The Most Dangerous reason as to why a person goes astray is Ghuloo (Excessiveness).
Allaah has warned about this in numerous verses in the Quraan.

Ghuloo means exceeding the boundaries and regulations Allaah has ordered by adding
extra to them. Allaah has prohibited this type of oppression.

u (#ts? sus /3n=t <x
And commit not transgression or oppression therein, lest My anger should
justly descend on you.
[Soorah Taa Haa (20): 81]

Allaah (I) also says:

r't =tG69$# (#=s? 6
O people of the Book! Do not exceed the limits in your religion.
[Sooratun-Nisaa (4): 171]

In other words, do not transgress beyond the limits Allaah has prescribed for you.

The people of the Book here are the Jews and Christians. Allaah has prohibited them as
well as the Muslims from being excessive in the religion.

Allaah (I) says:

)tG$$s !$yx. |N& tu z>$s? y7yt u (#ts? 4 ) $y/ =ys? t/
So stand you firm and straight (on Islaam) as you are commanded and those
(your companions) who turn in repentance with you and transgress not
(Allaahs Legal Limits). Verily, He is the All Seer of what you do.
[Soorah Hood (11): 112]

Excessiveness is widespread among the Christians. They display it towards Eesaa (u).
They have changed his status of prophethood to the point that they have taken him as a
God other than Allaah. They worship him as Allaah is worshipped. Further evidence in
their exceeding the bounds of worship are those who claim that Eesaa (u) was upon what
they are upon. They falsely claim for themselves infallibility. Now as for the Jews, then they
are the opposite concerning the affair of Eesaa (u). They have diminished his status to
that of a prostitutes son.

Collected in Tayseer Azeez al-Hameed (pg. 265).
Ibn Taymiyyah (V) said: Whosoever from this Ummah resembles the Jews and Christians
in transgression or laxity in the religion in the same exact pattern has indeed resembled
them (Jews and Christians). Like the Khawaarij who pass through Islaam, they revolted
against the Caliphate of Alee ibn Abee Taalib (t). At the time they rebelled against the
Muslims, Alee fought them. Fighting them has been ordered by the Prophet (r) as
mentioned in the books of Saheeh and Musaneed. Also the Raafidhah, Qadariyyah, Jahmiyyah,
and Mutazilah display excessiveness in the religion.

Ibn Taymiyyah also said: If a Muslim during the time of the Prophet (r) passed swiftly
though Islaam with phenomenal worship, then know that the person who associates with
the Quraan and Sunnah in our era also passes swiftly through the religion. This is due to
many reasons. From among the reasons is transgression that has been dispraised in the
Quraan:

r't =tG69$# (#=s? 6
O people of the Book! Do not exceed the limits in your religion.
[Sooratun-Nisaa (4): 171]

This speech is clear proof that one of the great trials that man has been tested with is being
excessive in the religion. The warning from it has been mentioned in numerous verses in
the Quraan and Hadeeth as previously stated in the aforementioned verses.

Regarding the Hadeeth, we find those mentioned in Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and other books.

Umar ibn al-Khattaab (t) narrated that the Prophet (r) said:

, ,`, `, _ .' . ,~ ' `,`,=` . , ``` ' , , ,', `` ,
` ',` _
Do not lavishly extol me like the Christians do towards Eesaa ibn Maryam.
I am a servant. So say, Allaahs servant and Messenger.

Ibn Abbaas narrated the Prophet (r) said:

, , `, , ' , ` `,` ' , , ' ` ` : ` . `, ' ` ', `,` '
Beware of excessiveness. Indeed those before you were destroyed by it.

Recorded in Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (no. 3445).
3
Recorded in Ibn Maajah (no. 3029) and graded Saheeh by Shaykh Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee (V).
These are clear texts. They show the reason for turning away from the correct Aqeedah and
sound Fitrah was because of excessiveness and overstepping the bounds that have been
established to the extent of directing worship to things other than Allaah.
