues to learn new skills and maintains clinical competency within the department to provide direct and safe patient care.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the direct management of the staff registered nurses, a registered nurse volunteer can perform tasks such as:
- Assists in admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
- Assists in providing patient comfort and safety. - Provides personal care to patients, as bed bath, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linens, and other general care as necessary. - May perform routine procedures as enemas, douches, application of appliances for heat and cold treatments, dressing changes and catheter care at level of training. - May assist physicians in simple procedures such as dressing changes, pelvic exams, suture removal, and removal of drains, etc. - Obtains and records patient vital signs, height, weights, and I&O measurements, and reports changes/variances. - Assists in maintaining proper oxygen flow on patients. - May administer medications, start intravenous infusions or give intravenous medications. - Follows universal precautions and infection control policies. - Assists in maintenance of clean and safe environment. - Maintains confidentiality of patient information. - Maintains good interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, hospital staff and physicians. - Follow back safety precautions for lifting and moving patients. - Attends departmental and hospital meetings. - Maintains a positive attitude toward coworkers, patients and visitors. QUALIFICATIONS: A registered nurse volunteer must be a:
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing, baccalaureate
degree preferred. - Passed the Nursing Licensure Examination - Able to have good communication skills - Possess strong written and verbal skills - Attend to work-related seminars
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
A registered nurse volunteer should be caring, sympathetic, responsible, and
detail oriented. They must be able to follow orders properly from their superiors, correctly assess patients’ conditions, and determine when consultation is required. They need emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses.
