2011 Census tables. Notes and highlights Ranking is based on Urban Agglomeration (UA) population Chennai has managed to retain the 4th place at all India level by a very thin margin of less than 2 lakhs over Bangalore. Tiruppur continues to grow in a frenetic pace and now occupies 5th spot and close to the million mark. Coimbatore has had a robust growth (almost 50%) and soon we can see a Kovai - Tiruppur metropolitan area. Trichy managed to cross the million mark and retain fourth place. Salem missed both the magic million figure and 5th place. Erode has climbed above Tirunelveli with a little bit of reconfiguration of UA from 2001 census (Bhavani areas has been added to Erode UA while the Namakkal district places of Erode UA in 2001 census have been listed under Komarapalayam UA. For practical purposes, Erode and Komarapalayam should be considered as single UA or as twin cities. Rankings however dont change. Vellore too to an extent suffers like Erode as Ranipet UA has been counted as a separate UA. However, there is still a lack of contiguity between the two cities which may be bridged by next census. HEADQUARTER of TamilNadu. It is located in the centre part of TN. Based on the population TRICHY had been pushed to the fourth spot and overshadowed by Madurai and Coimbatore. When TRICHY is compared to Madurai(Big Village), the city TRICHY has the upperhand in all the aspects. And TRICHY has equivalent historical background to Madurai. When compared with Coimbatore(Manchester), TRICHY giving more Industrial output than the Kovai. TRICHY BHEL alone contributing 6000cr. 70% of the needs for Pressure Vessels, Boilers, Windmill Towers used in INDIA has been met by industries located in TRICHY. TRICHY has the TECHNO PARK through which the city is contributing for the IT. The city cost of living is low and where you can find peace to live. TRICHY has more no of International flights and Cargo Services in TN next to Chennai. This is the city where government has introduced AIRBUS and AC Buses for the city service. By Road,Rail,Air TRICHY is well connected and stands high compared to Madurai and Kovai. Here you can find the fine mixed blend of Industry and agriStill Trichy has the hidden potential to grow. Yes, like this i can list u more TRICHY ROCKS!!!!

In all the aspects TRICHY stands higher than all of the Tamilnadu Tier-II cities. If you compare Salem with TRICHY by means of Multiplex screens, you should have one thing on mind - Trichy is the first city in Tamilnadu to have a five theater complex(MARIS Complex). When compared with the Industrial output, Trichy is giving even higher than Coimbatore(10000Cr). BHEL alone contributes 6000Cr. Salem could never be compared with TRICHY at any cost. TRICHY is the only city having International Airport as well Cargo Services next to Chennai. Passport Office,Planetorium,Arivalayam(DMK) are some to mention which are located in Trichy excluding Chennai.Trichy has more no of Central Government Firms like OFT,HAPP,High Energy Batteries,SR GoldenRock WorkShop viz Trichy has major Private employers like Ceethar,Rane,Irizar TVS,Anand Engg,Cauvery Engg, etc., The 70% of the boilers used in Thermal powerplants are manufactured by BHEL TRICHY and 80% of Windmill Towers are being produced from the industries in Trichy.Trichy is the mixed blend of city and agri where people can live peacefully. By the population,Industrial output,no of educational institutes TRICHY stands higher than Salem. Even if you compare the city area, TRICHY is bigger than Salem. Now only Salem have got a Railway Div. But TRICHY had got it lots of years back. TNSTC-TRICHY is having more no of fleets on different routes in suburban and city areas which shows its vast city area. Buses like Low Floor Deluxe Buses(For ordinary Fare), A/C coaches, Vestibule Buses marches the Rock City and even introduced first next to Chennai. The details provided above is just what existing in the ROCKFORT CITY.In near future The Rock City will be the Commercial center of Tamilnadu. The TRICHY City is ranked at No.4 after Chennai,Coimbatore,Madurai.is just based on the population and hence overshadowed. Still the city has the potential to grow in all the areasIs it unawareness of the people who are having the thought to compare Salem with Trichy?
4. Arul Says:

