A hammer should not be use to strike a hardened tool or any machine part. Use a soft faced hammer 15. Practice cleanliness and orderliness in laboratory and workshop area. 16. Keep the floor around machines clean, dry and free from hazards. Do not allow chips to accumulate. 17. Think through the entire job before starting. Before starting a machine, always check it for correct setup and always check to see if machine is clear by operating it manually, if possible. 18. Do not bring food/snack and drink into the workshop. Under University policy, smoking is not permitted in any building. Respect the laboratory/workshop and other users. 19. Do not drink alcohol before or during work in the machine shop area. No one are allowed to enter laboratory and workshop if they affected by drug. 20. Dont rush or take chances. Obey all safety rules. 21. If you have not worked with a particular material before, check the hazardous materials data sheets book for any specific precautions to be taken while working with the material. Also, ask the shop personnel before cutting any unusual material. 22. Heavy sanding and painting should only be done in well ventilated areas. 23. It is impossible to maintain a safe work environment if tools, stock and last week are lying about the equipment. Return any tools to original place after used. 28. Practice common sense. If your gut tells you not to setup a part in a certain way in the machine, dont do it. Most shop accident is a result of lack knowledge, not carelessness. If you have any doubt, consult the professional machinist. 29. Measuring tools should be kept in good working order. They should be stored in a clean space, away from chips and oil of the cutting environment. Measuring tools should have their zero checked prior to each use. If you do not know how to zero a micrometer or dial caliper, ask your shop supervisor 30. Students may not bring personal equipment into laboratory/workshop outside calculator in required and the like without the express permission of the lab supervisor ( The lab staff, Academics or the school will not take responsibility for the lost of your effect) Accidents in the shop happen very quickly and most always there isnt warning before a problem occurs. The shop guidelines listed above, if put into use, will allow one to work safely and independently in a small machine shop. Remember, above all else it is important to work safely.

Make sure the chuck, drive plate, or, face plate, is securely tighten onto the lathe spindle. When removing the chuck, drive plate, or, faceplate do not use machine power. When installing the chuck, drive plate, or, faceplate do not use machine power. Move the tool bit a safe distance from the collect or chuck when inserting or removing work. Dont run the machine faster than the proper cutting tool. In setting up tool holder place it to left side of compound slide to prevent the compound slide from running into the chuck or spindle attachments. Always clamp the toolbit is sharp and has the proper clearance. Ask for assistance making adjustment. Always make sure that the toolbit is sharp and has the proper clearance. Ask for assistance making adjustments. If any filing is done on work revolving in the lathe, file left handed to prevent slipping into the chuck. Never use file without a handle. If work is turn between centers, make sure that proper adjustment is made between centers and that the tailstock is lock in place. If work is being turned between centers and expends due to heat generated from cutting, readjust centers to avoid excessive friction. Do not grasp or touch chips or turning with finger, but get rid of them using a blunt instrument. It is safer to turn off the lathe before clearing chips then to leave it running. Set the toolbit on center line of work to prevent work from climbing over tool or cutting above center and dragging. Dont cut work completely through when turning between centers Remove chuck key from chuck immediately after using. Turn chuck or faceplate through by hand before turning on the power to be sure there is no binding or clearance problem. Stop the machine before taking measurements. Before cleaning the lathe remove tools from tool post and tailstock.
