Bathroom Breaks

To develop a comprehensive class management plan, a teacher needs to create and teach students procedures they are to follow during specific periods in a classroom and school events (Jones & Jones, 2010). An important elementary classroom procedure for primary grades includes bathroom breaks. My procedures for students to use the bathroom are as follows: 1. Teacher posts on the on the bulletin board bathroom instructions for students to see and read. 2. The bathroom procedure is clearly visible and easy to read. 3. The teacher will teach and have students practice the bathroom procedure by performing skits and other role playing activities. 4. The bathroom procedures are as follows: a. If the bathroom is in the classroom, the procedure is: The teacher will put on the blackboard a large clip with a laminated sign BATHROOM PASS. The student has to raise his or her hand and ask the teacher permission to go to the bathroom. The teacher nods his or her head, the signal giving the student permission to go to the bathroom. The student is to quietly come up to the blackboard and takes the pass without disturbing the teacher or students. If students see the bathroom pass is missing, they have to wait until the sign is returned.

The student is to return and place the bathroom pass on the large clip on the blackboard.

After the student quietly goes back to his or her desk, if another student must go to the bathroom, he or she can raise her hand for permission.

b. If the bathroom is outside the classroom, the procedure is: The teacher will put on the blackboard two large clips with laminated signs girls bathroom pas and boys bathroom pass. The student has to raise his or her hand and ask the teacher permission to go to the bathroom. The teacher nods his or her head, the signal giving the student permission to go to the bathroom. The student is to quietly come up to the blackboard and take the girl or boy bathroom pass without disturbing the teacher or students. Only one boy and one girl are allowed to go to the bathroom at a time. Each student will write his or her name on the form and stamp the time leaving on the left side of the form with the Time Stamper Machine (I plan to buy and put in the class). The student puts the form in the basket next to the Time Stamper. The student has 10 minutes to go to the bathroom and return. Once the student returns, he or she takes their form from the basket and stamps the time he or she returns on the right side of the form. The student will put the form in the basket labeled IM BACK which will be used also for other reasons a student must leave the classroom (e.g. take

something to the administrative office for the teacher, etc.). NOTE: I plan to use the forms to assess in a spreadsheet patterns for the bathroom which may lead to developing another plan or modifying the current plan. The student will quietly return to his or her desk without interrupting the teacher or class.

Students in primary elementary grades will have to use the bathroom at times during instruction, activities, or independent working. A bathroom procedure helps the students to form a routine or habit to use the bathroom that will not disrupt a teachers instruction or student learning. For a teacher to develop an effective classroom management plan to explain and teach to students, a bathroom procedure is an important routine necessary to reduce confusion, interruptions, and misbehavior during instruction or student learning.
