REDD Project DeveloPment

An environmental services firm that has proven experience developing REDD projects under the voluntary markets in Indonesia.

Forest carbon conducts field biomass survey to estimate carbon stocks in project location.

Forest Carbon is an Indonesian-based firm that addresses the need for a regionally focused team capable of providing technical services for carbon forestry projects in tropical rainforest countries. Our team of experts work directly with clients on all aspects of project development, including the following: carbon baseline measurement, project design, implementation, and the monitoring, reporting and validation of carbon forestry projects for the emerging voluntary and compliance carbon markets. Forest Carbon has a proven track record advising major international environmental organizations and private project developers on REDD projects in Indonesia.

Project Development Process 1. Conduct Feasibility Study: Assess additionality, leakage, and permanence. Develop preliminary estimates of Green House Gases (GHG) baseline emissions and potential revenue flows. 2. Define Project Boundaries. 3. Estimate Carbon Stocks: Conduct field or aerial biomass surveys. 4. Calculate Baseline GHG emissions: Apply computer modeling to predict future deforestation and emission rates. 5. Develop monitoring plan for assessing degradation and deforestation.

Forest Carbon is an Indonesian-based environmental consulting firm that provides technical services to REDD project developers and stakeholders. Its team of experts has extensive experience in Southeast Asia and Africa in forestry, GIS/remote sensing, and environmental policy. Its office is located in Jakarta.

The conservation of threatened natural forests, the reforestation of degraded forests and restoration of tropical peatlands can play a significant role in mitigating climate change.

Forest Carbon has advised private project developers and conservation organizations on the development of pioneering REDD Projects in Indonesia giving it unprecedented insight into the process of developing a project from start to finish.

Advising the Zoological Society of London Through the Berbak Carbon Initiative (BCI), the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) seeks to enhance the protection and management of large tracts of Sumatran Tiger habitat. ZSL aims to achieve this by generating carbon credits to avoid degradation and deforestation while mitigating emissions from peat destruction. Forest Carbon has been advising on next steps and providing technical support for ZSL on the early development stages of the BCI since mid-2009. To date, Forest Carbon has undertaken preliminary field work and completed a project feasibility study, established a GHG emission baseline, modeled future deforestation with IDRISI Land Change Modeler, and assessed future climatic benefits of the project. Infinite Earths Rimba Raya Project Forest Carbon is providing technical assistance to InfiniteEarth (IE) and its partners on the establishment of the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project under the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS). Forest Carbon has worked with IE on all aspects of developing this large-scale REDD project since 2008. It has conducted a full carbon stock assessment encompassing aerial photography, ground surveys, and satellite imagery analysis. Forest Carbons team also trained Orangutan Foundation International employees to conduct future ground carbon stock assessments which will be performed as part of the ongoing carbon monitoring of the project area. Forest Carbon has developed the technical sections of the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) Standard Project Design Document and wrote the entire Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) project document. Lastly, Forest Carbon has assisted IE with policy and bureaucratic support at the national and district levels. Carbon Stocks Senior Forest Carbon staff members have more than 20 years of experience in assessing timber volumes and biomass in tropical forests. We are experts at designing statistically robust biomass sampling plans that utilize either ground-based plots or aerial methods. Our aerial method of assessing carbon stocks has been validated by the VCS and offers a much faster and cost effective method for assessing large remote forests. Forest Carbon also has experience in estimating below-ground carbon stocks in peat swamp forests, and has applied scientifically valid methods for sampling peat depth and bulk density.

GHG Baseline Emissions Predicting future emissions from deforestation and degradation of forests can be complicated and depends on the REDD project type. Historical emission rates can be misleading at times in terms of modelling future emissions. Therefore, extensive knowledge of the area is essential in predicting future rates. Forest Carbon specialists have been working in Indonesia for more than 12 years. Additionally, our specialists are trained in the leading software models that predict the extent of deforestation based on real threats.
