Formal Proposal

Title of magazine I have chosen to name my magazine Just POP! , as I feel its short and catchy. I wanted to make the title short as I feel this is more simplistic and more appropriate for my older teenager audience. By using many words in the title can appear too young. By using Just POP! it connotes to my target audience that the magazine is new, fresh but also centered on the pop genre. I have used the word pop in the title itself, as I have noticed that many pop magazines do this, and I want to follow the same conventions, for example; Top of the Pops or We Love Pop. I have chosen to capitalize the POP and add an exclamation mark so the audience can notice the title. It also connotes the magazine being loud and big which is what I aim my magazine to be like. Choice of genre I have chosen pop as my genre, as I already have lots of background knowledge within the genre, and it is also my personal interest in music. I listen to pop music regularly and therefore know which artists and style would be appropriate for my magazine. This is since I have always been influenced by hip hop, as it reflects my personality and style. Also my background research has showed that the pop genre has a very wide range of audiences as within the genre, falls many sub-genres. This means lots of readers outside my aimed target audience would still buy my magazine, leading it to be successful. Target audience The typical target audience for a pop magazine would be young girls ages between 11-14 years old. However I am choosing to challenge this convention by aiming the magazine at females ages 15-18 years old. I used to buy many pop magazines such as We Love pop but as I got older, I felt the language was too childish and young. I also found that there are no pop magazines around suitable for my age range, which is why I aiming my magazine for the mid-teens, rather than the conventional 11-14 year olds. Initial ideas for Front Cover For my front cover, I am planning to use a medium close up of a female artist as from my research I found that most music magazines use this type of shot on the cover. The main image itself will be of a famous, female smiling and dressed in a fashionable, iconic way. This is to attract the audience and make them aspire to be like her. The house-style will consist of many bright, vibrant colours like pink and yellow, as they are eye-catching. I will be using this because; from my questionnaire results I found that the audience would like to see bright colours on the cover page. The masthead will also be bright, big and bold in order to attract the audience from a far. I plan to also use sans-serif fonts throughout the page. The coverlines on the page will relate to music, charts, fashion and beauty. Initial ideas For My Contents page For my contents page, I will place my masthead in the top left hand corner of the page as I have noticed most magazines use this convention. Contents will be written in the same font, but in a bright colour to ensure it stands out on the page. The page will be spilt up into rule of thirds, and I plan to write the contents in sections down 2 columns on the page. I will be using a medium long shot as my main image with a pull quote in big sans-serif font. The contents itself, will be of music/charts, fashion and beauty, celebrity and every week. This is because these topics were the most popular from my questionnaire results. From my focus group, I found that the audience wanted more than one image on the contents page to keep them visually engaged which is what I intend to do. Initial ideas for My Double Spread For my double spread, I plan to do an interview with a famous, female artist. This is because my results from my questionnaire and focus group, both said that they wanted an interview to find out more information about

the artist. I plan to use one medium long shot to cover one entire page with the interview on the other. The masthead of the artists name will be in the same bold, font as I used for the masthead and be extremely bright and colorful. This is because my results from my questionnaire showed that the audience would like bright colours used on the double spread so they are more engaged with the interview. I also plan to use pull quotes, by lines and a stand first in order to follow the conventions of a double spread. Initial ideas for Photographs For my front cover, I plan to use a medium close up of a female, famous artist. The image will be of her smiling and dressed in fashionable but feminine clothes. This is to attract the audience by using their intrests in make up and fashion to do this. She will be standing quite dominantly to show the audience her success and power, although in a friendly manner. I also plan to use a close up of a male artist to attract the female audience, and a long shot of a girl which I will link to a fashion related coverline. On the contents page, I will be using a medium long shot of the female artist yet again, as her interview is the most important coverline in the magazine. My results showed me that the audience would like a few pictures on the contents page which is why I will be using a medium close up of a young male, and fashion related images to keep the readers visually entertained. On the double spread, I will be using a medium long shot of the female artist. I plan to have her laughing, and dressed in bright clothing so that the audience feels engaged with her, and that the image stands out on the page. I also plan to use a smaller image of the artist on the interview page so that the readers are visually entertained.
