ESP Steering Angle Sensor Calibration ESP Steering Angle Sensor Calibration Updated 29 Mar. 2005
Ross-Tech is not responsible for any damage or problems that may result from following these instructions. They are to be used at your own risk. As always, you should refer to a Factory Repair Manual for your vehicle! This procedure details how to perform the zero position calibration for the Steering Angle Sensor (G85) in many VW/Audi vehicles equipped with ESP (Electronic Stability Program). This procedure should be performed when vehicle alignment is performed or if any of the following components have been removed or replaced: ABS/EDL/ASR/ESP control unit (J104) Steering Angle Sensor (G85) Steering Column

There are certain test conditions that must be met before doing this procedure: Start the vehicle. Turn the steering wheel one turn to the right and one turn to the left. Drive in a short distance straight line on a level surface at a speed not higher than 20 km/h. If the steering wheel is straight during the test drive then stop the vehicle with the wheels pointed straight Ensure that the steering wheel is not moved again. Keep the engine running and do not switch off the ignition.

Procedure for performing the zero position calibration for the Steering Angle Sensor (G85) on VW Golf, GTI, Jetta, and Audi TT: [Select] [03 - ABS Brakes] [Login - 11] Enter 40168 [Do It!] [Basic Settings - 04] Group 060 [Go!] This will store the zero (centered) position of the steering wheel. There should be a displayed message that reads: "Steer. angle sender compens OK". If you get an error, it may mean the Login was not successfully performed. Click the [Done, Go Back] button and you're all set.

Procedure for performing the zero position calibration for the Steering Angle Sensor (G85) on VW Passat and Audi A4/S4, A6/S6, and A8/S8: [Select] [03 - ABS Brakes] [Login - 11] Enter 40168

[Do It!] [Basic Settings - 04] Group 001 [Go!] This will store the zero (centered) position of the steering wheel. There should be a displayed message that reads: "Steer. angle sender compens OK". If you get an error, it may mean the Login was not successfully performed. Click the [Done, Go Back] button and you're all set.

Now all that was done was a battery change NOTHING else, EVERY fuse & connection (+/-) around the battery area have been checked (and re-checked) as its starting to seriously pi** me off. before the battery was changed steering assist was fully operational with no lamp lit on the dash. the ABS/ESP is a Teeves MK60 unit it was changed/re coded earlier in the (last)year with a refurbed unit. so i can recode the steering while vag com is plugged in all lights go out steering assist is fully operational, login to the module is always sucessful, but as soon as i pull the cable and turn off the ignition all go's pete Tong again...... any ideas guys ? thanks must go to "windy" ( i have been on the end of his user name so i wish that on no-one) for posting this. last stop is to hand it to VW !!!!

I undertook the adaption in both recommended ways first way as listed in my post above and in the manner shown below (neither helped) Adaptation Basic Setting Sensor for Steering Angle (G85) Prerequisites: * Start the vehicle. * Turn the steering wheel one turn to the right and one turn to the left.

* * * * *

Drive in a short distance straight line on a level surface at a speed not higher than 20 km/h. If the steering wheel is straight during the test drive then stop the vehicle with the wheels pointed straight. Ensure that the steering wheel is not moved again. Keep the engine running and do not switch off the ignition. System voltage at least 12.0 V.

[Select] [03 - Brake Electronics] [Coding-II - 11] OR (if Coding-II is not available) [Security Access - 16] Enter 40168, to enable the basic setting. [Do it!] [Basic Settings - 04] Group 060 [Go!] Activate the Basic Setting. [ON/OFF/Next] After a successful basic setting, field 2 should say "OK". [Done, Go Back] To make sure the basic setting was succesful, check the sensor again. [Measuring Blocks - 08] Group 004 [Go!] Check field 1, the value has to be between -1.5 and +1.5 . [Done, Go Back] [Close Controller, Go Back - 06] Note: After successful basic setting, the Steering Limit Stop needs to be adapted too. Steering Limit Stop Adaptation (Engine still running) * * * * * * * * Center steering wheel (10) and hold it centered for 5 seconds. Turn steering wheel completely to the left and hold it there for a second. Turn steering wheel completely to the right and hold it there for a second. Center steering wheel (10). Switch OFF engine and ignition. Switch ON ignition. Wait 5 seconds. Steering Assist Warning Lamp should turn OFF. If it doesn't, perform a short test drive.
