The Voorhees Sun
Four Voorhees girls will per-
form in the South Jersey Ballet
Theatres upcoming production
of The Nutcracker.
Lauren Mosley, 18, is a senior at
Eastern High School.
Dancing since she was 7,
Mosley started by following an
older cousin who danced.
She said striving to be perfect
in dance helps in other parts of
her life, to do everything to the
best of your abilities.
Mosley said most challenging
is getting it right every time.
While she will not major in
dance in college she wants to
major in biochemistry Mosley
will continue dancing in some
way.
She said the people at South
Jersey Ballet Theatre company
are very friendly and encourage
positive attitudes.
Mosley gets very nervous when
she performs, but takes deep
breaths and talks to friends to
calm down.
Eastern freshman Delaney
Booth, 14, has danced since was 3
years old.
She said she would always
dance around the house, so her
folks signed her up.
I like how I can express how I
feel through dance, Booth said.
It calms me down a lot.
When Im having a bad day
dance is what keeps me going,
she added. It showed me that I
can look at things from a different
perspective and I can continue to
try things even if I dont get them
the first time.
Getting the dance step perfect
is the most challenging part and
she loves an audience.
I feel alive, I love it, Booth
said. It makes me feel happy and
excited to be a dancer.
She said she wants to be a pro-
fessional dancer.
I would love to dance on
Broadway, Booth said.

County freeholders have select-
ed an engineering design firm to
develop plans and specifications
for improvements to Haddonfield-
Berlin Road (Route 561) in
Voorhees Township. The changes
will include improved drainage
and the resurfacing of the road-
way from Evesham Road (Route
544) to Laurel Oak Road.
Camden County Engineer
Kevin Becica said the work will
prevent flooding, make the road
smoother, and provide for easier
access. The storm drains will also
be inspected.
Voorhees Code Enforcement
Officer Joe Hale said the county
will not only pave but will look at
existing piping and infrastruc-
ture underneath and will repair
that as well.
He said the cost of the project
will not be known until the engi-
neering report is finished.
The design work on the project
will be performed by Environ-
mental Resolutions of Mt. Laurel
and should be completed within
17 weeks. Construction on the
project should begin by April.
Voorhees Township Manager
Larry Spellman thinks the proj-
ect is long overdue.
The need is urgent, he said.
The road is in desperate shape.
Its going to be tough to keep
that road viable during the course
of the winter if we have another
bad winter, Spellman added. We
have been promised that road to
be repaired for probably three
years now.
He said he was hoping the
work would have been done in
2011.
The road has reached its use-
ful life and it needs to be re-
paired, Hale said, noting pot
holes have been patched repeated-
ly and that metal plates that were
supposed to be temporary are still

Julia Eggie, 15, is also a fresh-
man at Eastern.
She danced as a child, stopped,
and came back in sixth-grade.
I love that its so relaxing,
Eggie said.
And how about dancing in
front of a crowd?
I get nervous but I love it be-
cause after they clap I love to go
back and dance again, she said.
Trying for perfection is the
toughest part of dance and Eggie
said her teachers push her to the
limit but thats OK.
Dance is hard but worthwhile
if you stick to it, she said, and it
teaches you determination and
discipline.
Eggie will continue dancing in
college but not make it her major.
Eastern junior Natalie
Boisvert, 16, has been dancing
since she was 3 years old.
She said her mother, who loves
ballet, signed her up.
She couldnt do it when she
was younger so she wanted me to
do it, Boisvert said.
She said she started off with
tap and jazz and by age 5 only
wanted to do ballet.
Also in swimming and rowing,
Boisvert said time management
is sometimes difficult.
Its hard for me to do all
three, she said.
Boisvert thinks being a dancer
requires a lot of flexibility, pa-
tience, and thick skin.
And theres nothing like per-
forming.
At first its nerve wracking but
once you get used to the crowd
and used to being out on stage it
kind of gives you a rush, she
said.
Boisvert said she wont study
dance in college, but will study
math.

there.
Hale hopes the work starts in
the spring and finishes over the
summer when there is no school
and many people are on vacation.
Spellman said some design
work being done to improve safe-
ty at the intersection of Haddon-
field-Berlin Road (Route 561) and
White Horse Road includes strip-
ing and rumble strips.
Hale said the infrastructure in
some places is as old as 50 years.
Spellman said the township
put the request to improve Had-
donfield-Berlin Road to the coun-
ty five years ago.
Now that work at Centennial
Boulevard and Cooper Road has
finished, the Haddonfield-Berlin
Road project is now top priority.
Spellman pointed out that the
work affects not just Voorhees but
also Cherry Hill and Berlin.
Repairing and reconstruction
of county roads is one of the most
important jobs of county govern-
ment, Freeholder Ian Leonard,
liaison to the Camden County De-
partment of Public Works, said.
We appreciate the patience and
understanding of motorists for
any inconvenience they may ex-
perience during the project.
Our residents depend on us to
do upkeep on the roads, some-
thing thats no easy task, especial-
ly with the tough winters weve
had the last two years, he added.
The Camden County Depart-
ment of Public Works is responsi-
ble for maintaining over 400 cen-
ter line miles of county roadway.
The Freeholder Board has allocat-
ed $10 million for county road im-
provement projects in 2011 alone.