Both Trichy and Salem are growing well in its own field. Like Trichy, Salem is not an important historical place of past history nor a place of tourism. It is true that Salem is lagging behind Trichy in educational institution and it is because of government. And Trichy is well connected with air internationally, whereas Salem is trying hard to resume the domestic operations. Southern railways gives much importance to Trichy because of the history behind the South Indian Railway company. Salem was shown step mother treatment, and just it is seeing few developments for past 1year whereas Trichy is seeing it for past 60-70years. But in industrialization, Salem took little one step forward than Trichy in many fields such as power plants, aluminum plants, chemical plants, magnetite plants, steel plants, sago industry, textile industry because of the resource available in

Salem. Apart from this, Salem was one of the important logistics hub in the state because of the location. City bus connection is far excellent in Tirchy when compared to any other city in TN, Salem was much lagging behind in this due to poor planning from TNSTC-Salem. And the vestibule buses, low floor buses are not running much in Salem. When coming to population, few claim that Salem may overtake Trichy is based on the % growth from 1991 to 2001. Salem had steep raise in population from 1991 to 2001 but Trichy had moderate one. And one more info. let me add, few statistics shows that Salem stands 3rd next to Chennai, Coimbatore economically forward in many of economic indicators like GDP, Vehicle ownership, purchasing power etc., So running the city buses, international flights are not only the indicators for a citys growth. Lot other data evaluate a citys growth.
5. Immanuel Says:
July 13th, 2009 at 11:43 am

@ARUL What other data evaluates a citys growth.????? Claims are not enough to take a firm decision!!! There is no way to take the Industrial lead of Trichy to Salem. That is confirmed through various resources. The Industrial output of TRICHY is much much more than the Salem . Trichy city was already populated.Hence now a days you can find the population growth in the outskirts of the city areas which are going to be added sooner to the corporation limit. The TRICHY - ROCK CITY expands. When you take the economic indicators like Vehicle ownership, purchasing power Valparai stands higher than Salem.Does it mean Valparai is bigger than Salem????? When you have more population in the city, you require the city buses on different routes to commute.Trichy has it. When a city economically grows, the transportation requirements goes up.Thus how ROCK CITY is well connected by road, rail and air This is where TRICHY stands Almost certainly, it is good to have comparisons b/w cities on various data.TRICHY Welcomes.. To say more, Still the ROCK CITY has more potential than Salem to grow in all the fields

who told british people to make trichy railway as head quarters during their rule? who told to build st.lourds church at st.josephs college campus? Many things can be listed like this. The reason behind this is, trichy being geographically central location, which requires badly for any administration or management and this is confirmed by some statistics which had been taken for the growth of the business in recent times. So it is very clear that nobody, even politician can prohibit the growth of trichy. When we view the recent developments, it seems that trichy will grow enormously. but still i wish all cities and villages and all tamil speaking people in tamil nadu and around the world to grow. thanks Francis Saudi Arabia

@Immanuel Here is the proof for Salem leads Trichy in Manufacturing. http://i26.tinypic.com/343m5pz.jpg In the above link, Chennai & Coimbatore is in blue color contributes more to the states Manufacturing sector. And next comes Salem, Thiruvallur and Virudhunagar districts

which are in rose colour and rest of other districts are in red colour. And this is manufacturing centers in India. http://i29.tinypic.com/2lw40mg.jpg Coimbatore, Chennai, Salem, Erode, Karur, Namakkal, Virudhunagar & Tuticorin districts are shown as the manufacturing centres in TN state. Having BHEL and power plant based machinery manufacturers alone does not make a city to be full fledged manufacturing centres. The other districts have very wide variety of field in manufacturing. So they take lead over Trichy districts. If you have more data to shows Trichys manufacturing output is more than Salem, then please come up with statistics and info. proof, I will stand corrected.

