Bellows Manufacturing
Thebellowselementisthemostimportantcomponent
ofanexpansionjoint.Thisthinwalled,corrugated
membraneallowsflexibilityinapipingsystemwhile
containingthepressureandmedia.Whencomplete,
eachbellowshasauniqueworkingpressure,springrate,
andcyclelifethatareentirelydependentonitsgeometry
andmaterial.
KEBEJSusessoftwarewritteninhousetodesignbellows
tothelatesteditionoftheEJMAstandards*.TheEJMA
standardensuresthattheexpansionjointisdesigned
andmanufacturedtoasetofminimumrequirements
developedfromempiricaldataandyearsofexperience.
Allcustomersshouldinsistthattheirbellowsbemanu
facturedinaccordancewiththesestandards.
KEBEJSmanufacturesbellowsusinganexpanding
mandrel(punchforming)methodfollowedbyafinish
rolling.Arectangularsheetisshearedandrolledinto
atube.Thetubeisweldedusinganautoflatbed
welderwithnofillermetaladded.Thelongitudinal
seamweldisthenplannishedbackdowntothe
parentmaterialthickness.Anydyepenetrant,xray,
orairtestingisperformedatthistime.Whentesting
iscomplete,theconvolutionsarepunchedindividually
drawingmaterialfromthetopandbottomofthetube.
Thisdrawingprocesseliminatesanythinninginthe
Bellowsmaterial.Atthispoint,theconvolutionshave
moreofaVshapethanthefinalUshapethatis
required.Thisiseasilysolvedwiththefinalrerolling
ofthebellowsbetweenaseriesofaluminizedbronze
rollsAftertrimmingthebellowsattachmentends(skirts),
thebellowsiscompleteandreadytohaveattachment
endsinstalled.

KEBEJShastheabilitytomanufacturemultiplybellowsup
to6plies.Thisisachievedbynestingthintubesinsideeach
otherbeforetheinitialpunchstageofmanufacture.Multiply
bellowshavethedistinctadvantageofcontainingthesame
pressureasanequivalentlythicksingleplydesignbutwith
muchlighterspringratesandmuchhighercyclelife.For
example,ahighpressuremightrequirea0.060thick
bellowstocontainhoopstress.Asingleplyof0.060
thickorthreepliesof0.020thickmaterialwillboth
handlethehoopstressinthebellows,buteachply
inthemultiplybellowswillactindividuallywhere
sidewallbendingisconcerned.Thisdropsthe
springrateandsignificantlyincreasescyclelife.
Sometimesreferredtoasatwoplytestablebellows,
redundantplydesignsareusedwhenitisnecessaryto
monitortheintegrityofthebellowsinnerorouterply.
Nottobeconfusedwiththemultiplydesign,bothbellows
pliesaredesignedforthefullpressureandtemperature
cycles.Ifoneplyfails,thesecondonewilltakeitsplace
untilascheduledrepaircanbemade.Thefirststyle,
referredtoaspassive,onlymonitorsthepressurebetween
thebellowsplies.Iftheinnerplyisbreached,thenthe
incidentisdetectedasanincreaseinpressureonthemeasuring
device.Pressuregaugesandpressuretransducersarethe
mostcommontypesofmeasuringdevices.Thesecondstyle,
referredtoasactive,requiresavacuumbetweentheplies.
Dependingonthepressurereading,aninnerorouterplyfailure
canbedetected.
Therearefourbasicmovementsthatcanbeappliedtoabellows.TheseareAxial,Lateral,AngularandTorsional.Figures1
through5illustratethesemovements.Bellowsbehavelikespringsinapipingsystem.Whentheyarecompressed,thebellows
resistthemovementthesameasaspringwould.Thespringrateofabellowsisentirelydependantonbellowsgeometryand
materialproperties.KEBEJSisabletovarybellowsgeometrysuchasconvolutionheight,pitch,thicknessandnumberofplies
toprovideabellowstosatisfyanycustomersneeds.

bellows.Whenapipingsystemwithoutexpansionjointsispressurized,thesystemwillnotmovebecausethepipeiscounteringthe
forceintension.Whenanunrestrainedexpansionjointisintroducedinthenetwork,theforcetendstopulltheendsawayfromthe

ease,butadequateanchorsandguidesmustbeprovided.
UniversalExpansionJoint
Thisexpansionjointconsistsoftwobellowsconnectedby
acenterspoolpiecewithflangeorpipeends.Theuniversal
arrangementallowsgreateraxial,lateralandangular
movementsthanaSingleBellows.Increasingthecenter
spoollengthproducesincreasedmovementcapability.
Likethesingle,adequateanchorsandguidesmustbe
provided.
ExternallyPressurizedExpansionJoint
Linepressureactsexternallyonthebellowsbymeansofa
Pressurechamber.Thisallowsagreaternumberofconvolutions
tobeusedforlargeaxialmovements,withoutfearofbellows
instability.ExternallyPressurizedExpansionJointshavethe
addedbenefitofselfdrainingconvolutionsifstandingmedia
isaconcern.Anchorsandguidesareanessentialpartofa
goodinstallation.

