Rabbis Corner
A Rabbi and a Cantor and Six Thousand Jews Walk into a Room No, thats not the beginning of a joke; its a description of the Union for Reform Congregations Biennial gathering, currently underway in Washington D.C. Ive come with two of our congregational leaders to join six thousand other reform Jews from around the country for five days of learning together, praying together, debating the issues of the day, and hearing from the leaders of the world of Jewry and of the United States as well as artists, performers, and other fascinating presenters. For me, the Biennial is like seeing my life flash before my eyes. There are friends from childhood, rabbinical school, Jewish summer camps, working in Israel, and nearly every other stage of my life. Its actually difficult to walk from one side of the conference center to the other, for two reasons: first because there are simply so many people here the facility is stretched to its capacity. Second, I cant walk 75 feet without running into someone else who wants to say hello and with whom I want to catch up. This morning, Congressman Eric Cantor spoke (about his support for Israel; not a word about domestic issues) and tomorrow afternoon, President Obama is slated to speak (more on domestic issues, I suspect). This week also marks the transition from URJ President Eric Yoffie, who has served for sixteen years, to Rabbi Rick Jacobs, a friend of long standing. Truly a moment of celebration! The focus of the week is Youth Engagement the question of how we can best connect younger Jews to Judaism and the Jewish community. Weve heard from Wendy Mogel (Blessings of a B- is her latest book) about the nature of the adolescent from a neuropsychological perspective. Others have underscored the many ways education is both the problem and the answer when it comes to engaging youth. The conversation which is, in part, the work of the movements commission on life long Jewish learning, of which until recently I was co-chair is just beginning. At Sinai the conversation began this past year and while low hanging fruit has been picked there is much planting and nurturing we need to do soon for the future. I look forward to have a chance to share what weve learned with you upon our return. Rabbi David B. Cohen

Reflections
Be ye perfect even as your Father is perfect (Mat. 5:48), is an admonition which is inspiring but hardly practical. Jesus, exemplar of this strategy, suffered an early and painful death. His most earnest disciples experienced martyrdom. Were a large percentage of the goodly people to observe this noble teaching, they would face annihilation. Only the wicked would be left to populate the world. Jewish expectations of human behavior are far more modest. Rather than striving for the saintly individual, Judaism sets as its goal the godly community. Gods original revelation to humankind, the Torah, is a group document. While the patriarchs and the prophets could hear God speak, subsequent generations were denied personal revelation. In its place, a group of rabbis, representing the communitys intellectual leadership, met in council. As a legal question arose, they debated the matter. The decision, established by majority vote, was identified as the word of God. While the expectations of a godly individual are extravagant, not those of a holy community. In a godly collective, the shortcomings of one are compensated for by the strengths of another. The process is scuttled by fanaticism. It operates effectively if each contributes generously of thought and effort to the well being of the community., while respecting the contributions of other members. Building the world community begins with the family, with respect for the thoughts and prerogatives of each member. A business or corporation rises to holy status when it treats with respect the well being of: employees, customers, even competitors. Founders of our nation, familiar with Biblical teaching, sought to make of the United States a beacon of light to peoples of the world. The success of this endeavor is contingent upon our honoring within this nation the views and rights of people of good will whose ideologies differ from our own. It was the prophetic vision that one day there would be universal peace, with even carnivorous beasts living at peace with their former prey. Such extravagant expectations for the well being of the universe are contingent upon our capacity for building holy communities in our homes, schools and neighborhoods. Rabbi Jay R. Brickman