Dear Arul, The link youve given doesnt bear out evidently that the Salem leads Trichy. The maps are shaded with some specific colours to show the GDP Manufacturing Centres. U mentioned the districts like Salem, Namakkal,Karur,Virudhunagar,Tuticorin are in the rose cloured regionTrichy is too in the rose colour region along with Salem Isnt??? Then why you have left Trichy to mention there??? And Trichy is not only having the BHELTrichy is a major engineering hub and energy equipment and fabrication center of India A number of small scale industries have also sprung up in Trichy, mostly around Thuvakudi and Mathur. RockCity has two defense factories, SR Workshop(Manufactures and Exports), High Energy Battery Manufacturing Unit and more Leather tanneries are located on the way to Pudukottai. Viralimalai, considered an industrial suburb has the factories like Ceethar, Sanmar, Rane, etc.,. Trichy has numerous rice mills supplying polished rice all over Tamil Nadu Can you tell the Industrial output of Salem in numbers?
13. Vijayan Says:
September 26th, 2009 at 9:41 am

@ Immanuel, Salem Steel Plant, India Cements, TANMAG, Burn Standard & Co., Tata Refractories, Dalmia Magnesites, JSW Steel Works, Aaroghya (Hatsun Dairy), Raasi Seeds, Paraqon, Sanmar Chemicals, Mettur Thermal Power Plant, Mettur Hydro Power Plant are some major manufacturing units in and around Salem. Salem also has several silver ancillary units, textile related units (like spinning mills, clustered looms etc) in its periphery. Salem is one of the regions with rich granite base.

The above mentioned industrial units (with the exception to Salem Steel Plant, and possibly JSW Steel) may sound new to you. But the ones you had mentioned in your post sound similar unfamiliarity to me, except BHEL at Trichy. Anyways, since you have decided not to hear and understanding anything other that what you have known so far, the above few statements of mine will definitely be overlooked by you, and will not be taken by you in the right spirit.

Mr.Vijayan, U shouldnt tell what i decided and understood. Here the discussion is going on the industry growth and spread of Tamilnadu Cities Your data should speakDont try to debate by abusing anyones comment No of persons reading and commenting on this site with their viewsThis is not a quarrel between TRICHY and SALEM.Indeed, you have not taken my views and comment in right spirit. Your last two lines of comment shows that you are so biased on Salem.
15. Vijayan Says:
October 1st, 2009 at 6:17 pm

@Immanuel, The last line in your previous post replying to Arul (Can you tell the Industrial output of Salem in numbers?) shows your lack of knowledge about the industrial strength of Salem. May be you did not get a chance to really study the industrial strength of Salem, as you are in a very small circle. And when I try to point that out, you think that I am biased on Salem. Yes, indeed being a native of Salem, I tend to be biased, but that does not mean that I am talking something without facts and figures. Salem, in no way is lesser than Trichy in terms of industrial output. That is clearly visible if you get a chance to visit the statistics of the Commerical Tax returns by each region in the state in the TN government website. Salem zone generates the third highest commerical tax (taxes collected from all kinds of industries) in the state next only to Chennai and Coimbatore zone. You are making a comment that my data should speak. I did give the list of major industries (just as you did) in and around Salem for your reference. I am not sure if you wanted me to provide you the balance sheet of each companies (just as you didnt) I am refering to. I am not debating, arguing or trying to abuse anyone personally. I am just trying to tell the facts.
16. Immanuel Says:
October 5th, 2009 at 10:39 am

@Vijayan In this column, i asked about the Industrial Output of SalemIt does not mean iam having lack of knowledge of Industrial strength of Salem. You never going to stop abusing.

Foremost try to understand what is Industrial outputHow many industries located in Salem & how much they paying as commercial tax are not the answers of Industrial Output Question I never tried to hide the potential of SalemWhilst the comments given by you and Arul just says Salem is doing well, never shows Salem leads Trichy And While you and arul (two links given by him to show salem leads bt never done d work)comments, never seen how trichy is doing and u veil it. Probably it could be your lack of knowledge to compare Salem with TrichyIncluding me more persons have replied for u and Arul in the same column for your comments. When you dont understand what is Industrial Output, i will never ask you for the balance sheet of each companies you refering to If u r capable to talk about the balance sheets, i hope the industries in trichy too maintaining their balance sheets and they will speak:) When you talk about the facts just stop with itNever try to hide other cities potential And your facts are not enough to show the Salem leads the ROCKCITY at all
17. Vijayan Says:
October 20th, 2009 at 10:41 am

