Mochtar Riady, Chairul Tanjung and Shanti L Poesposoetjipto among top entrepreneurs honored at the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2009.
23rd November 2009, Jakarta In a night of grand celebration, 24 top entrepreneurs in Indonesia received the most prestigious title in the region for entrepreneurship at the Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta. The Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2009 (APEA) was organized by Enterprise Asia, a regional NGO promoting entrepreneurship. The Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards (AREA), which took place in the same evening, honored seven (7) outstanding businesses for championing sustainable and responsible entrepreneurship. They were recognized for their achievements in leading the way in their green initiatives, positively impacting the communities in which their businesses are present and their continuous effort in developing people within and outside their organizations effectively developing the workforce of the nation. This year, at the Award Ceremony, Enterprise Asia honored Mochtar Riady, founder and chairman of Lippo Group, with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his outstanding entrepreneurial contribution towards the development of the nation.

Befittingly, in his opening speech, the Minister of Industry of Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Mohamad S. Hidayat said, It is common knowledge that a nations economy is only as strong as the total sum of contributions by both the government and the private sector. Behind these are often individual entrepreneurs people who drive companies, big and small, lead them to greater heights and in the process, contribute to nation building. Chairul Tanjung, chairman of Para Group, was honored as the Entrepreneur of the Year. The Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award was received by Shanti L. Poesposoetjipto, Chairman of PT. Samudera Indonesia and Erwin Aksa, Chief Executive Officer of Bosowa Corporation respectively. Minister M.S. Hidayat added that, These entrepreneurs honored tonight exemplify the spirit of success as recently outlined by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who named Empowerment, Entrepreneurship and Partnership as the key factors of success for Indonesia. This proves that the seeds of success for the nation is already implanted and that the continued role of the entrepreneurs, large and small, is to continue to work with the government to ensure continuous economic progress, create opportunity for the less fortunate and work to ensure everyone has a place in the evolving, vibrant civic society of Indonesia. The AREA winners in the Green Leadership Awards are PT. Indo-Bharat Rayon, PT. Unilever Indonesia Tbk and PT. Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BNI), taking lead as businesses which are environmentally friendly and sustainable. Receiving the Community Engagement Awards area LOral Indonesia, Accor Indonesia and BNI for their outstanding efforts in creating long term positive impacts in the society where their business operates. Recognized for their people first initiatives in developing their organizations are PT. Bank Mandiri (Persero) Tbk and STIKOM The London School of Public Relations Jakarta.

William Ng, President of Enterprise Asia noted that through APEA and AREA, the NGO hopes to create the awareness of the importance of responsible entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship as an important building block of a nation. Only when we are able to sustain a robust entrepreneurial culture, which therefore gives a nation the ability to move and react rapidly in the shifting market, are we able to withstand negative global economic occurrences, and have a stronger voice in the new global economic order, Ng said. ###