Cantors Notes
This summer, while attending the American Conference of Cantors Annual Convention in Boston, MA, I had the opportunity to visit Mayyim Hayyim. From their website www.mayyimhayyim.org, Mayyim Hayyim is a 21st century creation, a mikveh rooted in ancient tradition, reinvented to serve the Jewish community of today. A mikveh is the ritual bath used in Jewish tradition to ritually cleanse and purify the body at moments of status change in the life cycle. The mikveh and the ritual of mikveh have been in existence since the time of the Torah. A visit to Jerusalem today will reveal ancient ritual baths from the time of the Second Temple. In other words, for all time, mikveh has been a present and essential ritual to the Jewish people. Most commonly across the Jewish community, the mikveh is used for women during the monthly cycle of menstruation in accordance with the laws of niddah, and at the time of a wedding before her status changes to wife. Mikveh is also an essential component of completing the rites of conversion to Judaism. The mikveh is also used for the act of toivel, immersing utensils in order to make them suitable for kosher dining. The collection of water in the mikveh must be created with naturally existing water; namely from a spring, or a collection of rain water, or snow run-off. Of course, there are specifications for how much water must be in the mikveh in order for it to be usable to fulfill mitzvot. The amount of water required is, in modern terms, close to 200 gallons. It must be enough water to cover the user completely. We are taught that, in order for ones immersion into the mikveh to fulfill the ritual requirements, every part of the body must be completely covered in water, and there can be nothing to block the body from having contact with the water: Nail polish must be taken off, contact lenses removed. My time visiting Mayyim Hayyim in Boston left me thinking a great deal about the role of mikveh in our Reform Jewish lives today. In contemporary liberal Jewish life, mikveh is a ritual few will encounter. Those who are born Jewish are unlikely to choose the mikveh at moments of their life like marriage or menstruationbut, like the team at Mayyim Hayyim in Boston, I believe that mikveh is an important part of our Jewish journeys, though we may need to think differently about what changes in status we want to mark. There is a new call for women in their ninth month of pregnancy to immerse (use the mikveh). This moment of transition to motherhood has been marked by immersion in our history, and is experiencing a resurgence as young Jews seek new ways to find spiritual moments in their every day lives. For what else, is the mikveh being used? To mark the end of a journey of healing after chemotherapy is complete, or a hospital stay is over. To mark a new beginning following divorce to acknowledge a new status in the world after the period of shloshim (the thirty most severe days of mourning after burial) is complete. Ritual immersion is being used in coming out ceremonies and to welcome menopause. While the idea of using the mikveh for all of these reasons isnt new, its not yet commonplace either. Perhaps it should be. Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, "The old becomes new, and the new becomes holy." Mikveh is an ancient concept, but how we use it can be completely new, and we can then find holiness, and a sense of Jewish spirituality in meaningful transitions in our lives. Cantor Rebecca Robins

Our congregation recently established the Congregation Sinai Endowment Fund within the Milwaukee Jewish Federations Jewish Community Foundation (JCF). In doing so, Sinai joined other Milwaukee synagogues and agencies to help secure the future of Jewish Life and the long-term viability of our synagogue. The fund is restricted for the use and benefit of Congregation Sinai and gives our members and their families the opportunity to make tax-favored planned gifts to support the programs and services we provide now and into the future. The JCF will help Sinai develop endowment opportunities tailored to the needs of individual congregants and will work with our own Endowment Committee, to spread the word about endowment giving. Midreshet Shabbat
This year Congregation Sinai will be offering a new program geared toward families who want to extend their celebration of Shabbat to the synagogue with learning, singing and fun with our clergy and other families. Midreshet Shabbat is a series of family programs for Shabbat afternoons over the course of the year. It will meet from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. with some time for family learning and fun; some time for learning by age; and completing the evening with havdallah together. The years theme will be Bible Families - Family Dynamics - a great way to explore sibling and parent child relationships! The cost of the program will be $36.00 per family for the whole program. This years topic for the Holocaust Youth Essay Contest is: There are many heroes of the Holocaust: victims, survivors, righteous gentiles, resisters and liberators. Choose one group and explain why they were heroes and what lessons have they passed on that are still relevant today. Only essay form entries will be accepted. Entries cannot exceed 1,200 words and must represent the independent effort of the writer. Essays must be typed or printed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper only. They will be judged on originality, content and quality of expression. The essay contest is open to all students in grades 7-9 (Division I) and 10-12 (Division II). The essay must be accompanied by a title page containing the following information: student's name, home address, telephone number and e-mail; name of school, address, telephone number, teacher's name and the grade. No pages in the essay should include their name or any family names or personal identification. Entries must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2012 by 4:00 PM and mailed to: Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd., Whitefish Bay, WI, 53217, Attn: Judges. The top two winners in each Division will win a trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Their school will receive a book. The award winners will be announced and presented on Sunday, April 22, 2012. And keep in mind some upcoming CoSY events, including Winter Kallah at OSRUI in Oconomowoc January 20-22, 2012 and Spring Kallah in Milwaukee; April 19-22, 2012. Congregation Sinai will host the Spring Kallah on Friday, April 20. That evening, Cosy members will help lead our Shabbat Services. If you have high school teens at home, we will be looking for families to host out of town NFTY members (North American Federation of Temple Youth). It will be a fantastic event! Saturday evening, December 10th, CoSY (Sinais High School Youth Group) hosted an overnight program at the synagogue. Thirty seven students from as far away as Minneapolis and Chicago came and engaged is a number of programs, which included: wrapping presents for at-risk and homeless teens in the Kids Matter program; conducting a historic Latke Hamentaschen Debate to ascertain which food is more worthy (the latke won); leading a beautiful Havdalah service; and having a plain old good time. CoSY board members were elated with the number of participants and the success of the program. They are busy planning upcoming events which you can learn about

