Question 4 (30 Points) Question 5 (10 Points) Question 6 (10 Points) Total /115

1) (15 Points) If you add the money of six people, Alice, Barb, Carol, Dean, Eric and Fred the total is $27.58. Alice has twice the money as Dean. The total of Carol, Eric and Fred equals that of Alice. The total sum of Fred and Barb equals $6.75. Carol has $4.50 more than the total of Fred and Alice. If you subtract the total of Barb and Eric from Dean the result is $3.90. How much money does each person have? a) Set up the set of linear equations that results from the information given above that shows the relationships among all the unknowns

b)

Convert the linear equations into matrices of the form Ax = b, and show what the values are of each matrix.

c)

Show (by matrix notation) how you would solve the equations for the unknown values. Give the relationship between the coefficient, variable and solution matrices. Note, you do not have to solve for the values.

ENGR0011/0111 - Fall, 2004 Written - Hour Exam I 5) (10 Points) You wish to use goal seek to find the roots of the following equation:

y = cos2 (0.3x +1)2

You enter the starting guess in cell B3, what formula do you insert into cell C3? formula =

6) (10 Points) You are running a chemistry experiment and collect data on the mass M in solution versus time T. The M and T data is shown in the spreadsheet below. Thinking the relationship is exponential, you create column C by taking the log of the data in column B. The formula in cell C5 is copied into cells C6 through C22. You plot the data in columns A and C, and fit a linear trend line to the data.

The equation of the trend line given by EXCEL is displayed on the graph. Using this data, what is the exponential equation that relates the mass M as a function of time T [ M = f(t)]. Show you work to get credit!

Equation is:
