1) Country overview: The Republic of Korea commonly known as South Korea is a sovereign state in East Asia.

South Korea is located on the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. It is neighbored by the People's Republic of China (Mainland China) to the west, Japan to the east, North Korea to the north, and Republic of China (Taiwan) to the south. The capital and largest city is Seoul, with a population of 10,421,782. (Total population: 4875000) Its GDP is 1,014,482 US dollars according to IMFs data from 2010. South Korea is a presidential republic and is a developed country with a very high standard of living. It is Asia's fourth largest economy and the world's 15th (nominal) or 12th (purchasing power parity) largest economy. These facts are meaningful for South Korea because South Korea used to be the country which had GDP around 100 dollars back in 1960s. In addition, the economy is export-driven, with production focusing on electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals and robotics. It especially has its outstanding performance in electronics and ship building which is shown through conglomerates in the country. It has corporations such as LG and Samsung electronics. These leaders are highly centralized oriented and are used to topdown means of decision making process. Moreover they also emphasize on the collectivism of the organization. The leaders themselves worked with unquestionable loyalty to the company and expect the followers to be loyal. This kind of leadership has been the ground for South Koreas development. This fact is evident when comparing GDP which was even lower than Philippine increase to 1,014,482 dollars (2010 IMF data). Furthermore, current large corporations in Korea such as Samsung show this kind of leadership leading them to success. However after 1988, the flow of Korean students who went overseas increased. When they returned Korea was more opened and many of them are working in Multi-nation Corporations. These Korean in the manager position has different leader from one talked about previously. They lead more in the westernized way. Koreans change their jobs three times on average during their total work period while American changes their jobs 10 times and British changes 7 times. Korean people consider loyalty important and privileges they get through continuous service year in one company is important. -Enthusiasm: Low enthusiasm for individual task due to collectivism -Integrity: Low integrity due to high power-distance. Information is not transparent between the leader and follower -Skill: many high skilled labor forces shown through large IT sector in Korea and these days, companies

encourage workers to gain more skills through intensive on the job training and funding education outside of work. -Creativity: Low creativity due to high degree of uncertainty avoidance -Willingness to overcome challenges: Along the same line with Enthusiasm and creativity. -Higher standards higher then required: Also low due to high degree of uncertainty avoidance 5) Effective leader analysis: Comment on every trait regarding your country using Hofstedes theories as a base and use other resources in order to explain. -Challenge the process: Low. Shown through decreasing percentage of young entrepreneurs -Inspire a shared vision: High Collectivism show the clear shared vision inspired by leaders -Enable others to act: Also High which is shown through collectively organized process -Model the way: High. Leader has strong power to model the followers due to centralized leadership. -Encourage the heart: Low. This is due to big power distance between leader and follower 6) Short Summary Korea is a country with high Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI) in the Hofstedes Cultural Dimensions. People are unwilling to take risks. As a result, strict rules, laws, policies, and regulation that are applied by the leaders are crucial. In addition, South Korea is a country with strong collectivism. This is because the country is based on Confucian beliefs the society fosters strong relationships where leaders take high authority and responsibility for fellow members and the followers have strong loyalty to the leaders.
