Formula SAE IIT Roorkee

Formula SAE Australia 2011

Post-competition news & updates

Hello everyone!! It gives me immense pleasure to present before you the updates of Formula SAE IIT Roorkee team after the FSAE Australia competition. Our team performed very well in the competition and successfully finished the endurance event, a feat which has been achieved in the past by very few teams! Our motivation and sincere efforts got appreciated by everyone involved in the competition, ie the judges, organizers, and other teams. Our success could not have been possible without the support of our university administration, our faculty, sponsors and all our alumni supporters and donors. We are very thankful to everyone involved in making our dream come true, and hope to get the same support this year and years to come. Our efforts would have been meaningless without the support of our Faculty Adviser, Dr Nalin Sharda, Assistant Professor, Victoria University, Footscray. Not only did he help us in getting workshop space in the VU campus for assembly and repairs, he worked as hard as a team member to get the car up and running. It was only due to Dr Shardas, Dr Sharmas and Dr Pattabhis efforts that the team was able to perform so well in the competition. And it is only due to these gentlemen that the team did not starve during the competition! Our team is also grateful to the Aussie people, who selflessly came forward to help our inexperienced team to get out of trouble(s). Thanks to judges, organizers and scrutineers for giving us so much of personal time. Also a big thanks to all the teams for helping us getting our car out on track and cheering us up. And for letting us use their tools/equipment and lending us stuff (some of which we did not return!) Kindly read forward for a day by day account of the competition fortnight. (Detailed event report in a separate file)

Competition Day 1: Friday, 16 December, 2011

Most Hectic Day Business Plan Presentation in the morning, good job done by the presenters Immediately followed by Cost Event, judges impressed by our efforts Technical Inspection in the afternoon, where some small issues were noted by scrutineers. These needed to be fixed before our car could enter the track. Design Event in the evening. Judges were impressed by the grasp of engineering fundamentals of the team members. Back to pits to make changes for the Technical Inspection.

Competition Day 2: Saturday, 17 December, 2011

Cleared Tech-Inspection early morning! Driver egress test passed by Ashmeet Singh Sidhu. Passed the Tilt-table test. Unable to clear Noise test, as our engine made 115 db, 5 more than maximum allowed. Unable to clear Brake test as front wheels did not lock. Discovered the almost unfixable front brake caliper problem. Immediately started working on the caliper, and the exhaust to reduce the noise. Missed the Acceleration, Skidpad and Autocross events.

Competition Day 3: Sunday, 18 December, 2011

Cleared the Noise and Brake test early morning! Off to the endurance event. Started the endurance event Problems in gear shifter during the event, so car stuck in second gear all the time. Drivers Prashant Arora and Aneesh Mittal did a great job of finishing the endurance run without any further problems. Came out to be first in Fuel Economy!! Thanks to the Royal Enfield engine!

Sadly, our total time was more than the maximum time allowed to finish the endurance, so we were not awarded any points for it, or for the fuel economy. Formula SAE IIT Roorkee team did a great job overall. Our team is one of the very few teams to complete the endurance run in first attempt.

Upcoming Event: Auto Expo, New Delhi (5-11 January, 2012)

We are excited to announce that our car will be on display in Hall 12 at AutoExpo 2012, New Delhi. We would be honoured to have you visit our stall, to meet our team and look at the efforts of IIT Roorkee students and future engineers.
