Introduction: Nonionic surfactants are those that carry no net charge. As with all other surfactants, the nonionic type also has a fatty tail known as the lipophile, and a water loving head known as the hydrophile. The water loving section of the nonionic is made by adding units of ethylene oxide to the water loving head, or by employment of sugar polyols. Nonionic surfactants are often characterized by their hydrophilic lipophilic balance or HLB. HLB is a calculation based on this balance of water/oil loving character. High HLB values indicate good water, or polar solvent solubility of the surfactant, while low HLB values are indicative of good solubility in non polar systems, such as oil. All of the HLB data shown in this brochure are calculated by Davies HLB scale. With increasing levels of ethoxylation the water loving character of the nonionic increases, and thus the HLB increases. With propoxylation, the water loving character of the nonionic decreases. Also, increasing the size of the fatty tail will decrease the water loving character. The decrease in water loving character will cause the HLB to also decrease. Nonionic surfactants are often used for wetting, detergency, foam stabilization, de-foaming, rheology modification, dispersion, and emulsification, or demulsification. The nonionic family is compatible with other surfactant families such as amphoteric, anionic or cationic. Akzo Nobel Surface Chemistry LLC, (Akzo Nobel Surfactants) offers a wide variety of nonionic products for use in these applications. It is the intention of this document to help the formulator find the correct nonionic for their application.

Nonyl Phenol Alkoxylates: Witconol nonyl phenol based nonionic surfactants are used in many industries. They are very good at wetting, dispersion, and emulsification.
