Agribusiness has long been recognised as an important sector of the Malaysian economy especially for its contribution of export earnings. Against the backdrop of industrialisation, agriculture and agribusiness will continue to be significant to the economic growth and development of Malaysia. This is very much reflected in the recent National Economic Model and the Tenth Malaysia Plan. While there are no doubts that many efforts to grow the industry have been made and though plans have been formulated, progress has been slow. The New Economic Model and the Tenth Malaysia Plan seem to be transforming the way industries perform including the agriculture industry. Industries can no longer operate on the status quo but must be innovative and creative as highlighted in the Tenth Malaysia Plan that high-income economies are characterised by a higher percentage of innovation-driven entrepreneurship, such as businesses using innovative business models, companies that bring new products and services to market and businesses using new technologies to stay ahead (p. 169). The agriculture and agribusiness industry can only survive and remain competitive if it is able to create a business model as well as products which are deemed high value. As one of the National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs), the agriculture industry have been given greater importance to foster economic growth; to increase its GDP contributions to 2% by 2015 under the Tenth Malaysia Plan. DAY 1
8.00am 9.00am 9.10am Registration Opening Remarks Beyond Blueprints and Vision: Does Malaysia have the Capacity to Implement Greater Agriculture Development? Whilst great aspirations and visions are necessary to guide the nation towards the path of success, the need to review the capacity to implement the efforts to achieve this vision is proving to be more vital. This session examines if Malaysia has the capacity to carry out its strategies to achieve a thriving agribusiness industry. With the issue of brain drain and agriculture deemed as a non-lucrative industry, the lack of human power to propel the industry to greater development proves to be a threat. What can the industry do to overcome this? Technology is said to be able to increase productivity and reduce the industrys dependency on manpower whilst giving greater returns in the long run. Modernising agriculture through the use of new machinery and technology had quickened the pace of development in countries such as China. Does Malaysia have the required technology? Does Malaysia have the necessary input base to achieve a more productive agribusiness sector? 10.10am Refreshments 10.30am Public Private Partnership (PPP) in Agribusiness: Creating Sustainable Returns through Smart Partnerships Under the 10th Malaysia Plan, the government recognises that the private sector should drive growth of the nation and PPPs are one of the initiatives to drive the sectors within the economy. With abundance of natural resources, the potential to grow the agriculture industry are aplenty but the right synergy must be built to bring the agriculture industry onto a higher pedestal. PPPs have the potential to further beget growth in agribusiness if it is well implemented. This session uncovers the potential, challenges and way forward through what is called as intelligent partnership. 12.30pm Lunch 2.00pm Biotechnology: The New Driver of Economic Growth Malaysias sees that it is through innovation and creativity that is the catalyst to reach its high income economic status by year 2020 and biotechnology is said to be the major driver of growth over the next decade. While traditional agriculture methods are still being used, agriculture associated research and development are now moving towards biotechnology to generate new sources of wealth-value added products to propel the agriculture industry. It is high time Malaysia embarks on a journey to improve its technology in order to be competitive in line with achieving its aspirations to be a high income economy. 3.30pm Creating High Value Agriculture Products Lack of research and development support (R&D) impedes the potential of the agriculture sector to be developed further. Countries such as Japan and Korea, who are advanced in their R&D has attracted foreign investments into their country. The New Economic Model (NEM) which states that Malaysia has yet to be recognised as a producer of innovative products presents the profound need for the country to embark on a R&D intensive journey and agriculture, being a contributor to the overall economy should have the R&D support to facilitate high growth of the industry. This session looks at the current R&D capacity; the availability of R&D infrastructure, the investment regulatory framework, R&D commercialisation, R&D skilled workers and other critical issues to create higher value added agri products in line with the nations efforts to increase the industrys contribution to GDP. 5.00pm End of Day 1

9.10am Ensuring Successful Ventures in Malaysia: Examining Key Investment Issues in Agri Business As the nation embarks on a journey to jumpstart its aspirations to be a high economy nation, injecting foreign investments has been given importance in the Tenth Malaysia Plan. In view that Agriculture is one of the National Key Economic Activities, the industry must set the path right to lure investors into the economy. This session reviews and discusses the investors perspective in the Malaysian Agri-Business industry; how the sector looks in relation to its regional counterparts; factors foreign investors consider; and what are the factors which attract foreign investors.

Does the rural and agro-industrial sector have development policies that help to consolidate these linkages? What are the main limitations and opportunities for building favourable agribusiness linkages? 12.30am Lunch 2.00pm Moving Beyond Local Shores Through Standards & Brand Recognition As competition escalates, standards have become an increasing tool to bring rise to any industry. The agri-business is no exception. While policies have not been passed for mandatory use of standards, standards play an important role in propelling the business and industry to greater heights. Countries like Singapore and Japan are recognised as brands with quality assurance and Malaysia needs to build on its reputation in order to penetrate into the global market. With emerging agriculture producing countries on the rise, quality may set to give Malaysia a competitive advantage over its regional peers. Market Access Is there a demand for Malaysian agriculture products? How can Malaysias agribusiness penetrate into the overseas market? And the impacts of liberalisation of trade to Malaysias agribusiness industry are some of the questions this session seeks to review. Standards STANDARDS MALAYSIA speaks about the current efforts being taken to gain international recognition of the Malaysian Standards (MS) and how the agribusiness industry can benefit from this recognition. 3.30pm Sustainability as Basis of a Competitive Model As sustainability issues become more eminent as climate change issues intensify paired with the growing concern of the health hazards chemical fertilisers, the local agriculture industry is facing a transition. In view of the growing demand to address sustainability issues, the Third Agriculture Plan (1998-2010) seeks to address this issue. Poor harvest practices which were found to be a norm amongst farmers also adds to this issue of sustainability besides the rise of depleting water resources and scarce land availability in the country. Finding a viable model that facilitates sustainability whilst promoting eco friendly practices may give the nations agribusiness industry a competitive edge. This session seeks to review if Malaysia has the capacity and current efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and what the industry needs to embark on in order to be sustainable. 5.00pm End of Conference
