Quote from NIST (National Institute of Standard Technology) Volume 109, Number 5, September-October 2004 Stability Comparison of Recordable Optical DiscsA Study of Error Rates in Harsh Conditions Conclusion : It is demonstrated here that CD-R and DVD-R media can be very stable (sample S4 for CD-R and sample D2 for DVD-R). Results suggest that these media types will ensure data is available for several tens of years and therefore may be suitable for archival uses. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for customers to identify these more stable media. It is clear that an archive quality grade for media is necessary and should be based on a number of quality parameters rather than brand name or manufacturer. NIST has been leading this effort in consultation with other government agencies and has assisted in the formation of the Government Information Preservation Working Group to address this issue. This working group plans to clearly state their needs in regard to the longevity of optical media and work with the optical disc industry to develop requirements for an archival CD or DVD recordable media. A comprehensive study is underway in a collaboration between NIST and the Library of Congress (LoC) with two principle objectives: 1) to determine the life expectancy of DVD recordable media and 2) to develop a test which media manufacturers can use to assign an archive quality grade to their product.

How to identify archival grade disc by end users : Certified Logo provided by 3rd party

A category of disc, tested by ADTC comply with ISO10995 test method will be approved if passed, and given a Certified logo with particular serial # and allowed to use the logo to its disc and product packaging. Also the part # will be listed under ADTC website. ADTC (Archival Disc Test Center) http://n-adtc.org/ It is expected that End users can identify the Logo and solve the longevity issue they might have, at the time of purchase It would be used as guideline to identify for the user applications such as documents, images, movie archives requiring long time preservation.