I
ts hard to believe, but the holiday
season is nearing an end. And that
means that a lot of holiday drives
are about to wrap up, too.
Over the past several weeks, weve
had the honor of listing a great num-
ber of your efforts to help those in
need this holiday season. In our 13
South and Central Jersey publica-
tions, weve published news about ef-
forts to collect food, clothes, blankets,
toys and items for animal shelters. We
hope that your drive, so far, has been
successful.
But now the season is coming to a
close.
If you have been able to help, we
thank you. A great number of non-
profit and charitable organizations de-
pend on the kindness of the general
public during the holiday season to
make ends meet throughout the year.
Thanks to your generosity, many peo-
ple will be helped.
If you havent helped, time is run-
ning short. Lets be honest, the holiday
season is the easiest time of the year
to lend a helping hand because there
are so many groups and organizations
collecting items and donations. You
have bell ringers at numerous stores.
As we mentioned, you read about
countless opportunities in our news-
paper. It seems that just about every-
where you go, theres a way to help
someone.
You dont have to give until it hurts.
Many small donations add up quickly.
Pocket change, a spare blanket, a shirt
that youve grown weary of wearing
these are things you wont miss, but
that can truly help someone else.
So lets end this holiday season with
a bang. If everyone who reads a Sun
newspaper well into six figures
makes one small donation this holiday
season, the impact will be simply over-
whelming.
Almost over
Holidays are almost behind us, but theres still time to make a difference
Time short to help others
If everyone who reads a Sun newspa-
per will make even a small donation
this year, it will make a huge differ-
ence in many lives.

People fleeing New Jersey
for Pa. for many reasons
People from New Jersey are moving to
Philadelphia in massive numbers, a trend
noted in recent Census figures and in a
highly detailed report in the Star-Ledger.
The 2010 census said former New Jer-
seyans account for 80 percent of Pennsyl-
vanias 25,770 gain in residents from other
states that year. Pennsylvania, overall, was
the biggest destination state in the North-
east last year.

Medford Mayor Chris Myers has re-
signed. According to Township Manager
Christopher Schultz, Myers resignation
letter was delivered to the township clerk
Dec. 5 and took effect immediately.
Sometime in October, a man claiming to
be an escort posted a photo of what ap-
pears to be Myers in his underwear and
also stated he has a photo of the mayors ID
card. The photos were posted anonymous-
ly on a website that is no longer available.

World AIDS Day: A
personal price
Ill never forget the last time I saw my
uncle Patrick Slane. I had just returned
from a visit to Scranton, Pa.
He was lying on the couch, and the
moans he was emitting were chilling he
could barely breathe. After years of suffer-
ing from HIV, it was finally catching up to
him, and from all indications, the end was
near.
Days earlier, I found him aimlessly walk-
ing around the house. He was completely
demented and had no idea who he was,
who I was or where he was. When I re-
turned from Pennsylvania, things ap-
peared even worse. The television was on
loudly.
He had his favorite drink, a chocolate
milkshake, sitting on the table. But he was
struggling to take in air.
He was going to die soon.

Special to The Sun/ STEVEN VOLPE
Eastern High Schools Brett Knoblauch, left, and Steve Schneider are getting geared up for a big year.
Read about Easterns core of standout stars on page 13.
By STEVEN VOLPE
Special to The Sun
When a basketball team takes
the court, there is usually one
player who stands out. A 68
hulking power forward, a quick
and agile point guard, or a play-
er who can shoot the lights out of
the ball.
Well, the Eastern High School
boys basketball team doesnt
have just one standout player, or
even two, but they have eight.
Our core eight guys can play
with anyone, head coach Joe
Murphy said. Theyve been to-
gether for the past three years,
and play great team basketball.
Murphy is in his 15th season
coaching the Vikings.
The balance of our team is
going to get us to where we want
to be this year, he added.
So who are the elite eight?
The team is led by a strong
core of seniors: Brett Knoblauch
(point guard), Steve Schneider
(forward), Mike Wilson (shoot-
ing guard), Jared Ford (forward),
and Jordan Ifill (shooting
guard).
They are all experienced and
bring leadership to the court.
Juniors Devon Bell (forward),
and Avery Walker (forward), will
play key roles in the team's suc-
cess, as well.
The youngest of the elite
eight, sophomore Matt Klinews-
ki, is not short on stature. He
stands at 67 tall, and will be a
major presence down low.
Four out of the talented eight
players received Olympic Ameri-
can second team all conference
honors last year, and Wilson was
named a first team all confer-
ence member.
It doesnt matter who is on
the court out of the eight of us,
we just click, co-captain Schnei-
der said. We know our
strengths and play to it, and we
have great team chemistry.
And even with such a strong
group of athletes, the Vikings
are not resting on their laurels.
They came up a bit short last
season, losing to Oakcrest in just
the second round of the playoffs.
That loss has stuck with the
players throughout the offsea-
son.
Weve been working each
other hard at practice, and we
know it will pay off in the end,
co-captain Knoblauch, who aver-
aged eight points per game and
seven assists last year, said. If
we encourage hard work and
good teamwork on and off the
court, we will be very successful
this season.
It wont be easy, though.
The team plays in the super
competitive Olympic Confer-
ence, and will have to battle the
likes of Bishop Eustace, Lenape,
Camden Catholic and Cherokee
all perennial powerhouses in
South Jersey hoops.
There is really no night off
playing the schedule we do,
coach Murphy said. Its physi-
cally demanding, and can be
mentally exhausting at times.
The team that wins it all is
the one who can withstand the
hardships of a long and endur-
ing season, he added.
The Vikings season kicks off
Friday, Dec. 16, at home against
Camden High School. The team
has high expectations for them-
selves and they feel confident en-
tering the season.
We should be the favorite in
the conference and a big com-
petitor in the Group 4 playoffs,
Murphy said. Its their year, but
anything can happen, and thats
the beauty of high school basket-
ball.

