Research Higher Degree Newsletter December 2011

A Time of Change After six years as post graduate coordinator, I am stepping down from the role. Associate Professor Michele Foster will become post graduate coordinator from January 1, 2012. I will miss the program directors role (but not the paperwork!) that has been a core part of my academic life at UQ. I have enjoyed the developing international student cohort and the broad multi and inter disciplinary base that has provided so much opportunity to learn from each other. It has been a privilege to share in the RHD journeys of so many students and their advisory teams. The program cannot work well without the effective involvement of colleagues in the school. Thank you to past and current RHD students and my colleagues in school for all your support. Cheryl

The Class of 2011 The RHD class of 2011, an exciting mix of domestic and international students, has met weekly and enjoyed learning from and with each other. The class formed a strong network of peer support which will be a wonderful strength in managing ongoing ups and downs of an RHD candidature. I have enjoyed the chance to share the beginning of their RHD journey and look forward to catching up on progress across the next few years. Thanks to all students for bringing so much energy and interest to the class. Weve had a number of new students join us in the past six months. Dharam Bhuguns research topic is Parenting in marriages with mix cultural backgrounds. Dharam is currently supervised by Prof Robert Bland.

Thanks to all who have supported the program We are so fortunate to have Karen Bland working with RHD students who do not have English as their first language. Karens skills, support and commitment to assisting the students with their writing is invaluable to students and their advisory teams. Thank you, Karen. Caitlin Harrington, the current student representative, has worked hard to represent students on committees, raise any issues with the RHD coordinator and build networks for students in the school and across the Faculty. Thanks, Caitlin, for your hard work and commitment to the role. Thanks also to Margaret Shapiro and Deborah Setterlund for their continued supervision of students in the school as part of their honorary appointments. Their expertise is highly valued. A particular thank you to Mark Holland. As research administration officer, Marks organised, systematic and student focused approach is vital to the success of the RHD program in the school. RHD students, advisors and the post graduate coordinator appreciate Marks quiet support and attention to detail.

Three Minute Thesis Competition John Drayton and Gerald Featherstone represented the School in the 2011 Three Minute Thesis Competition. It is a hard competition for students in our school, given the complexity of some of the arguments we wish to put up. John and Gerald were terrific in the SBS finals and Gerald progressed to the Peoples Choice final. It was great to see two part time students in the competition. Thanks John and Gerald and their advisory teams. You were such engaging speakers.

Career Mentoring Session A career mentoring session held in December was well attended. The session covered career options and pathways, post docs and research positions and the new UQ Graduate School Career Advantage Program. Staff and recent RHD graduates shared experiences and tips. Thanks to all who participated. It is so important to establish an ongoing dialogue about career planning within advisory teams.

Relaunch of the RHD Blackboard Website This year we have relaunched the RHD Blackboard website. RHD students have access to the website via the eLearning link in their myUQ portal. The website will be updated with RHD announcements, materials from the RHD class, and will act as a tool that enables students to share articles, books, tips for a successful RHD candidature, interesting conferences, websites and so on; join in the discussion board to link up with other students; find out about the student representative and her role; look up the WIP presentations and find out about social events in the school. It will also have the RHD Handbook and other materials on the site. We hope that students find it a useful additional tool to support their candidature. Please let us know what you think and how you use it - we would welcome any suggestions to make this a lively site!
