Open day were you there?

Our recent Product Launch Event attracted over 700 visitors from throughout the region, from as far afield as Aberystwyth, Stockport, Kidderminster and Brecon. The two events, which took place during April at the RVW Pugh Ltd Head Office at Mellington, Churchstoke and Reaseheath College, Cheshire, saw deals signed and sealed on the day for over 200,000 worth of machinery. The main attractions were the MF 5400 Series with the innovative Dyna 4 transmission, the Vicon BioBaler, the Pottinger FARO wagon and Pottinger Alpha motion mower, all new for the 2006 season. We are welcoming two new apprentices Gavin Thompkinson and Richard Sockett in June who will begin the journey to becoming fully-trained MF fitters in the near future. Our workshop facilities are modern, with the latest highspec laptop diagnostic systems, and with 14 service vehicles on the road we are equipped to deal with most eventualities.

Pottinger have announced the new FARO wagon series which has been developed for livestock farmers who typically have tractors between 90 and 120hp.
Pottinger have pioneered the re-introduction of modern wagons in the UK as farmers appreciate the benefits of making their own quality silage with only two men, a middle range tractor and a handler. The FARO provides the opportunity for low power requirement rotor feed, short chop wagons. Silage wagons have a clear advantage when it comes to organisation, manpower requirements, and diesel consumption. The quality of forage produced using silage wagons meets the high demands of the industry. The Agricultural Research Institute of Northern Ireland found that silage wagons... ? Required 80% less manpower than forage harvester production ? Used 50% less fuel as diesel costs are twice as high for a fuel hungry self-propelled forager ? Used 85% less energy - 118kW total power was required for silage trailer production whereas 712kW was required for the forage harvester procedure. ? No compromise in silage quality - in fact using a Pottinger wagon actually produces silage which is nutritionally better for livestock. ? Also, according to the department of Agricultural Research in Sweden found that the cost advantage of using a silage trailer rather than self-propelled forage harvester is about 58%. Pottinger have also announced a new generation of front mowers and mower conditioners featuring a new concept headstock called 'Alpha-motion', suitable for all tractors between 60 and 300hp fitted with any type of front linkage. A lot of silage fields in this country are on sloping fields so the ability of the new headstock to provide far more travel to follow the ground contours is a major benefit. Ideal for undulating and sloping ground.

Using green wrap can prevent forage losses of up to 1 per bale
Research carried out by ADAS at their research centre Nr Aberystwyth has found that wrapping big bale grass silage with green film could help farmers prevent forage losses worth up to 1 per bale. The research commissioned by Volac concluded that bales wrapped in film achieved a more stable and consistent fermentation. Research also discovered that with green wrap, regardless of the number of layers, less spoilage of the bale occurred.

Powerful yet compact...
New MF 5400 Series The latest enhancements to the MF 5400 range include the launch of Massey Fergusons new Dyna 4 transmission. Other new developments on the MF 5400 Series include quieter cabs, new 40 kph Quadlink suspension options, improved power efficiency, superb power to weight ratios plus the launch of the 125 ISO hp MF 5470 means that the MF 5400 range is a powerful solution right across the 75 -125 hp mixed and livestock sector. There is no compromise with the MF 5400. The operator can specify exactly the tractor to precisely meet his farm enterprise needs. Dyna-4 transmission: After starting the tractor there is no further need to use the clutch to change speed or direction with the Dyna-4 transmission. Four speeds in each range can be shifted, under load, with a simple flick of a lever. The four ranges can also be selected, without using the clutch, by simply pressing a button on the console-mounted lever. The unique Power Control lever, mounted on the left-hand side of the dash, is perfect for shuttling backwards and forwards, operators are even able to set the shuttle sensitivity. On Demo... Edward Blockley who farms near Knutsford tried the MF 5455 on demo from RVW Pugh Ltd. He really liked the Dyna 4 transmission when using the feeder wagon. The Dyna 4 allows the tractor to make smooth gear changes, the tractor does not stop whilst the gear is changed meaning that the straw spreads more evenly said Edward. To increase or decrease the flow from the feeder, it is simple to just knock it up or down through the transmission for a smooth change. Overall Edward really liked the tractor but added The only minor problem with the tractor was the fuel tank sticks out slightly beyond the step. Mr Blockley also used the MF 5455 to pull his 2500 gallon slurry tanker which it did with ease, even on boggy ground. The tractor had more power than he expected, and he also liked the benefit of the tractor being compact but also having the power to be an all round machine capable of most jobs around the farm.

