eddings have evolved so much in the past 20 years, and there are literally endless options with which todays brides are faced. Invitations are no exception there are formal, casual, letterpress, engraved, ecofriendly, the list goes on and on. From save-the-dates to invitations to programs and thank-you notes, a reputable stationer can guide you through an often overwhelming process. From her stationery design studio, graphic designer Tara Felder has been assisting area brides for more than four years to develop creative stationery suites. Here are a few quick tips from Felder to get you started. 1. Think about your wedding: Decide on what tone you want to set with your event. As a general rule, you want the pieces you mail to your guests let them know what to expect, i.e. black engraving on ecru paper usually indicates a formal affair while a colorful flat-printed invitation might allude to an intimate beach-side event. But that doesnt mean that a white invitation with letterpressed gray or navy ink is any less formal. 2. Have a budget in mind: While its totally normal to not have an idea of how much invitations will cost until you start looking, you know your overall budget and how you want to allot your resources. 3. Educate yourself: Blogs and magazines are a wealth of information and ideas to get you started, but a little goes a long way. Too much researching and looking at other peoples wedding blogs will drive you crazy. Nothing beats sitting down and meeting with a knowledgeable stationer who can help you weigh your choices and will be able to help guide you to the best options for your wedding. 4. Dont sweat the etiquette: I approach etiquette rules as a set of important guidelines set forth many years ago. But rules are often made to be broken and reinterpreted. You have to do what makes sense and works for you and your budget whether youre weighing using double-envelopes or how to word your invite.
12
5. Enjoy the journey: Dont forget this part. It should be fun. I know it can be stressful, but it should be more fun than anything. Just remember that with any luck, it wont be the best day youll ever have but just the first of many best days for you and your spouse.

hrough suction and negative pressure, massage cupping releases rigid soft tissue, drains excess fluids and toxins, loosens adhesions and lifts connective tissue and brings blood flow to stagnant skin and muscles. At Bella Rileys in the Lexington Mill complex, owner Rachel Romanelli says that she and other massage therapists at her salon and spa were trained and certified in the technique two years ago. Cupping lifts the muscles instead of pushing on them, which gives blood a chance to flow underneath, she says. This massage technique is being used effectively for people with specific issues, such as sciatica and piriformis syndrome (pain associated with the muscle deep in the buttocks thats responsible for hip rotation), as well as diabetes, migraines, sustained illnesses, and pre- and post-operative procedures plus a host of other conditions. Cupping can be performed on targeted spots, depending on what a client needs. Cupping is also used all over to stimulate the skin, which increases circulation and reduces cellulite. Bella Rileys offers 60- or 90-minute cupping sessions, as well as a specific face and neck lift.

Eyes have it. LASIK surgery corrects the refraction in the eye's natural lenses to reduce the need for glasses or contacts
t the start of a new year, people traditionally pledge to improve themselves by changing bad habits. Then they fall back into the old habits all over again. For those determined to make true changes, the knife (or laser) can be an alternative ... or at least a start down a new path. Here are five popular elective medical procedures than can make you see, look or feel better.

anyone younger than 18, and Mintz prefers patients wait until their mid 20s because the natural lenses change shape during younger years. And the reality is that the vision correction required for most people changes throughout the adult years, he said. Its difficult for someone to end up 100 percent without glasses, but the need for glasses can be reduced remarkably, Mintz said. The procedure itself takes only about 10 minutes per eye, and the surgical visit typically takes several hours, including preparation and initial recovery. Many patients speak of the immediate improvement in vision, but there is a healing process after surgery. The main point is patients need to avoid rubbing their eyes for several weeks. The standard cost for LASIK at Columbia Eye Clinic is $1,500 per eye. Check with your insurance provider because some insurance plans cover the procedure, while others consider it elective surgery.

But after a few days, those little holes poked in your face have regrown, and you have a brighter, fresher look, she said. One procedure alone can make a significant improvement. Cost ranges from $400 for the area around the eyes to $2,100 for the full face.

Augmentation/Implants
reast augmentation is to plastic surgery what LASIK is to eye surgery. National plastic surgery organizations estimate surgeons perform around 300,000 breast augmentations annually. At Capital Plastic Surgery in Columbia, Dr. Greg Sexton does a tremendous volume of the surgeries, said office manager Catherine Sexton. Over 20 years, weve become a well-oiled machine. Most women who come to Capital Plastic Surgery have done their homework on the procedure and are committed to changing the shape of their breasts, Catherine Sexton said. a 3-D breast imaging machine that allows the staff to show exactly how patients will look with different sizes of implants. They also try on implant sizers, which give an idea of how they will look and how clothes will fit. The procedure takes 30 minutes to an hour, with either saline or silicon implants. Its outpatient surgery, usually done under general anesthesia. Capital Plastic Surgery tries to schedule surgeries late in a week, with the goal of patients returning to their normal routine early the next week. The ballpark figure quoted the surgery is $5,000 for silicone implants or $4,200 for saline implants, Catherine Sexton said.

