THE ORIGIN OF SATAY

From just a piece of meat on a stick to a famous delicacies that had been popular throughout the world. That is how the beginning of a satay. It is just simply a meat on a stick that are been burn down and then be served with sweet and spicy taste of kuah kacang. A simple dish as this had brought up a culture and become food that had even become traditions for ages. From our grandparents until our time know this dish of satay still remain strong in the tongue of the local. A tradition that marketers found an opportunity to franchise it and this shows how much impact of satay had given to a culture. Satay is just simply a meat that are been marinated with reach herbs and spices and then be skewered and then be grill by using charcoal and then be served with a sauced. A meat is usually used to make satay such as chicken, beef, fish, and pork but there is a variation that uses tofu as main ingredients to make satay. The more authentic version uses skewers from the midrib of the coconut palm frond, although bamboo skewers are often used. Even though they are a lot variation of satay and many different ingredients are use to make it, but there are still basically the same, a meat that are been burn use charcoal and then be served with a sauce. Satay is originated to be said to come from Java, Indonesia. Satay can be found almost anywhere in Indonesia, from the hawker street to a famous 5 star hotel, satay can be found everywhere. Stay is also popular in other ASEAN country such as Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, and others. It is also be said that satay is popular in Netherlands and lets not be surprise if the once famous footballer and once Manchester United striker such as Rud Van Nistelroy love to eat satay. Satay is also been recognize in Netherlands is because Indonesia is one been ruled by the Dutch colony. In Indonesia this craze for satay has develop many kinds and variety of satay from various ingredients. Meanwhile in Malaysia, the satay is still be loved by many of the locals but no as Indonesia. Satay is most famous in Malaysia during a celebration as it is like a must have dish during a celebration. Malaysia is most famous with a special satay known as Satay Kajang. The satay kajang is very popular in Malaysia as it even have a great and establish franchise are been created based on Satay Kajang. That is how it has brought an impact to Malaysia.

Even though the real satay is from Java, the concept of sticking a meat to something and then burn it is said to come from Arab. Arabs were known to skewer their meat on swords before roasting and Middle Eastern nomads would barbecue their meat on metal skewers known as kebabs or sharwarma. The trade of spice which is very popular back then let the Arab to come to Indonesia and brought the Arab culinary knowledge to Indonesia and introducing the concept of burning meat on stick to the local. The spice trade later brought the Arab merchant to others Southeast Asian country such as Malaysia and Singapore. Similarly, during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, kebabs or sharwarma were adopted by the locals and is today a popular dish amongst the Greeks and the Cypriots besides the Turks, the Egyptians and the Arabs. The dish spread beyond to Northern India with even Beijing residents savoring fiery flavored kebabs today. Satay in Asian is very differ and more unique than the Kebab that are made by the Arab as we use wooden skewer instead of metal.
