Spouts of Iman Parent Handbook

Philosophy Statement
During the early years, children develop interests, construct their own identities and understandings of the world around them and develop a sense of belonging. All children are naturally strong, capable learners worthy of our trust and support. We look to each child to help guide us in their learning. By providing a respectful and caring relationship with children and their families, we are able to work together on our goal to construct the curriculum and learning experiences relevant to children. We hope to achieve this goal by providing: An emergent CURRICULUM , that is, emerging from what is relevant to the child while emphasis on the capabilities of the child, A safe and supportive ENVIRONMENT where our children can learn and grow and that fosters empowering a child to feel confident in his/her capabilities that exists within them, GUIDANCE to assist the child to develop the essential social emotional skills that are necessary to form the foundation on which all learning is built and serve as their foundation for academic success in the later elementary school years.

We strive to provide a centre that is culturally appropriate. We make ourselves aware of the social and cultural contexts in which our children live and connect learning experiences that are meaningful, relevant, and respectful for the participating children and their families. This is especially important as our families come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. We hope to provide the foundation for the respect of self, of others, of learning, and of the environment that Allah (SWT) has created by encouraging our students to live in harmony with their Islamic beliefs in a non-Muslim society. We pray sincerely that Allah (SWT) will reward our efforts and our intentions.

Program Curriculum
At Sprouts of Iman Preschool, children gain all the skills needed for Kindergarten Readiness. The program will explore areas of the curriculum (math, art, literacy, social studies, dramatic play, gross/fine motor skills, Islamic Studies) based on the children's interests. The time period is based on how long the interest can be cultivated, so a certain topic could last one week or the whole year. As an example; the children demonstrate an interest in trucks, cars, and transportation, so we explore the subject over a month or two. We draw pictures of transportation methods (art, fine motor skills) and talk about how we and our families get around, how one child's father works at the airport, and where food really comes from and how it gets to us (social studies). We read books about trucks and transit (literacy) and built trains and buses out of blocks (gross motor, problem-solving). The kids bring a bunch of chairs together and pretended to fly to Makkah for Hajj on their 'plane' (dramatic play, Islamic Studies), and we even get a chance to sit down in a large group, sing a few rhymes about the subject and do a sink and float science experiment, etc,. We have discussions about transportation in other parts of the world and how the children come to school and the Masjid. An entire 5|Page

month or more may seem like a long time for children to explore a subject intently, but the children become so engaged the entire time that they learn an amazing amount and this knowledge that stays with them. That's the wonder of an emergent curriculum. Sample Schedule (this schedule is always flexible to meet the needs of the children, occurring not to a specific time but as the childrens interest dictate): Arrival- settling in to the centre Group time (welcoming children, discussion, introduce activities & ideas to children, literature, Islamic studies, etc.) Free play at curriculum centers, small group activities (science, literature, art project, etc.) Snack time Outdoor/gross motor skills/ nature study/gardening Small and/or large Group time Goodbyes Dismissal

Guidance
Guidance issues will be handled by observing and accommodating if necessary and by helping children communicate their needs. Teachers will always be clear about behavioral rules and expectations. Positive social skills are emphasized in our programs; some of the ways a teacher may guide a childs behavior could include: 1. Establishing clear, consistent & simple limits, & offering straightforward explanations for limits 2. Providing choices 3. Reinforcing appropriate behavior, with both words and gestures 4. Ignoring minor incidents 5. Providing reminders to clarify and reinforce limits 6. Redirecting the child to another activity 7. Modeling problem-solving skills 8. Using natural and logical consequences 9. Limiting the use of equipment 10. Removing the child from the situation 11. Providing opportunities for children to make amends

6|Page

Teachers will never yell, swear, call names or physically punish a child, or withhold basic rights as a consequence. Negative guidance such as withholding food/snack, isolation without a teacher present or belittling will not be tolerated by staff, volunteers or visitors to the centre. Positive guidance is supported by the educators by showing children how to be gentle with one another by using appropriate touch and sometimes by providing or suggesting another toy or activity if necessary. When a childs behavior requires guidance, the staff will use positive redirection, or give them an explanation of their inappropriate acts. As age appropriate, children in all programs are empowered by educators to use their language skills to manage their own problems.