NFTY CANOe - Winter Kallah

Acheinu (Men's spirituality group) will meet on a NEW SCHEDULE for the remainder of the year! Acheinu Dates Tuesday, January 10 @ 7:45am at Sinai and Sunday, February, 5 @ 10:30 to noon at Sinai Our Brotherhood Coffee Series is open to all congregants. The January coffee will be an informal gathering after the Sinai pancake breakfast. Several of our Brotherhood members help flip those delicious pancakes and we have therefore set our start time for the January 8th coffee at 11:00am. The topic of the day will be "Fantasy Baseball camps; a once in a lifetime experience!" Milton Hwang attended the Milwaukee Brewers camp (yes, you have seen him on the Brewers scoreboard!) and Marc Kartman attended a Major League Broadcasters fantasy camp. Marc got to work with ESPN'S Chris Berman and Joe Morgan and also announced an inning of live MLB televised baseball! If you are curious about how this all went (for example: did Milton actually get a hit? Did Marc emerge as a threat to Joe Buck's career?) please join us for coffee, bagels, and good old fashioned story telling on January 8th! The February Brotherhood coffee will be another 'DON'T MISS EVENT"! Psychologist Michael Mazius and Head of School of MJDS, Brian King will discuss the difficult nature of parenting and managing inevitable conflicts that arise from raising Jewish children in a secular, modern world. Israel Committee
While visiting family and friends in Israel, our small nuclear unit - Alex, Hagai, Dan and I immersed ourselves in a sweet feeling of being home. Meeting relatives and close family friends, and observing people on the streets of Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem, gave our adult sons the freedom to draw their own conclusions and gain a new perspective on Israel. They experienced the sights, sounds, and tastes of Israel; read newspapers (in English); witnessed a political rally, Free Israel, in Jerusalem; wandered through Mea Shaarim, through the old city of Jerusalem, the tunnels under the Western Wall, the museums of Eretz Israel and art in Tel Aviv, and the beautiful Bahai gardens in Haifa. We took a Eti Ganin with Rabbi Israel Horovitz (left) and tour of a modern Norman Loberant winery in Zichron Yaakov, visited Korazim in the Upper Gallilee with an amazing view of the Kinneret, ate falafel at an Arab restaurant, and strolled through the markets of Nahalat Binyamin, Carmel, and Mahaneh Yehuda. Not everything we found was pleasant. Primarily, we were disturbed by the growing rift between some of the ultraright orthodox, and the silent majority of secular Israelis. The most recent incident was inspired by womens singing at IDF ceremonies, which offended some religious soldiers. We all wish for the separation between official (orthodox) Judaism and the state, which became a big theme in the public demonstrations and private conversations. Driving on the congested roads and streets of the cities, scarceness of affordable parking, and high prices in the restaurants and hotels, also left a negative impression. We still remember that Israeli prices were significantly lower than the ones in the US, but this is no longer true. We also hit a patch of rainy weather and elderly relatives illnesses Thats life. At the very beginning of our trip, we split from our sons, who went to the Dead Sea with their favorite cousin. They swam in the Dead Sea, and rode ATVs in the desert, which was extremely fun. In the meantime Alex and I went to Naharyia to visit our sister congregation, Emet ve Shalom. We first met Beth and Norman Loberant in their apartment. Eti Ganin with Norman Loberant in front of the congregation building Beth is the President of the congregation, and Norman is one of its founders. Unexpectedly, we discovered that Normans parents were from Kishinev, and lived just a couple of blocks away from where I grew up. They emigrated to the West after WWII, and Norman was born in Germany in a displaced persons camp. In the 80s he visited Kishinev on an assignment from the Jewish Agency and went to find the house his parents owned before the war. It was amazing to find that we had common roots, despite the different paths our lives took. Later we went to visit the building that Emet ve Shalom occupies. There we met Rabbi Israel Horowitz and Coordinator Marcos Lion, and took some photos with them. Sharon Mann, our long term contact from EVS, was out of town at the time, so we unfortunately didnt get to meet her. We reunited with our sons several days later, and from then on the four of us stayed together until the end of our trip. Many times during our brief 13-day visit we experienced unbelievable warmth from our family and friends, and from the country we consider our homeland. I hope our sons have a similar attachment. Only time will tell. Meanwhile, when I am being asked where I am from, I respond I am from Israel, even though I grew up in Kishinev, and made aliya when I was in my twenties. Israel is and will always be my homeland, and I am proud of her. Eti Ganin Israel Committee Chairperson

