Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set: Students will watch the short utube video clip of Pay it Forward. Following the video, we will discuss what pay it forward means and begin to brainstorm ways that we can offer to volunteer in our community to help others need it. Detailed Teaching Sequence: (Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. After brainstorming ideas for a community service project, explain the 3 components of the paper/project. Students should know that they will currently begin to contact a community program, etc. that they will base their project on. At this time, they will only set up a mentor and decide on a program. The students will then begin todays portion of this project. After discussing reasons for problems such as poverty, autism, etc., the students will complete the graphic organizer together as we go over it in class. The students must identify an essential question such as What can I do to help children who have to be in the hospital during the holidays? My example was a Presents for Patients idea Next, the students must list 3 reasons that this problem exists. They must then list 3 solutions to help with this problem. After they have completed these sections of the organizer, they need to write a thesis that will be used in a persuasive research paper that they will begin in the library tomorrow. Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities This is the beginning lesson to a community service project/paper and the students will be assessed daily, at short deadlines where they will earn points for having each step of the process completed by the end of class. Closure: At the end of the lesson, review some of the students ideas and reasons/solutions to help. Ask if anyone has any questions. Make sure that by the end of class, everyone has chosen a project and completed the organizer.