Dreaming of the future...

The Beddoes family have been customers of RVW Pugh for well over twenty years, since Robert Pugh began his company as a steel fabricator manufacturing gates and sheds and selling smaller items of agricultural machinery. Ben and Gemma Beddoes have recently set up their own business based at the family farm near Churchstoke, retailling dairy ice cream, maufactured on site. Future of farming... Ben who works on the family farm thought it was time to try something different and to try and secure a future in farming should their son Oliver decide in time that he wanted to carry on the family tradition. Ben thought that if he could make something out of the milk already produced on the farm then he could add value to it - this is where the ice cream idea began and Dairy Dreams was born!

A great range of flavours are

available from the farm shop Fresh, local produce... A farm building previously used to store saw dust, machinery etc was renovated both inside and out. An ice cream production room was built along with a store room and ice cream parlour itself. All our ice cream is made fresh on the farm using fresh milk from our herd of MRI (Meuse Rhine Issel)cows. We also use fresh double cream which is bought locally, all our ingredients are natural where possible and very high quality said Gemma. Variety of flavours...

The ice cream and sorbets are available in a selection of cones and take home cartons in a variety of mouth watering flavours from the ice cream parlour.

Farmer and contractor Wynston Jones has recently taken delivery of a brand new Merlo 40.7. Under current legislation YOU, the Wynston and his wife Jo run a 250 user or owner of the telehandler acre dairy farm and a busy are responsible for ensuring that contracting business near the machine meets the legal Churchstoke, Powys. They safety requirement of a Thorough bought one of the first Merlo sold Examination. by RVW Pugh Ltd almost 10 years ago, which they kept until 2003, replacing it with a 28.7. As the contracting side of the business has expanded Wyn decided that a higher capacity machine was needed and invested in the 40.7 in time for the harvest season. The Merlo is used daily feeding their herd of 150 pedigree high yeilding holsteins on the farm, and will become an integral part of silaging jobs for customers over the summer months. I have trusted Merlos over the years and when it came to the time to change my machine I decided that a higher lifting capacity was required to cope with the contracting side of the business, especially on the silage clamp said Wynston. With the new machine he is able to lift 4 tonnes up to 7 metres with ease. The visibility from the cab is far superior to any other make, the machine is user friendly, and the back up service from RVW Pugh is good which is essential at this time of year added Wynston.

Open day 2006

Our Product Launch Events held during April attracted over 700 visitors from throughout the region, marking the launch of the innovative Dyna-4 transmission on the MF 5400 Series tractors, the first of its kind within the horsepower bracket. Farmers from as far afield as Aberystwyth, Stockport, Kidderminster and Brecon attended the two events, which took place on 20th April at Reaseheath College, Nantwich and on 26th April at the RVW Pugh Ltd Head Office at Mellington, Churchstoke.

Hot off the production line, our demonstrator arrived just days before so it was the first chance for customers to try the new transmission which adds four-step clutchless flexibility, quieter cabs, new 40kph Quadlink suspension options, improved power efficiency, superb power to weight ratios plus the launch of the 125 ISO hp MF 5470 model. The 5400 range is a powerful solution right across the 75-125 hp mixed and livestock sector. See page 8 for our report on Dyna-4.
Product on display... Considerable interest was expressed in the Massey Ferguson groundscare range, a new venture for RVW Pugh Ltd who have recently invested heavily in purchasing an impressive fleet of machines suited to various applications. See page 17 for our great deal on the MF 430 front cut mower - for the professional user, this powerful 33hp machine, complete with collector and other extras is a real deal. Visitors were invited to view a magnificent display of tractors for all farming applications, from the largest 310hp Fendt 930, right down to the MF 1533 35hp machine. Equipment and attachments from leading manufacturers were on display, including Vicon, Pottinger, Chillton, and Yamaha. A selection of demonstration tractors were available for

customers who required a test drive. Fendt tractors were also on show, and people were able to try for themselves the industryleading Fendt Vario transmission. Other manufacturers exhibiting their products included Yamaha, Twose, Vicon, Merlo, McHale, Hi Spec, Chillton, Harry West, Tuffa Tanks, Shellbourne Reynolds and more. Deals signed and sealed... Managing Director of RVW Pugh Ltd, Robert Pugh, said 'we were pleased to see an excellent number of visitors through the doors on each event day, both existing customers and farmers who had heard about our company and were interested to find out a little bit more.'