Voorhees Townships popula-
tion of approximately 31,000 resi-
dents increases on a daily basis
when commuters and shoppers
visit our community every day.
We will continue to try to convert
those commuters into Voorhees
residents.
The Township Committee
voted in 2009 to participate in the
state sponsored Live Where You
Work Program, which offers fi-
nancial incentives to workers
who buy homes in the municipal-
ities where they work.
Over 40 other communities, in-
cluding Cherry Hill and Eve-
sham, have also joined the pro-
gram. Live Where You Work of-
fers low-interest mortgage rates,
flexible loan application reviews
and help with down payments
and closing costs to qualified buy-
ers.
In order to qualify, a person
must be a first-time homebuyer
who works but does not presently
live in Voorhees. Income guide-
lines posted by the New Jersey
Housing and Mortgage Financing
Agency (HMFA), which adminis-
ters the program, suggest that a
household of one or two people
can earn no more than $70,560 a
year if the family wants to quali-
fy.
Households of three of more
can earn no more than $81,144 an-
nually.
Incentives include down-pay-
ment and closing-cost assistance
equal to as much as 5 percent of
the total mortgage amount.
Voorhees is promoting the pro-
gram through our township web-
site, www.voorheesnj.com, printed
literature, outreach to major em-
ployers, and the local media.
In addition information can be
obtained at the state website
www.livewhereyouwork.nj.gov or
you can call 1-800-NJHOUSE
The program should help oth-
ers learn what our residents al-
ready know, that Voorhees is in
the center of everythingand

There are so many things
about the Christmas season that
can leave us feeling stressed out
and out of sorts, especially in this
present economy. If you want to
change your focus this year, and
bring the true meaning of Christ-
mas into clearer view, check out
some of the activities going on at
HOPE Church, located at 700
Cooper Road in Voorhees.
Go to ChristmasIsHope.com to
see a complete list of our events.
December can be a very hectic
time of year; concerts, office par-
ties, tree lightings, special church
events. Most of these activities
are good and enjoyable but some-
times all that busyness can get in
the way of experiencing the full
joy of the season. Make room for
Wednesdays, Dec. 14 and 21 from 7
p.m. to 8 p.m. for a time of wor-
ship and reflection on the King-
dom of God. These Advent reflec-
tions will begin with 15 or 20 min-
utes of worship followed by small
group discussions of that weeks
theme regarding the Kingdom of
God. Nursery is available. Our
family ministry will offer pro-
grams for children from three to
5th grade during that time as
well. Advance reservation is
needed. Please contact Chris
Graves at 856-751- HOPE (4673) or
Chris@MeetHope.org.
Our very popular Family
Christmas Candlelight Services
will be held Friday, Dec. 23, at 7
p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 24 at 4
p.m. Come experience a heavenly
Christmas where the story of the
birth of Christ is told from the
perspective of the angels. Nurs-
ery is available for children 3 and
under.
Candlelight services will be
held at 7 p.m. and again at 9 p.m.,
on Saturday, Dec. 24, with child
care offered at the 7 p.m. service
only. For further information,

Lori Ann Laquitara, 46, of
Voorhees, was indicted by a
grand jury on manslaughter and
endangering the welfare of a
child in connection with the
death of Stephen Torrey, an 11-
month-old boy she was babysit-
ting, according to prosecutors.
Torrey was in Laquitaras care at
the defendants home from 2 p.m.
July 10, 2010 until police were
called the next morning. A med-
ical examiner determined the
baby suffered a three-and-a-half-
inch fracture to the rear of his
head. Camden County Prosecutor
Warren Faulk reported Laquitara
was indicted by the grand jury on
Nov. 30 and the proceedings were
made public Dec. 7.