VNUS Closure
hile varicose veins can be unsightly, they also can cause pain. Theyre caused by malfunctioning veins that dont allow the blood to flow smoothly. Pooled blood causes the ugly lines and the discomfort, which most often occurs in legs but can show up elsewhere in the body. Less than a generation ago, varicose vein surgery called vein stripping was complicated, required a hospital stay and often left scars. Advances in technology in the past decade allowed doctors to perform the surgery under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. After more than 25 years as a general surgeon, Dr. Neal Reynolds recognized the burgeoning field of vein surgery and started The Vein Clinic in Columbia, according to Heather Hayes, the clinics marketing director. One of the more popular procedures he performs is VNUS Closure, which uses radio-frequency energy to seal damaged veins. Once the veins are closed, blood naturally reroutes to other veins.
ISTOCK IMAGE
Get a leg up. Varicose veins can be cleared up with the VNUS Closure method
In many cases, patients can drive themselves home after the procedure, Hayes said. With blood flowing correctly again, the pain disappears. The blocked veins fade from sight over the next few weeks. If the patients dont change the habits that prompted the original problems jobs that require a lot of
standing are one major culprit they could face recurrence of the problem. But just as the original varicose veins took years to develop, new ones usually dont show up for years. Hayes declined to reveal a price for VNUS closure operation at The Vein Clinic, but she said it usually is covered by health insurance.

Slimming sleeve. Gary Middlebrooks has had stomach sleeve surgery, which is a weight-loss procedure. He was at Lexington Medical Center recently
for a photo shoot for an in-house promotion for Riverside Surgical Group.
STOMACH
Sleeve gastrectomy
he gold standard of weight loss surgery for years was the gastric bypass. These days, the sleeve gastrectomy is challenging for the top spot among patients at Riverside Surgical Group. The sleeve gastrectomy offers as good a weight loss at the gastric
bypass, but its not as involved and has fewer potential problems, according to Dr. Jim Givens, a bariatric surgeon and a partner in Riverside. The gastric bypass closes off part of the stomach and reroutes food past most of the small intestines. The smaller stomach means you feel full after eating less food. But the bypass also routes food past parts of the digestive system that take in certain nutrients.
32
The sleeve gastrectomy also shrinks the stomach, reducing it to the size of a banana by removing a portion. But the digestive tract stays intact, routing through the small intestines. Patients who combine the surgery with healthy eating and exercise programs lose an average of 60 percent to 70 percent of their excess weight over two years, Givens said. Both procedures arent for folks hoping to lose a few pounds. Theyre for patients with serious obesity problems at least 100 pounds above their ideal body weight, Givens said. The sleeve gastrectomy is minimally invasive surgery, done with a laparoscope inserted in a small incision. Patients usually spend one to two days in a hospital and are out of work for a week to 10 days. Its major surgery with a major price tag, in the $17,000-$20,000 range. It also can have major health implications combating diabetes, strokes and joint problems. Thats why its covered by many insurance plans. Medicare, however, doesnt yet pay for sleeve gastrectomies. We tell our patients theres no operation that is just magically going to have them lose weight, Givens said. They have to want to change their lifestyle.

his was my introduction to solar energy: In 1993 I moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., into a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired house, with a single solar panel propped on the flat roof. The flat roof, of course, was a disaster in a place given to intense downpours, and it soon put me on a first-name basis with the roofer. The solar panel, which during the first viewing mattered less than the living rooms peaked redwood ceiling, turned out to be astonishing. I had five children and that panel provided all our hot water: no matter how much we needed, that panel was the little engine that could. Whoever installed that panel was on the vanguard of what would become an increasingly active industry for building supplies that use alternative energy. Today you can find a number of solar-energy products for the homeowner from something as basic and easy-to-install as solar-powered attic fans designed to keep attic temperature equal to that of the air outside to solar-panel arrays that relegate a homes hookup to the electric company to the role of backup energy source. According to Wes Tyler at the South Carolina Climatology Office, Columbia is blessed with sunshine: On average, Columbia has 115 clear days and 103 partly cloudy days, for a total of 218 days of mostly sunny days annually, he said. Thats considerably lower than Yuma, Ariz., (average: 246), but a lot better than anywhere in the state of Washington. Midlands homeowners are beginning to take advantage. Climate control. They tilt toward the south, Rudolph says of the solar panels. Now theyre set to be optimal for the fall equinox. As it gets closer to the solstice, the angle is a little different and I could manually adjust them to get a little more power, about 10 percent. Of course, the sun is not always direct and the sky is not always clear, but on a clear or partly cloudy day we create about 22 to 26 kilowatt hours this time of year. Though most installations are rooftop, the houses heavily wooded site made a pole-mounted system the better, if less aesthetic, way to go. When you drive up, you can see them, said Fralix, a retired educator. For me, its oh wow why cant they look like a tree? But the 20-by-60-foot vegetable garden provides both vegetables and some camouflage. In most months, the panels generate more power than the couple use. The panels are Sunpowers Serengeti Solar modules, installed by South Carolinas Sunstore Solar. Were Quakers and concern for the environment is part of our belief system, Rudolph said.
