The role of the Human Resource function is changing at a fast pace in the
modern business environment. We live in the era where nothing is constant except
change. ndustries also have no exception from this. Due to this, rapid change is
happening in the industrial sector, there is a growing demand for well learned and well
qualified, knowledgeable people for various level. The changes lead to a wide spread
need for highly systematic training, the relationship between the training function and
other management activity is also changing. The training and development activities are
now equally important with that of other HR functions. Training helps to improve
performance of the individuals as well as industries, this leads to the organization
attaining its goals more efficiently. Training and Development (T&D) can be the most
important HRM function to treat people well and increase the competitive power for the
organizations (Simon, 2010).
Definition and Controversy
Training and Development is widely known by several names, including
employee development, human resource development, and learning and development .
The terms "Training and Development was even debated in the review of professional
standards in 1999 and 2000 by the Chartered nstitute of Personnel and Development
(CPD) : "Employee Developmet was seen as if to evoke a master- slave relationship
while "Human Resources Developmet was objected by academics due to the labeling
of people as "resources which can be taken as a demeaning connotation to an
individual. The CPD has agreed on the term " Learning Development, although the
term is still known by several names, most common and recognizable still is "Training
and Development (Harrison, 2005).
What is training with regards to human resources? Training can be defined as
the planned effort to facilitate the learning or enhancement of the skills, capabilities,
knowledge and behavior of employees for doing a particular job. The training process
moulds the thinking of employees and leads to quality performance of employees. t is
continuous and never ending in nature.
Training is necessary for organizational development and success. Employers
and employees of an organization require necessary training. Training takes place after
orientation of new hires. Training is usually given to new employees to indoctrinate them
with the organization's mission, vision, rules and regulations and of course the working

conditions. When new employees come on board, "it is vital that they get a good start in
their new position. They need to understand their role in the organization as a whole,
learn the expectations of their superiors and practice as the base elements of the job
(Simon, 2010). Existing employees are constantly trained to refresh and enhance their
knowledge. Changes such as introduction of new technology, new equipment, new
techniques warrant training. Training is also given to prepare employees in more
responsibilities that come from promotion and career growth.

ConcIusion
There is an ancient Chinese proverb that goes:
"He who does not know and does not know that he does not know, is a fool. Shun him.
He who does not know and knows that he does not know, is a child. Teach him.
He who knows and does not know that he knows, is asleep. Wake him.
But he who knows and knows that he knows is wise. Follow him".

or something more modern.

"Fame is empowering. My mistake was that I thought I would instinctively know how to
handle it. But there's no manual, no training course - Charlie Sheen.
Training is an important part of any organization. Training should always be done
to remain or to go beyond the current level of performance. We must understand the
importance of training because Training will bring us to the constantly moving point
where we need to be to stay competitive in the business environment.
