Genesis Chapter Two

1So the creation of the heavens and earth and

everything in them was completed. 2On the seventh
day God had finished his work of creation, so he
rested from all his work. 3And God blessed the
seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the
day when he rested from all his work of creation.

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made the

heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them;
but on the seventh day He rested. That is why the
LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as
holy.

Exodus 31:17 “It is a permanent sign of my covenant

with the people of Israel. For in six days the LORD
made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day he
stopped working and was refreshed.”

Did God physically need rest or refreshment? Does

God get tired?
No. God provided the day of rest for us. He provided
a day for us to worship Him and to rest.

I have a challenge for you…..Turn Sunday back into

the day of rest. No working, no cooking, no laundry,
no shopping, no going out to eat, no Starbucks. This
would include anything that would encourage anyone
else to work. Take the Sabbath day back, a day
dedicated to God and rest.

4This is the account of the creation of the heavens

and the earth. When the LORD God made the earth
and the heavens, 5neither wild plants nor grains were
growing on the earth. The LORD God had not yet
sent rain to water the earth, and there were no
people to cultivate the soil. 6Instead, springs came
up from the ground and watered all the land.

Verse 6 tells us that God didn’t need us to take care

of the earth; He was fully capable of taking care of
the earth Himself. God wanted us, flaws and all.

7Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust
of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the
man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.

Job 33:4 For the Spirit of God has made me,

And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

John 20:19-22 19That Sunday evening the disciples

were meeting behind locked doors because they
were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly Jesus
was standing among them! “Peace be with you,” he
said. 20As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in
his hands and his side. They were filled with joy
when they saw the Lord! 21Again he said, “Peace be
with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending
you.” 22Then he breathed on them and said,
“Receive the Holy Spirit.”

WOW!!! Did you get chills? I did. The concordance

only referred to verse 22, but I wanted to get the
context it was in. The Holy Spirit is God’s breath.
Everybody including the disciples was not alive until
they received the Holy Spirit. God is still giving the
breath of life.
Do you remember how it felt when you accepted
Christ into your heart?

8Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden in the

east, and there he placed the man he had made.
9The LORD God made all sorts of trees grow up from

the ground-trees that were beautiful and that

produced delicious fruit. In the middle of the garden
he placed the tree of life and the tree of knowledge
of good and evil.

If there was any question as to whether or not God

created this for us, these verses confirm that He did.

Something else occurs to me….The two trees in the

middle of the garden. The tree of life is the first
representation of Jesus and the tree of knowledge of
good and evil is the representation of the world.
Choose the tree of life, Jesus, you get eternal life.
Choose the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the
world, and you’re choosing death.

A river flowed from the land of Eden, watering the

10

garden and then dividing into four branches.

Revelation 22:1, 17 1Then the angel showed me a

river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing
from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

17The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone

who hears this say, “Come.” Let anyone who is
thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely
from the water of life.
So this river represents the water of life. If you read
on to Rev. 22:2 it goes on to talk about the tree of life
on either side of the river.

11The first branch, called the Pishon, flowed around

the entire land of Havilah, where gold is found. 12The
gold of that land is exceptionally pure; aromatic resin
and onyx stone are also found there. 13The second
branch, called the Gihon, flowed around the entire
land of Cush. 14The third branch, called the Tigris,
flowed east of the land of Asshur. The fourth branch
is called the Euphrates.

I’ve mulled over these verses for a few days. I know

all scripture is God breathed and this was put here
for a reason. I’m just not getting anything.

15The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of

Eden to tend and watch over it. 16But the LORD God
warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every
tree in the garden—17except the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you
are sure to die.

Again God gave what he created to man to take care

of. He could eat the fruit from any tree, just not one.

Deuteronomy 30:15 “Now listen! Today I am giving

you a choice between life and death, between
prosperity and disaster.

Deuteronomy 30:19-20 19“Today I have given you the

choice between life and death, between blessings
and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to
witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would
choose life, so that you and your descendants might
live! 20You can make this choice by loving the LORD
your God, obeying him, and committing yourself
firmly to him. This is the key to your life. And if you
love and obey the LORD, you will live long in the land
the LORD swore to give your ancestors Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob.”

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the

free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our
Lord.

James 1:14-15 14Temptation comes from our own

desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15These
desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is
allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

I wonder if Adam fully comprehended what it was to

die.

18Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man
to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for
him.

Proverbs 18:22 The man who finds a wife finds a

treasure,
And he receives favor from the LORD.

This is the first hint of marriage in the Bible. God did

not want man to be alone. God doesn’t want us to
be lonely. It’s easier to be held accountable for your
actions when you are not alone.
19So the LORD God formed from the ground all the
wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought
them to the man to see what he would call them, and
the can chose a name for each one. 20He gave
names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky,
and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper
just right for him.

In the first chapter we saw God giving names to what

he created, therefore showing ownership. Now we
have man giving names to what God created for us.
This is one of the ways we were created in God’s own
image. By naming the animals, God was allowing
man to reign over what He had created. What a
tremendous responsibility. And then we have parents
wanting to name children silly names. We need to
remember that the ability to name someone or
something comes from God and we need to take that
responsibility seriously.

21So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep
sleep. While the man slept, the LORD God took out
one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening.
22Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib,

and he brought her to the man.

No wonder a man can sleep through anything!

”At last!” the man exclaimed.

23

“This one is bone from my bone,

And flesh from my flesh!
She will be called ‘woman,’
Because she was taken from ‘man.’”

Ephesians 5:28-30 28In the same way, husbands

ought to love their wives as they love their own
bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows
love for himself. 29No one hates his own body but
feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the
church. 30And we are members of his body.

24This explains why a man leaves his father and

mother and is joined to his wife, ant the two are
united into one.
25Now the man and his wife were both naked, but

they felt no shame.

To be able to enjoy that kind of innocence would be

wonderful. No wonder Jesus said that we should
have the faith of little children. Too bad we become
jaded by this world.