Then why dont you give enough facts and figures that tell that Trichy leads Salem in terms of Industrial output? That way we can conclude that Salem lacks behind Trichy. What parameters and scale are you taking into consideration to say that Trichy leads Salem?
18. Immanuel Says:
October 21st, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Y should I ???? As ive never started this debate on Industrial lead, I do not require to give the stat to show TRICHY leads SalemFACT IS KNOWN BY EVERYONE. When u say, Salem leads Trichy there is no enough facts to strengthen your statements. when Arul said Salem is doing more than TRICHY, i replied him clearly in the same columnU also listed the industries in the Salem RegionOfcourse, in the recent past Salem may have seen the growth.Fine,I agree. By the same time y didnt u look into the growth of TRICHY???!Bt just started to compare. For every comparison i too answered back. U took the population and the Industry bed most seriously in this editorial column Since uve asked me, its my task to make u aware of the FACTS. Population : Still TRICHY is in the forefront. -U can refer any website reg this Industry Lead : Y salem hadnt been given with CII region HQ as just like Trichy got it Trichy region contributes 13% of the states GDPWhre as the region under which

Salem comes contributes just 7% of the states GDP. I could give the Industrial output of TRICHY in numbers bt when uve not given it for Salem it wont make much sense. I can show and list even more than this.If still u doubted on any other parameters, list it. V shall look into it

At business side both chennai & coimbatore are in same %(they r in very important market point in india so dont compare that cities) after that trichy is leading market when compare to madurai market. 1st trichy , 2nd madurai & Trippur 3rd salem & Erode 4th thudukodi dont see the Pollution for the growth of the city Imman Talks about coimbatore comparision: coimbatore have two airports in that city.. (Peelamedu & Sulur) Peelamedu - international airport

Sulur - airforce runway & passenger Details : Covai - 11,260ft - 847946 (Int.national passenger is less than trichy passenger) 2008-09 Madurai - 6790ft - 301703 Trichy - 8136ft - 435867 Salem - 6325ft top Tax payCity: (after chennai) 1. trippur 2. covai 3. erode 4. salem 5. madurai 6. trichy at the period of M.G.R as chief minister, he decided that TRICHY was the capital city of tamil nadu on 1992 but Unfortunately he passed away on 1987. very bad lucky. but trichy as many advantage for our tamil nadu.. Adv: => Center point of the state. => Large place for railway station & runway => Education => Many Govt project & plant railways : 1. chennai railway dept 2. salem railway dept (Include the coimbatore junction) 3. Madurai railway dept 4. Trichy railway dept Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai junc got A1 certification Trichy , Salem, Erode junc got A certification My lost information abt in this: Salem will lead in business than trichy bcoz, salem is nearby the place of business area of covai, trippur, erode, karur, nammakkal.and the way to chennai Trichy is now lead in education center while compare to coimbatore.. In trichy IIM is on there. is full advantage to trichy..all over tamilnadu the people to prefer their education to trichy after than chennai, covai, madurai. Erode & Trippur are the main support for the coimbatore city.. without trippur, the covai is not made this like of huge busniess center of our state. Education Means Trichy Business means salem in future madurai may be the capital of our tamil nadu