Relationship with Parents

The relationship between child and parent is the primary and most important care giving relationship in the young childs life. We encourage parents to be involved and to know what is happening with our program. Parents are invited to participate in all aspects of programming and curriculum activities. We invite ongoing parent input through daily communication with staff, participation on field trips and attendance at all centers functions that are held at various points throughout the year

Communication
Communication with families is facilitated by the following measures: An open door policy which welcomes parents to visit your child any time during the day; A caring, loving, warm atmosphere; Well-informed, knowledgeable staff; Parent Handbook A carefully designed, responsive and developmentally appropriate curriculum; Daily communication regarding the child; Opportunities for parent participation; Collaborative relationships between parents and staff members which foster childrens development both at home and in the center. Parent- teacher casual interaction Parent-teacher intentional communication Parent-child classroom times Formal parent conferences

Grievances
The Centre strives to objectively and constructively deal with any grievances regarding our centre. The following procedure is to ensure parents grievances are dealt with fairly and promptly: Parents are encouraged to communicate with educators in their childs program on a day to day basis so that issues can be resolved immediately if they arise. Most problems can be solved in this manner. If they are not resolved by first talking to the immediate staff person, then the parent should address the issue with the Manager. If the problem is still not rectified then the following should apply: 7|Page

A meeting will be arranged between the Centre Coordinator, manager and parent to discuss the issue. A record of the meeting will be made and both parties will receive a copy including next steps to rectify the situation (as required). The manager will discuss the issue with the staff person to whom the grievance is addressed and notify them about the plan to rectify the situation. If the parent is not satisfied that the grievance has been dealt with then the manager will be required to take further action and address the Board of Education with respect to further action.

One months fee is required for deposit to hold your childs spot. This deposit will be applied to the last month of the school year, or returned if 60 days notice of withdrawal is received.

Monthly fees
Based on a Sept-June 10 month program and are divided into ten monthly payments. Post-dated cheques dated 1st of the month are required with the first payment due August 1st (which pays for September). We are unable to reduce fees for absences due to illness or vacation. Your monthly fee guarantees that your child retains his or her spot in the program. * Fees are subject to change and a minimum of two months notice of fee changes will be provided.

Subsidy
If a parent is obtaining subsidy, this must be arranged prior to enrollment, or they will be required to pay the full fees until subsidy information arrives. Parents will be responsible for all fees not covered by subsidy. Childcare subsidy is available through the Ministry of Children and Family Development http://www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/childcare/subsidy_promo.htm

Late Fee

In the case of a summer program withdrawal, written notice must be received by July 31st in order have all cheques returned.

CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS
In preschool, we may encounter persistent behaviors that are severely disruptive and challenge the safety and security of a program. If a childs behavior is physically threatening to the well-being and safety of other children 9|Page

and/or staff and additional supports to accommodate the child are unavailable, the family and staff must enter into a dialogue to evaluate the situation. The evaluation process may include the following: The centre staff will complete observations on all children. If there is a child requiring continuous support, the observations on this child will be discussed with the enrolling parent/guardian. The goal would be to work together as a team with the family. A plan will be implemented to help the child and family. If the plan is not successful, the family will be consulted. Other options will be explored with the family.

Termination of Client Services

It is the Centres right and responsibility to terminate services to an enrolled family if: the family does not abide by the expectations set up in the Centres Operating Policies Manual and Parent Handbook fees for services are not current a family is physically or mentally harassing/abusive towards educators, other parents or a child at the preschool a childs behavior is severely disruptive and/or physically threatening to the other children and/or educators a childs needs require, on a continuing and consistent basis, an inordinate amount of educator time and attention when compared to the time and attention required to attend the needs of the other children. In the case of the above and prior to termination, the manager will meet with the family to seek a solution to the problem. If a reasonable solution cannot be found or if the solution, once tried, proves to be unsuccessful, If the family/guardian refuses to avail themselves of outreach and support systems available and, if staff feels resolution to the problem cannot be achieved in this setting, the family will be required to remove their child from the program.

