This paper discusses the sizing method used to select a horizontal
three-phase separator vessel using high-elliciency internals During a
project in Abqaiq Plants to revamp the NGL Recovery Plants to
increase NGL recovery, additional chilling of dhe gas resulted int larger
‘quantities of NGL. being separated from the gas. Ethylene glycol was
amected to prevent hydrate formation in the chillere ‘Thie glycol and
water mix must be separated from the NGL. The recovery is performed
in two new three-phase separation vessels. During project desig it
‘was determined that the size and cost of conventionally engineered
vessels would be excessively large. This prompted a major reevaluation
to reduce vessel size and costs. One promising alternative was the use
of high-efficiency coalescing internals, as preseuted in Use Spring 1995
issue of the Saudi Aramco Jounal of Technology, which were being tested
by Saudi Aramco to increase ail separator capacity One vendor