There is no point in fighting between cities in TN.Every city has its own values. Excluding Chennai , Western TN got much much more industrial development. Cities like Salem , Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore are lies in the Industrial valley chain which approximately distance of 50-60 KM . There is no way that cities like Salem or Coimbatore will less than Tiruchi or Madurai .Each stands superior in their own way. There is no need to say anyone that Coimbatore is next to Chennai in all aspects. It is the FACT. Lot of techies & industrialist are from CBE only. There is proposal to form Coimbatore - Salem Industrial Corridor to make this western TN pioneer in economy belt. Salem is emerging as leading city in all rounds of development. Past 2 decades salem is being growing leap and bounds. Salem has SAIL , Dalmia Magnesite , BurnStandard , SYSCOL , MALCO , CHEMPLAST and lot of spinning mills. Tiruchi is very good historical place which attracts more tourist , no doubt in that and also have major industries like BHEL. And also one friend here told that Trichy had more international flights then CBE or SLM . For ex) Pune does not have flights to Dubai whereas Tiruchi got it via AirIndia express.Does it mean that Tiruchy is largest than Pune ????? Airconnectivity is purely based on people needs. And also in cental TN except Tiruchi all other towns are not witnessed much growth . But if you see western TN each city CBE,SLM ,Erode,Tirupur , Namakkal all are part of industrial valley chain and well developed. It is also known fact most of the people will migrate to western TN for their job opportunities. Tirupur alone have largest migrants from other parts of TN especially from south TN. One more friend says that Tiruchi got railways division long back and premier educational institutions longs back..and so on .. . .. ITS NOT ABOUT WHEN IT WAS STARTED, BUT HOW IT IS PERFORMING !!! . Highest revenue yielding railway division is NEWLY formed Salem division in the entire Southern railway :-)

In that Trichy district falls under red and Salem district falls under rose. Rose - 6385crores - 3192crores

Red less than 3192 crores. The output is measured in terms of money here. As per the legend in that map, Salems manufacturing output is between 6385crores-3192crores and for Trichy is <3192 crores. I have given this value in terms of money, it is upto you to agree or dis-agree with the numbers. Textile sector could have contributed much to Salem, as it falls in Coimbatore-TiruppurErode-Salem textile corridor of the state. Anyway I will stop here the comparison between tier II cities of TN.

Hi, We can admit that Coimbatore tookover Madurai after 2001 but we dont feel its permanent. TN Govt was keen in developing western TN 10-15 years back-At the same time-Madurai was ignored -so CBE overtook Madurai in all the aspectsEventhough now also both Madurai & CBE corporations have equal 72 wards - so no talk of 2nd positionif so-both the cities stand 2nd. Now TN Govt is looking at industrialising the South with Madurai & Tuticorin as HubsAlready we recieved a Huge tickets of investments in & around Madurai like VIDEOCON, POLYSINDO, TEXMACO Tractors, RR Industries SEZ, GRANITE

polishing factory,AEROPARK etc and it is hoped that by this march Madurai region will attract its investments to the maximumOnce these industries get established & functional - I am sure the nearby district towns like Virudhunagar,Sivaganga,Manamadurai,Nilakottai,Usilampatti,Aruppukottai etc., will come under Madurai agglomerations as these areas will meet the high-demands of residential spaces..The scenario is the same like chennai as it got Sirperumpudur,Tiruvallur,Manali,Chengalpet,Kanchipuram under its agglomerations With lots of industries coming & all other aspects the city already has like good commerce, trade etc.. - There is more than 80% chances of Madurai reverting back to the old history of being the second largest city of TN after chennai. With its high toruism potency & huge catchment areas for foriegn nations such as Gulf etc - AAI is promoting the Madurai Airport with a massive plan which is bigger than Trichy- So, even now & in future-there is noway to Compare Madurai with Trichy..I dono how the trichy people call Madurai as Big Village as if Trichy is a cosmo/metro..