Other conditions also include: Recurrent Late Pick Up: The centre is unable to satisfactorily resolve problems of Late Pick Up with a family. Payment in Arrears: Fees for service are not paid according to the signed Registration / Withdrawal / Cancelation form, Parent Agreement form incomplete or missing and successful resolution of differences cannot be achieved. Abuse and Harassment: A family member harasses, threatens abuse or commits a violent act towards a staff member, child or other family involved in the child care program. We have a zero tolerance policy towards abuse and harassment.

Parent/Guardian Contract
It is important that parents read and understand the Parent Handbook and Contract in its entirety as it is a legally binding document. The Centre will have a parent information meeting prior to them signing any documents to ensure they understand the content

Gradual Entry
Gradual Entry occurs in all preschools. It provides an opportunity for the separation between you and your child to occur in a gradual and positive manner. This intake process also gives your child time to adjust to new routines, new activities and new people. This part of our program is scheduled so that each child will have an introduction within a small group before the entire group meets together as a class. Gradual Entry also provides the teachers with the opportunity to spend time with your child in a high adult-child ratio. This facilitates the beginning of a relationship between your child and their teachers. Once a child has been accepted into the centre, the manager will schedule a welcome interview with the parent and child. During this interview, the teacher will welcome the parent and child, review what is needed to begin school, and agree on a schedule for gradual entry. Different families will require different entry procedures, and the teacher will work with the parent and child to determine what will work best.

Probation Period
Once a child has been accepted into the childcare they will be placed on a 2 month probationary period. While the centre makes every effort to transition the child smoothly into the program, sometimes it is not a good fit for the child or the family. Additionally, staff will use proven guidance strategies and positive modeling to enable the child to display appropriate behavior and to be able to follow the routine of the center. After due consideration, during the period, the centre may ask the family to withdraw the child at any time. This may be for the following reasons (But not limited to): The child may not be ready for childcare. The child may be bullying other children. The child may be mistreating the toys and activities within the centre. The child may be putting others in harm (biting, hitting, kicking, punching, pulling hair, etc.)

Hours of Operation
The Centres general hours of operation are Monday through Friday
Morning Class 9:00am-11:30pm (early drop off 8:30, extra fee applies). Afternoon class 12:30pm-3:00pm.

Extreme Weather Protocol

In the event of 'extreme' weather (snow, freezing rain, wide-spread flooding etc.), it is possible that the Centre will either: Not open for the day; The decision is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to the following: Weather and road conditions BC Muslim School closures The decision to close the Centre due to extreme weather will be made at the recommendation of the Manager and in concurrence BCMS Principle. The decision to not open will be made by 7:00am and the closure will be posted on the outside doors of the building and on the outgoing Centre voicemail. Every effort will be made to contact all families by telephone or email to inform them of the closure. Should extreme weather conditions require the Centre to close early, then parents or alternates will be contacted and the children would be required to be picked up as soon as possible. Children must be signed out before they can be released, as per normal procedure. Fees will not be refunded in the event of extreme weather closures.

We kindly request that you do not to bring in toys from home. Your support in this area is necessary in order for the flow of the program to be successful.

Health
Preventative health measures are necessary in the preschool setting. If your child is not well, please keep him/her home. We will contact you or your emergency contact if your child becomes ill at preschool. Please let us know if your child contracts, or has been exposed to, a communicable disease. A form will be given to parents in order to provide us with a current list of any medications, allergies, or medical concerns your child may have. Please keep us Informed of any changes in doctors, dentists, and your child's general health. Staff can refuse a child who is too ill to attend preschool, and may request medical clearance. Before we can administer any medication to your child at school, you and your doctor will be required to sign a consent form. Medication must be in the original Pharmaceutical container, and be accompanied by the doctor's instructions.
