Gilded Age Newspaper Project In this project you will form a group of reporters and create a paper covering

the events and issues of the Gilded Age (Chapters 6-9) that we have been studying in class. In all, your group will have 12 articles, so divide them accordingly. You will also need at least three advertisements for new products, activities that are available in this era. You will need articles that cover all of the following issues: Chapter 6: Pick one event, person, movement, invention, or issue from each of the three sections (3 total). Suggestions: Profile of an industrialist New Invention New process (Bessemer, horizontal or vertical integration) Railroads (scandals, time zones) Labor Unions (report on a strike, an organizer) Chapter 7: Pick three of the following Ellis Island Angel Island Restrictions on Immigrants Origins of Immigrants Chinese Exclusion Act Americanization Urban Problems of Immigrants Reforms (Jane Addams, Social Gospel, Settlement Houses) Political Machines (scandals, Civil Service_) Chapter 8 Pick three of the following: Progressive Presidents New Technology in the Cities New Technologies Changes in Education Discrimination (voting, Jim Crow, Plessy v. Ferguson, Western discrimination) Leisure Activities

Chapter 9: Pick Three of the following Progressive presidents Womens Movement Reform movements

Once you have assigned the articles to the members of your group, we will have most of the week in the library to work on these newspapers. You will be expected to do outside research (beyond the textbook) and write your article in an interesting manner. All articles must be about 350-450 words, and should have at least one picture. Advertisements need to be creative. Once the articles have been written, they need to be arranged as a newspaper in Microsoft Publisher and uploaded to Moodle. Everyone should be able to read the other groups papers in Moodle. I want you to read at least three articles that are different from your own (in your paper) and write letters to the editor regarding each one. These letters will be posted in a discussion forum on Moodle and students can respond to the posts of other students. Over the next week, I want you to respond to at least five posts from other students. Here is the timeline: 1. Meet as a group and assign articles. (Friday, September 30) Make sure you cover every chapter with at least three articles Make someone a leader to keep after students who do not submit their articles 2. Take all of the articles and post them as a newspaper in Microsoft Publisher. (Friday, October 7) 3. Upload the completed newspaper to Moodle. (Friday, October 7) 4. Read at least three articles from other group newspapers. (By Monday, October 10) 5. Write a letter to the editor based on the article, and post it in the discussion forum. (3 letters total) (By Monday, October 10) 6. Read the letters posted by other students and comment on at least five. (By Friday, October 14) This project will be graded in parts, by the attached rubric.
