WORK SHEET OF CHAPTER 2: ATOMIC NUMBER, MASS NUMBER, ISOTOPES, ISOBAR, ISOTONE, AND ATOMIC MASS

Purposes: After finishing activities students are expected to be able to 1. write representation of atoms with their atomic and mass numbers. 2. calculate number of proton, electron, and neutron in an atom. 3. determine the number of proton, electron, and neutron of some isotopes. 4. differentiate between isotope, isobar, and isotone. 5. calculate atomic mass of the element based on its isotopes abundances and masses.

1.1 Simple view of an atom The simple view of the atom is that it consists of a tiny nucleus (with diameter of about13 cm) 10 and electrons that move about the nucleus at an average distance of 8 cm. 10 Exercise 1: a. Is atom a neutral object? b. What is the charge of electron? c. What is the charge of nucleus? d. Give the picture of the atom? Answer to exercise 1:

1.2 Representation of an atom The general representation of an atom is given bellow.
