CATALOGUE OF GREEK COINS. SICILY. ‘EDITED BY REGINALD STUART POOLE. SYRACUSE, BY BARCLAY V. HEAD. THE OTHER CITIES OF SICILY, BY PERCY GARDNER, MA, SICULO-PUNIC CLASS AND LIPARA, BY THE EDITOR. LONDON : PRINTED BY ORDER OF THE TRUSTEES. 1876, PREFACE. In the following Catalogue, the coins of each city have been classified under the Periods to which they have appeared to belong, from various indications afforded by a comparison of their style of art with that of other Sicilian coins of which the dates have been ascertained. Tt has, however, been thought unadvisable to farnish precise dates for the commencement and the termination of the several Periods, which have been accordingly specified in general terms as (i) Of Archaic Art. ii.) Of Transition. iii.) Of Finest Art. (iv.) Of Decline; early. (v.) Of Decline; late. (vi.) Of Roman Dominion. Under each city, except Syracuse, the coins of the three metals aro separately described; in many instances it has been, therefore, necessary to repeat the chronological arrangement. The coins of Syracuse, on account of the extent and importance of the series, have been classified in a manner somewhat more elaborate than that which has been thought best in the case of the other cities. The order adopted by Mr. B. V. Head, in his “Chronological Sequence of the Coins of Syracuse,” London, 80, 1874, has been here selected as being that which is now generally accepted by Numismatists, and references to Mr. Head’s plates representing the Museum examples have been added to the de- scriptions of all such types as are not engraved in tho present work, vi PREFACE. Throughout the Syracusan Series the division into Periods as specified above has been retained, while at the same time a more precise method of classification according to dates has been found practicable ; so that, in the case of Syracuse, the several Periods are made to coincide with the following dates :— (i.) Period of Archaic Art, from the latter part of 6th cent.—p.c. 479. (ii.) Period of Transition, from p.c. 479—412. (iii.) Period of Finest Art, from p.c. 412—845. (iv.) Period of Decline; early, from p.c. 345—275. (v.) Period of Decline ; late, from p.c, 275—212. (vi.) Period of Roman Dominion, from p.c. 212. These dates may doubtless be taken as indicating in a general manner the duration of the Periods of Art throughout the Island, with the single exception of that of the Roman Dominion, which over the greater part of Sicily began at an earlier date than at Syracuse. For the attributions of several coins, among which may be mentioned those of Piacus, Mytistratus, &e., I am indebted to Dr. Imhoof-Blumer, of Winterthur, Switzerland. In the Siculo-Punie class only such coins have been included as bear either the names or the typos of Sicilian cities, the remainder being too closely connected with the purely Carthaginian series to be separated from it with advantage. In like manner the coins of the islands, those of Lipara and Sardinia excepted, have been relegated to the Punic Sories. In the case of Lipara it has beon considered inexpedient to follow the same system of classification as has been adopted in Sicily, the coins of that island not affording sufficient indications of the epochs at which they were issued; they have, therefore, been simply divided into classes according to the types which they bear, PREFACE. vii the sequence of these classes being generally, though probably not in every case, chronological. ‘The metal of each coin and its size is stated in inches and tenths. The weight is given in English grains of all gold and silver coins, and of all copper coins bearing marks of value. Tables for con- verting grains into grammes, and inches into millimetres as well as into the measures of Mionnet’s Seale, aro placed at the end of the volume (pp. 290-292). REGINALD STUART POOLE.