@Jegan and @Chennaispot For your kindest information Tirunelveli was made into Corporation In 1994 along with Salem. Not in 2001. The link which u show bears a grave mistake of fact which the authorities must look into and correct immediately! Well.. having said that, Tirunelveli is a very unique city in creating its own development and agglomeration pattern. As@ Mr.Kannan rightly said, to have a population of around 4,30,000(2001 census) without even a single large industry located anywhere near Tirunelveli is no joke. India Cements of Taalaiyuthu alone has been the only mentionable industrial output for Tirunelveli City. This shows that this city has a very strong Basic Resident Population. Tirunelveli has its vital twin Palayamkottai.. which is not for nothing called THE OXFORD OF SOUTH INDIA . There has always been a great awareness in this whole district about the education of the young, due to the role which palayamkottai has played in creating constructive and condusive environment for providing excellent School Education..thanks to some really admirable work of the christian missionaries who settled here long back and brought in this awareness by building so many vital educational institutions which along with many other new institutions stand tall even today in delivering this esteemed service of making the people here highly literate! Even ppl living as far as 20 to 30 kms from Tirunelveli city seldom bother about providing their child with quality School Education as there is always the saviour in Palayamkottai available to them , that too with a really effecttive bus service network available, children pour in from various parts of the district into Palayamkottai convents. Talking abt urban development.. one can see that in last ten years..there is a large no. of small scale industries from numerous automobile outlets to agricultural inputs and accessories outlets coming up all over the city in swift pace. The two Textile majors POTHYS and RMKV who rule Chennai textile market have their First ever Establishments in Tvl Town, which r even today doing a great business here too. The stretch starting from K.T.C nagar in west, unfolding into Palay Main, going through industry rich vannarappettai and the pivotal Tvl Junction and passing through the busy S.N High Road and extending till Tvl Towns outskirts in eastis a long 12km line with already a good urban agglomeration yet having a great potential for more rapid and rounded development due the excellent infrastructure available there. Now With the Govt proposed SEZs soon to come up in Nanguneri in south and the mega IT park coming up at Gangaikondan in north, with already the India Cements Shankar Nagar hub lying halfway between Tirunelveli and Gangaikondan. the City surely sees Fast and Rapid industrial progress knocking at its doors. Yet the ppl of our City shud unite and requst

Govt. to bring in more and more industries to this city. Tirunelveli already being a great cultural and historic city, with numerous historic evidences pertaining to Hindhus, Christians and Muslims alike, the ppl of this city have strong humanistic values. If the educational potential available in this city is properly tapped and channellised into transforming itself to industrial output, by induction of more industries. Tirunelveli will surely show an aggressive and an Effective Progress with its great Potential! One shud not underestimate the the youth of this city. They are a very hard working, gutsy, sensitive, active and in a way an atheletic lot.. with a will for success and an yearning for distinction in whatever field they are in. This citys youth r primarily more eagerly and passionately predisposed to Sports n Games than to any other entertainment options like Cinemas.. that explains why there r so many quality high class playgrounds found througout the city especially in Palayamkottai! and the lack of Multiplexes etc.. Palayamkottai is proposed to become the SPORTS CAPITAL of Tamil Nadu, rightly so for the undaunting passion its citizens have for sports and games. well with all these features and potential available, and with the govt. Projects ready to hit, We r very soon going to see a VERY EFFECTIVELY AND DYNAMICALLY progressing city in NELLAI! Blessings of our perennial Mother Tamirabarani shall b with us forever!!!

Do not take the population raise in a wrong way. When a city has industrial growth, people migrates and hence the population raise happens. It is not only due to the births. For eg., Madurai had crossed 5Lakhs of population in the year of 1971 itself. By that time Trichys population(around 3.71L) was more than Coimbatore. But now coimbatore leads MDU and TRY in population. In the last couple of years MDU seeing the negative growth in the population. At the same time the area, MDU corp covers is low as well.

5.Trichy 6.Tirunelveli 7.Tirupur 8.Vellore 9.Thothukkudi 10.Nagercoil where there is a very marginal difference between salem, madurai and Trichy and marginal difference between tirupur ,vellore, thothukkudi and Nagercoil and business and total growth and education wise coimbatore region is definately 2nd and far better than any other region (madurai or trichy ) because of the combined effort of coimbatore ,tirupur, erode, salem, karur, namakkal But when seen as dist wise chennai firist followed by vellore ,coimbatore and Madurai and coimbatore lost its second place because of bifirication of coimbatore dist as 2 (kovai and tirupur) and apart from anything else coimbatore railway revenue is second best in southern railway for more than cochin and tiruvndrum and Coimbatore is big not because of big industries only it is because of thousands of small industries. HI!