TheadditionoftierodstoaSingleBellowsAssemblyaddsdesign
flexibilitytoapipingsystem.Thetierodsareattachedtothepipe
orflangewithlugsthatcarrythepressurethrustofthesystem,
eliminatingtheneedformainanchors.Withtheassemblytied,
theabilitytoabsorbaxialgrowthislost.Onlylateralandangular
movementcanbeabsorbedwiththetiedexpansionjoint.The
additionoftierodsdoesnoteliminatetheneedforawellplanned
guidesystemfortheadjacentpiping.
TiedUniversalExpansionJoint
SimilarinconstructiontoaUniversalAssemblyexceptthattierods
absorbpressurethrustandlimitmovementstolateraloffsetand
angulation.LargeoffsetmovementsarepossibleinaUniversal
Assemblybyincreasingthedistancebetweenthetwobellows.
WhenaHingedExpansionJointisused,movementislimitedto
Angulationinoneplane.HingedAssembliesarenormallyusedin
setsoftwoorthreetoabsorblargeamountsofexpansioninhigh
pressurepipingsystems.Onlylowspringforcesaretransmittedto
theequipment.Thehingehardwareisdesignedtocarrythepressure
thrustofthesystem,andoftentimes,usedtocombattorsional
movementinapipingsystem.SlottedHingedExpansionJointsare
avariantofthestandardHingedExpansionJointsthatallowaxial
andangularmovement.Importantnote:OnceaSlottedHingeis
introduced,torsioninthepipingsystemisstillresistedbutthe

GimbalExpansionJoint
Thegimbalrestraintisdesignedtoabsorbsystempressurethrust
Andtorsionaltwistwhileallowingangulationinanyplane.Gimbal

ExpansionjointsusedinFCCUservicearesomeofthemost
criticalandcomplexexpansionjointsmanufactured.Fluid
CatalyticCrackingUnits(FCCU)orCatCrackers,operateat
veryhighpressuresandtemperatures,consequentlyresulting
inlargethermaloffsetsfortheinstalledexpansionjoint.
Furthermore,theintroductionofabrasivemedia(catalyst)
requiresadditionalprotectiontoavoidgradualdeterioration
andprematurefailureoftheexpansionjoint.
Thebellowsmembraneisthemostcriticalelementofthe
expansionjointassembly.Itsrelativelythinwallconstruction

Although there are no fabric that are 100% gas tight,
fabricsealsgivemoreflexibilityinthelateralmovement
modethantheirmetalcounterpartsandyoucanexpect
alifespanofupto7years.Nevertheless,fabricsealsare
easy to replace without utilizing specialized installation
technicians.
Ifareplacementsealisrequired,aclamshellbellowsor
ourpenetrationslidersealsmaybetheidealsolutionto
keep your plant running efficiently. Clamshell bellows
seals can be installed directly over your installed seals
forquickandeasyreplacement.PSSealsorsliderseals
can significantly lower energy loss, while reducing the
maintenance load and risk of an unplanned outage.
Thesesealsmaybedisassembledandrepairedwithout
cutting metal piping or welds; there is no need for
speciallytrainedwelderstoinstallthereplacements.
Thesesealscanbecompletelyinsulatedwhichensuresthe
least amount of heat loss at the point of penetration as
well as helping to cool the casing area around it. Because
PenSeal Plus is a true expansion joint, it is designed to
accept axial, lateral and angular movements therefore,

SilencerBellowsSeals(SBS)areintegrateddirectlywiththe
silencerandbecausetheyarepartofthesilenceritself,the
resulting pressure they are exposed to is very low.
Although the inlet line pressure can exceed 1000 PSIG,
silencer internal pressures are normally maintained
between 1 PSIG and 15 PSIG. These seals will
accommodate 1" axial extension and 2" of lateral
movementthataregenerallylargeenoughforequipment
andpipingthermalgrowth.
