Undiscovered Italy: Ascoli Piceno in the Marche Region by Francine Segan

December 15th, 2011

I recently had the best meal of my life, and of course, it was in Italy! And so began my love affair with the entire province of Ascoli Piceno one of the most marvelous, and yet relatively undiscovered, areas of Italy. Un-touristy and friendly, beautifully restored yet totally authentic, and still relatively inexpensive compared to other Italian regions. Ascoli Piceno has it all ancient Roman ruins, medieval hilltop towns, Renaissance art, lively nightlife. The area has mountains as well as beaches, nature, culture, shopping and fabulous food and wines. See it on Scoop.it, via Le Marche another Italy

A salon of ideas and an institution in Ascoli, for years it was home to the Senato association of city worthies. King Victor Emmanuel came here in incognito in 1908 and 1910 to buy the famous Anisetta, and granted the title Supplier to the Royal Household. Mascagni is said to have started writing his opera La Lodoletta here. During the closing years of the last war, the painter Guttuso first planned his LOrsa Maggiore in these rooms. Stuparich, Zandonai, Badoglio, Sartre, and Hemingway all passed by, and Trilussa, beguiled by the Anisetta, wrote: How many fables and sonnets Meletti has inspired in me! In Le Marche folklore, Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts to children filling their socks with candy and presents (if they are good or a lump of coal or dark candy if they are bad), throughout Italy on Epiphany Eve (the night of January 5) in a similar way to Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus. The character may have originated in central Italy, then spread as a tradition to the rest of Italy. There is evidence to suggest that Befana is descended from the Sabine/Roman goddess named Strina. Ask any Italian about Tuscany, Lombardy, or the Veneto and they can rattle off a list of the attractions of these well-known regions. But bring up Le Marche, scrunched between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea in Italy, and they may fall silent. Its a mystery why. Less than three hours drive from Rome, Le Marche features sandy beaches and great seafood on its Adriatic Coast, rolling hills topped with medieval fortified towns and villages to the west, along with snow-capped peaks in the south.
