PISIKAalaman 2011 PISIKAalaman 2011

About PISIKAalaman
In the past, the UP Physics Association conducted the InterUniversity Physics Quiz Bee which aimed to bring out the most brilliant physics students within the university level. The project was doing well, until the need to focus on the secondary level for better physics education and achievement was perceived. This gave way to various academic physics seminars for secondary level students, the first being held back in 2003 entitled Finding Nemo: The Quantum Way. Further expanding from these seminars, PISIKAalaman was initiated in 2004 by then Vice President for External Affairs Michael Andrei Paguio, featuring the academic physics seminars and an interscholastic physics quiz bee for high school students. This allowed the organization to continue to spread information regarding developments in physics and physics education, while encouraging numerous schools to achieve higher standards of physics learning.

A Message from the PISIKAalaman Chairperson

When I was younger, I was fascinated with how everything worked. I looked at how the insects moved; I marveled at the sunsets and the weather; I took apart toys and clocks to see how they were connected. Of course, I wasnt able to answer all my questions about the things I wondered, but that didnt stop me from being curious. This is what sciencein particular, physicsis all about. Every day more and more knowledge about the workings of the universe is being discovered because there are people in the world who did not stop being curious. These people have kept their drive to find the answers to their questions, even if the question seems daunting or impossible. Today, as you go through the seminars and the competition. I invite you to share our curiosity and amazement by seeing the universe through the eyes of a physicist. Being a physicist isnt about solving equations all day or being limited to a single profession; its about looking at everything in a different light, and describing it in the most beautiful language in the worldmathematics. I hope that the PISIKAalaman 2011 will be an enjoyable and inspiring learning experience for you, and that you will come to find the beauty that we see through physics and its range of applications. Be curious and stay driven!

A Message from the UPPA Adviser

Dear Students, Teachers, and all Participants, greetings! It is my honor to wish this exciting day to give your good and lasting impression to your scientific life. Events like PISIKAalaman by the UP Physics Association, through the help of the National Institute of Physics of the College of Science, UP Diliman, aim to foster awareness of the importance and role of Physics in the development of our ordinary curiosity of Nature and consequently efforts towards conservation. PISIKAalaman also tries to point out the significance of the tradition of contests in Physics in raising the level of quality of knowledge in Physics in our students besides the general public, through the help of our mentors -- teachers. Our teachers, for instance, are crucial in maintaining the proper passing on of our knowledge of both what is true, and untrue, about Nature. Meanwhile, the students of today will have to do the same in whatever vocation they may have in the future.

PISIKAalaman 2011

Luntiang Liknayan (Green Physics) as the theme for this year's PISIKAalaman reminds us that our curiosity of Nature must be accompanied by our responsibility to keep Nature in its current best state, if not better than yesterday. We can, and must, use Physics in sustainably harnessing the best of Nature in the service of true Humanity. May your experience in this event result to very positive impact in your academic career. May the same inspire all of you in discovering our answer to scientific riddle: Nature. Let us all thank UPPA and its current officers in putting their efforts in making this event possible. Without their seriousness and zeal in their roles, this even would not even materialize. Congratulations, UPPA! Good job, Officers! Wishing you all the best in PISIKAalaman,

A Message from the This event was brought to you by: UPPA President
Welcome to PISIKAalaman 2011: Luntiang Liknayan!!! PISIKAalaman is on its eighth year today. Through the years, it serves as a way of the UP Physics Association (UPPA) in uplifting Physics to high school students and teachers. I hope that this event has increased your interest and awareness in Physics. Through the Physics problems presented in our quiz bee, your skills in problem solving are tested and developed. The seminars must have given you a different angle in viewing Physics especially in the field of making the world greener. With all of these, I hope that you are enlightened by the fun that Physics can bring. I wish that this has also encouraged you to get a Physics degree in college. On behalf of the UPPA, I would like to thank you for participating in PISIKAalaman 2011. Without you, this event will not be made possible and enjoyable as it would be. Let us move forward and save the earth through Physics!

About UPPA
The UP Physics Association (UPPA) is a non-stock, non-profit students academic and scientific organization officially recognized by the University of the Philippines Diliman Office of Student Activities, by the UP Diliman College of Science Office of Student and Public Affairs, and by the National Institute of Physics administration. Founded on 17 December 1980, it is dedicated primarily to the promotion of careers and interests in pure or applied physics, oriented towards the concerns and aspirations of students interested in these fields. It has three general objectives: 1. To promote the common interest and individual development of physics majors and other students interested in this field; 2. To advance the study and awareness of physics in all its aspects among students and the general public; and 3. To cooperate with the UP physics faculty for the improvement of the National Institute of Physics. These objectives are met through a variety of projects and activities conducted by the UPPA such as the university-wide Physics Month and the nationwide PISIKAalaman.

National Institute of Physics

The National Institute of Physics (NIP) is the premier physics school in the Philippines and it aims to extend this title over this region of the Pacific. Established as a national institute in 1983, the NIP is now housed in the National Science Complex at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. NIP offers both undergraduate degrees BS Physics, BS Applied Physics as well as graduate degrees Diploma in Physics, MA Physics, MS Physics, Ph.D. Physics to over 350 students yearly. It also caters to over 1000 non-major students per semester in accomplishing physics course requirements. Moreover, the NIP also co-implements the graduate programs in environmental science and materials science of the College of Science and the College of Engineering, respectively. The National Institute of Physics also boasts of housing six different research laboratories Condensed Matter Physics, Instrumentation Physics, Photonics Research, Plasma Physics, Structure and Dynamics, and Theory Group. Esteemed Scientists, NIP Faculty and students, all work together in these laboratories and discovering innovative ideas for our country.
