1. A floor consists of various rows of tile. In one row there is room to place 6 tiles end to end.

(a) Suppose you may choose from 8 different tiles, each of a unique color, to place in the row. How many arrangements in the row are possible?

(b)Suppose another row of tiles can accomodate 7 tiles. for this particular row, you have 3 tiles same blue color, 2 tiles have the same yellow color, and 2 tiles have the same black color. How many unique arrangements are possible in this case?

2.After a box of electrical components is shipped it is discovered that of the 6 total components 2 are defective and the remaining 4 are acceptable. Suppose you select 2 components at random from the possible values for X.

(a) Let the random variable X represent the number of defective components selected. List the possible values for X.

(b)Create a probability distribution for X, that is, create a table that lists the values of X and the probabilities associated with each value.

3. A survey of 400 autos parked in the visitor and employee lots of a large organization classified the brands by country of origin, as seen in the table below. Driver Visitor Employee 127 75 34 67 55 42

American European Asian

Let A denote the event that the driver was a visitor and let B denote the car was European. Find the following probabilities. (a) P(B)

(B) P(A|B)

(c)Are A and B independent? Justify your answer

(d) P(A' intersect B)

4. A small regional airport is served by just two airlines: Delta and United. Given a passenger flies on Delta , the probability that he or she goes to New York is 0.4. If a passenger flies United, the probability that the flight goes to New York is 0.2. Seventy percent (70%) of all flights out of this airport are on Delta. What is the probability that the passenger flew on United given that he or she flew to New York?

5. The number of calls,X, to a corporate office follows a Poisson distribution with a mean of one call per 30 minutes.

(a) What is probability that there are two or more calls in one hour

(b)What is the probability that are no calls within two hours?

6. Suppose a probability mass function is given by f(x) = (x+1)/10 for x = 1, 2, 3

(a) Determine the cumulative distribution function F(x), for the random variable X.

(b) Determine E(X), the mean of the random variable X.

(c) Determine V(x), the variance of the random variable X.

7. Suppose that in a certain town. 75 percent of the voters favor using tax dollars to build a new park. Five voters are selected at random and questioned about the issue. Assume X denotes a binomial random variable that represents the number of voters out of 5 that favor the new park.

(a) Find the probability that exactly 2 of them favor the new park.

(b) Find the probability that one or more out of the five will favor the new park

(c) Compute the mean number out of the five favoring the new park

(d) Compute V(x)

8. Consider the continuous random variable X with probability density function (pdf)

(a) Find P(Xgreater than or equal to -0.5)

(b) Use the fact that the E(X) = -0.75 to compute the variance, V(x).

9. The continuous random variable X has probability density function (pdf)

(a) Find P(2 less than or equal to X less than or equal to 4)

(b) Define the cumulative distribution function (cdf) for X, mathematically

(c) Find the expected value of X, E(X)