Bnei Mitzvah Bios
Eli Frank
Eli Frank celebrates becoming a Bar Mitzvah on January 7, 2012. Eli is the son of Jennifer Frank and Jeffrey Frank, brother of Nora, grandson of Vincent and Lois Koehler, Liliana Frank and the late Eugene Frank and great-nephew of Bernice Fagan. Eli is a 7th grader at Shorewood Intermediate School. Elis interests include Apple technology, photography, architecture and modern design. He also enjoys reading, listening to music, playing Scrabble, helping neighbors with yard work and making people laugh. Eli and his parents thank Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins and Marilyn Kraar for their time and patience preparing him for this special day.

Joe Lappin
Joe Lappin will become a Bar Mitzvah on January 21, 2012. Joe is the son of Tracy and Mike Lappin, brother to Jake and Jessie, grandson to Linda Lappin and Shelly Kohen, Muriel and the late Todd Lappin, Darrel and Charlotte Konrad. Joe is a 7th grader at Lake Shore Middle School. He enjoys many sports including, basketball, baseball, football and golf. Joe and his family would like to thank Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins and Marilyn Krarr for preparing him for this very special day.

Scott Arenzon
Scott Arenzon will celebrate becoming a Bar Mitzvah on February 11, 2012. He is the son of Robin and Steven Arenzon and brother to Naomi and Jordan. Scott is looking forward to family and friends coming together for his special day. Scott is a 7th grader at Maple Dale School. He enjoys several sports including soccer and baseball as well as just hanging out with his friends! Scott is working on a special Mitzvah project with the Milwaukee Police Department to coordinate a "Gift of Warmth" program which will provide new hats and gloves to children and adults in need throughout the city. Items will be distributed to special care facilities, battered women's shelters, the YMCA and other locations. Thank you to Rabbi Cohen, Cantor Robins, Linda Ross and Marilyn Kraar for their guidance as we prepare for this day.