Fuel costs are the largest cost factor in the life cycle of a tractor and are often the largest single cost for tractor operators. Over 60% of the complete cost of owning and operating a tractor (including the purchase of the machine, servicing and repair costs, depreciation, interest amounts, and miscellaneous costs) goes on fuel. Cost Comaprison...
Fendt research has proven the actual impact that Fendt technology has on cost savings, which has clearly been shown by tests again and again. An example: an 818 Vario has a fuel consumption of 198 g/ kWh. This could equate to as much as 3.2 litre/hr less than another major competitor. In 800 operating hours, this reduces annual fuel consumption by 2,560 litres and in 10 years by 25,600 litres. At a diesel price of 41p per litre that is a savings potential of almost 1,050 per annum (over 10,000 across a 10 year period.) Subtract this savings potential from the initially higher purchase price of a Fendt and you will realise with Fendt, you will come out a winner in overall costs.

STILL NOT CONVINCED?

Hyde Bros run a contracting business near Ludlow and can compare first hand the fuel saving Fendt can offer. Alongside two Fendt 716s, Hyde Bros also operate a fleet of John Deere tractors. Recently Nick Hyde decided to run a fuel comparison test for himself, comparing side-byside a Fendt 716 and a John Deere 6920S muckspreading, in the same field, at the same pace. It was soon apparent that the Fendt was using considerably less fuel. In fact Nick recorded that over a 10 hour period the Fendt had used 20 litres less than the John Deere. The fuel saving over a period of time could be more than the purchase price diffence between a John Deere and a Fendt. They also found the reliability of the Fendt to be far superior than other tractor makes they have had in the past.

FINANCE OPTIONS
Hire Purchase
This is the most common way to finance agricultural machinery. You decide what equipment to buy, negotiate the sale with RVW Pugh and then sign an HP agreement to repay the capital and interest to AGCO Finance. RVW Pughs invoice is settled promptly by AGCO Finance and when the final instalment is paid the equipment belongs to you the farmer. Payments can be tailored to your cash flow. It may be important to consider the best time of year to make repayments.

Contract Hire
You simply pay a hire rental to AGCO Finance, which allows you to use the equipment for the period specified in the contract hire agreement. RVW Pugh Ltd may offer a separate contract to cover regular servicing and maintenance whilst you have it on hire. After the agreed term the equipment will normally be returned to Pughs and your commitment will end. Lower rentals and regular servicing allow you to predict more certainly the equipment running cost.

Finance lease
AGCO Finance buy the equipment from RVW Pugh and then 'hire' it to you the farmer. The finance lease agreement includes a primary period of rental payments (basically repayment of capital and interest like the HP agreement) followed by an annual secondary period rental payable until the equipment is sold. Unlike HP, title to the equipment remains with AGCO Finance until you decide to sell it. The secondary period rental is payable once per year as long as you still have the equipment.

Buildings and Land

Embarking on a new building development project can become very complex. As well as erecting new buildings it may be necessary to install specialist equipment such as grain drying or automatic grain handling systems. Funding such projects is a complex matter and AGCO Finance have considerable experience in funding projects like these and can provide valuable advice on the best way to handle the funding options.

Flexible finance
RVW Pugh Ltd are now able to arrange their own finance via new software provided by AGCO Finance. The advantage is that we are able to offer you greater flexibility and tailor your finance to include payment holidays and fixed payment terms.

Having worked with Massey Ferguson parts for almost 28 years, Medwyn Evans, Parts Manager at RVW Pughs Churchstoke Depot is trusted by many customers and relied upon for his expert knowledge of the MF product range. From the oldest Grey Fergie to the newest MF and Fendt tractors, along with parts for other leading machinery brands, Medwyn is the man for finding you the correct part at a really competitive price. After leaving college, Medwyn joined Shukers, who held the local MF dealership at the time, where he spent 15 years working in the parts department. He then moved on to Willis Bros when they took on the MF franchise for a further 7 years, before joining the team at RVW Pugh Ltd over 5 years ago. Customer service is a top priority for RVW Pugh, and Medwyn spends much of his time negotiation with suppliers to keep prices low and to ensure that customers orders arrive on time.