everybody seems to be fighting to save the identity of their city. whereas i can say being a traveler across the state for more then 15 years for my profession i would say all the cities are growing like anything. i f you compare with other states the Tier II cities are not much as Tn. we have 10 municipal Corporations which is high compare with any other state in India. Every city is unique in nature. Coimbatore is very sound in technology. Industrial people from cities like pune, Chennai, Mumbai and Noida Bangalore have high regards on Coimbatore. Salem is trading hub for basic commodities, magnesium and granite. it has Steel plant which itself a small city.Trichys major industrial output depends on BHEL.where as Madurais the /TNs Traditional HQ.TNveli is unique in nature,Ppl from TNveli has domination on the retails sector across the state.Tutukudi is fast growing Port city which is going to rule the sea.Tiruppur is self developed textile city which is now in trouble because of the /Govt ignorance. Overall i can see their is a misconception about the size of Salem.the financial strength of Salem is more then Trichy.May be Trichy is a little bigger then Salem. but Salem have certain huge treasure in black money.the spending level for secret pleasure is much more then any cities in TN. Population is not a major parameter to evaluavate citys potential. It should be based on the buying power,Industrial output,Education and lifestyle. If you take cities from U P are comparitively more then any of our cities, Whereas the quality of life there is much much below then any of our tier III cities,in sme places it is less then TIer IV citis of south India. what we could Say? Let us pride about our satae and will work for it s growth. JAI HIND.

SEPARATORS

Gravity Settling The majority of the process vessels you see in your plant are gravity , vapor - liquid separators . Their main purpose is to settle out droplets of entrained liquid from the up flowing gas . Factors that affect the settling rate of these droplets are Droplet size . Big droplets settle faster than little droplets . Contrary to that nonsense we were taught in school , cannon balls do drop faster then B B s -------- if one accounts for the resistance of air ( B B s are small spheres of lead shot used in air guns ) . Density of vapor . The less dense the vapor the faster the droplet settling rate . Density of liquid . The more dense the liquid droplets , the faster the droplet settling rate . Velocity of vapor . The slower the vertical velocity of the vapor , the faster the settling rate . Viscosity of the vapor . The lower the vapor viscosity , the faster the settling rate . Entrainment Due to Foam A light , frothy foam is naturally more susceptible to entrainment than is a clear , settled liquid . Knockout drums handling foam , therefore , should be designed for a lower K value . Perhaps the K value that can be tolerated might be reduced by 25 to 35 percent , in the anticipation of such foam . But foam may have a rather dramatic effect on entrainment , through a mechanism that is unrelated to vapor velocity . The problem I am referring to is high foam level . We already discussed this problem in Chap.7 , in the section devoted to level control . Figure 26.2 illustrates this problem . The level shown in the gauge glass is 18 in below the inlet nozzle . This is okay . But inside the drum , we have foam . The average density of the foam plus liquid in the drum might be 0.60 . The density of the clear liquid in the gauge glass is 0.80 . Referring back to the logic in Chap. 7 , the foam level in the tower is then 33 percent higher than the liquid level in the gauge glass . One this foam level rises above the feed inlet nozzle , the vapor in the feed blows the foam up the drum . A massive carryover of liquid ( or foam ) into the vapor line then results . I mentioned above that a small amount of mist carryover to a centrifugal compressor helped keep the rotor clean , and did no harm . Sudden slugs of liquid into the compressor inlet are another matter . They are likely to unbalance the rotor and cause substantial damage . If the compressor is a high - speed ( 10,000 - rpm ) , multistage machine , it is likely to be wrecked by a slug of liquid . Even a small surge of liquid entering a reciprocating compressor can be very bad . The intake valves are almost certain to be damaged . Typically , the valve plate will break . Water - Hydrocarbon Separations Figure 26.3 shows a reflux drum serving a distillation column . We have a reflux drum because The drum provides a few minutes of holdup for the overhead product and reflux . This prevents the reflux pump from losing suction, should the amount of liquid discharging from the pump briefly exceed the amount of liquid draining from the condenser .

The reflux drum separates liquid and wet gas by gravity setting . A horizontal vapor - liquid separator works in much the same way as the vertical K O drum . The horizontal usually want to separate water from the reflux stream , water . Why do we usually want to separate water from the reflux stream , shown in Fig.26.3 ? Same of the bad things that happen to the distillation tower , if water persistently entrains into the reflux are The distillation tray efficiency is reduced . The water may settle out on the hydrocarbon liquid on the tray . This reduces contact between the up flowing vapor and the down flowing , internal reflux . The tray may flood . Water and hydrocarbon mixing on the tray deck , stirred up by the flowing gas , creates on emulsion . The emulsion does not separate as readily as clear liquid from the gas . Premature down - comer backup , followed by tray deck flooding , result . Tray deck , down comer , and vessel wall corrosion is increased . Water conducts electricity a thousand times better than do liquid hydrocarbons , corrosion involves the transfer of electrons between steel and inorganic molecules , such as Hydrochloric acid to form ferric chlorides Hydrogen cyanide to from ferric cyanide Carbon dioxide to form iron carbonate Hydrogen sulfide to from iron bisulfide The water acts as a highway for the electrons ( the term electrons comes from the word electricity ) to move between these potentially corrosive molecules and the vessel wall . Water in reflux tends to get trapped in the tower , if the tower - bottom temperature is above the boiling point of water , at the tower's operating pressure . The water trickles down the tower and revaporizes off of the hot reboiler tubes . As the water may be saturated with corrosive salts and gases , reboiler tube corrosion can be rapid . In almost every petroleum refinery service , refluxing water is a quick route to reboiler tube leaks . Water setting and viscosity Water droplets settle out of a lighter liquid hydrocarbon phase because of gravity . The water is denser than the liquid hydrocarbons . Liquid droplets settle out of a lighter gas phase because of gravity . What is the difference ? The difference is viscosity . We neglected the effect on the gas viscosity when calculating the K value in K O drums . Gas viscosities are almost always very low . But liquid viscosities are extremely variable At a constant viscosity the settling rate of water in another liquid , due to gravity is proportional to ( Density of water ) - ( density of liquid the reflux drum ) For water settling out of gasoline in the reflux drum shown in Fig. 26.3 , the settling rate is between 1/2 and 1 ft / min . If a droplet of water has to fall through a layer of hydrocarbon 3 ft deep , it would take about 3 to 6 min. If the hydrocarbon is less dens and less viscous than gasoline ( like butane ) , the settling rate will be faster . If the hydrocarbon is more dense and more viscous than gasoline ( like diesel oil ) , settling time will be longer .

The most neglected , but most important , feature of the reflux drum shown in Fig.26.3 is the riser , a piece of pipe 4 to 12 in high , protruding from the bottom of the drum . You see , water settles to the bottom of the drum . The water then runs along the bottom of the drum into the water draw - off boot . Electric precipitators in mist removal Sulfuric acid production unit in Texas City , we had an electrostatic precipitator to remove a liquid sulfuric acid mist from a flowing gas stream . It worked in the same way as a precipitator in liquid - liquid service However , the electrodes or grids were not parallel plates . As illustrated in Fig.26.4 , the grids were lead tubes and lead - coated wires. The gas flowed through about four hundred 8 in lead tubes , arranged in parallel . It was rather like a single - pass , shell - and - tube heat exchanger ( see Chap.21 ) . This electric sulfuric acid - mist precipitator worked fine , until on of the lead coated wires inside the tubes broke . Then the entire precipitator would arc . This means , the amps would jump up and down , as the single broken wire flapped around inside the tube . I do not know why , but the wires failed only on weekends . Then your fearless author author would crawl inside the precipitator , and cut out the broken wire and plug the tube with a wooden plug . Static Coalescers A coalescer works in the same way as a demister , except that it is used to accelerate the removal of droplets of a heavier liquid from a flowing lighter liquid . An ordinary coalescer is shown in Fig.26.5 . This coalescer was used to remove entrained caustic from a flowing isobutane stream . The liquid isobutane would impact the coalescer pad at a velocity of 1 to 2 ft / min . The droplets of caustic , which have a higher surface tension than isobutane , would adhere to the surface of the coalescer fibers . As the caustic droplets grew bigger and heavier , they would drain down the fibers of the pad , and into the boot .

increasing Overhad Drum level for settling time may help. Additionally, decreasing Drum temp to improve phase separation between HCN and water. You should also be sure any wash water quality to MF overhead is constant, has not deteriorated, and is set at proper rate. There is a chance additional water flow may help to improve phase separation as well, although this goes against coventional thinking.
