Having received their spiritual eyesight and glimpsed the promises of eternity, they echo the words of the blind man to whom Jesus restored sight, who said, One thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. FEBRUARY 2012 1. When we serve our neighbor, we help those who are in need. In the process we may find solutions to our own difficulties. Each day we have the opportunity to give help and servicedoing the right thing at the right time, without delay. 10. When the Savior appeared to the people of the Book of Mormon, He gave us a great example about not waiting to administer relief to those who have lost a sense of happiness and joy. Having taught the people, He saw that they were unable to understand all His words. He invited them to go to their homes and ponder the things that He had said to them. He told them to pray to the Father and prepare themselves to come again on the morrow, when He would return to teach them.3 As He concluded, He looked upon the multitude and saw them weeping, for they longed for Him to stay with them. And he said unto them: Behold, my bowels are filled with compassion towards you. Have ye any that are sick among you? Bring them hither. Have ye any that are lame, or blind, or halt, or maimed, or leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are afflicted in any manner? Bring them hither and I will heal them, for I have compassion upon you; my bowels are filled with mercy.4 And they brought their sick to Him, and He healed them. The multitude bowed down at His feet and worshipped Him and kissed His feet, insomuch that they did bathe his feet with their tears. Then He commanded them that their little children should be brought, and He blessed them one by one.5 That is the model the Savior has given us. His love is for all, but He never loses sight of the one. - Jose L. Alonso, Doing the Right thing, at the Right Time, Without Delay. 11. What is service, and why is it so important in the gospel of Jesus Christ? First, we are commanded to serve one another. The first commandment is to love God. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 2 We demonstrate our love when we help and serve each other. Steven E. Snow 12. President Gordon B. Hinckley has said: No man can be a true Latter-day Saint who is unneighborly, who does not reach out to assist and help others. It is inherent in the very nature of the gospel that we do so. My brothers and sisters, we cannot live unto ourselves. - Latter-day Prophets Speak: Service, Ensign, Sept. 2007, 49. 13. This service is to be given unselfishly, with no thought of personal gain or reward. It is to be given as needed, not when convenient. Opportunities to serve may not always seem obvious, as it is human nature to worry about our own wants and needs. We must resist such tendencies and look for opportunities to serve. When we visit with those who are suffering from sickness, loss of loved ones, or other heartbreak, it is not enough to simply say, Call if there is anything I can do. Rather, look for ways to bless the lives of others through seemingly simple acts of service. It is better to do even things of little consequence than to do nothing at all. Steven E. Snow 14. President Spencer W. Kimball, a great example of service, said: God does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another mortal that he meets our needs. Therefore, it is vital that we serve each other in the kingdom.

15. Service requires unselfishness, sharing, and giving. My wife and I learned a valuable lesson during our time of service in Africa. We were assigned to a district conference in Jinja, Uganda. Early Saturday morning before our meetings began, we took the opportunity to tour a new chapel in the area. As we arrived at the building, we were greeted by a young boy of three to four years of age. He had come to the Church grounds to see what was going on. Struck by his broad smile, Sister Snow reached in her purse and handed him a wrapped piece of hard butterscotch candy. He was delighted. We spent a few minutes touring the chapel before returning outside. We were met by more than a dozen smiling children, who each wanted to meet the new neighborhood candy lady. Phyllis was heartbroken, as she had given the boy her last piece of candy. She disappointedly gestured to the children there was no more. The small boy who initially greeted us then handed the candy back to Sister Snow, gesturing for her to unwrap it. With a heavy heart, Phyllis did so, fully expecting the boy to pop the butterscotch candy into his mouth in full view of his envious friends. Instead, to our great surprise, he went to each of his friends, who stuck out their tongues and received one delicious lick of the butterscotch candy. The young boy continued around the circle, occasionally taking his own lick, until the candy was gone. Now, one can argue the lack of sanitation with this gesture of sharing, but no one can dispute the example set by this young boy. Unselfishness, sharing, and giving are essential to service. This child learned that lesson well. Steven E. Snow SERVICE 16. By small and simple things are great things brought to pass. And by very small means the Lord bringeth about the salvation of many souls (Alma 37:67). 17. First, charity begins at home. The single most important principle that should govern every home is to practice the Golden Rulethe Lords admonition that all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them (Matthew 7:12). M. Russell Ballard, Finding Joy Through Loving Service 18. Because I have Been Given Much I Too Must Give, Hymn 219 (Verse 1) 19. My good friend Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin talked of the power of this principle when he said: Kindness is the essence of greatness. [It] is a passport that opens doors and fashions friends. It softens hearts and molds relationships that can last lifetimes (The Virtue of Kindness,Liahona and Ensign, May 2005, 26). - M. Russell Ballard, Finding Joy Through Loving Service 20. Because I have Been Given Much I Too Must Give, Hymn 219 (Verse 2) 21. In all of our service, we need to be sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. The still, small voice will let us know who needs our help and what we can do to help them. - M. Russell Ballard, Finding Joy Through Loving Service 22. Because I have Been Given Much I Too Must Give, Hymn 219 (Verse 3) 23. But acharity is the pure blove of Christ, and it endurethcforever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him. Moroni 7:47

From this gift [charity] springs our capacity to love and to serve others as the Savior did. The prophet Mormon taught us the supreme importance of this gift and told us how we can receive it: Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure (Moroni 7:48). M. Russell Ballard, Finding Joy Through Loving Service 24. Great things are wrought through simple and small things. Like the small flecks of gold that accumulate over time into a large treasure, our small and simple acts of kindness and service will accumulate into a life filled with love for Heavenly Father, devotion to the work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and a sense of peace and joy each time we reach out to one another. - M. Russell Ballard, Finding Joy Through Loving Service 25. Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one anothers feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you (John 13:13 15). 26. Service makes us strong in our faith and useful in His kingdom. Servicegives us purpose and courage in life. It brings us closer to God and helps us refine our divine nature. It teaches us to love and understand our fellowmen, and it helps us forget about our personal desires, eliminating selfishness, pride, and ingratitude. It teaches us to think of the needs of others, which allows us to develop the virtues that the Savior possesses. ELDER CARLOS H. AMADO, Service: A Divine Quality 27. Those who serve will strive to ennoble, build, and lift their fellowmen; therefore, they will find the good in others, and they will not find reason or have time to become offended. They develop the virtue of praying for those who criticize. They dont expect recognition or reward. They possess the love of Christ. - ELDER CARLOS H. AMADO, Service: A Divine Quality 28. Those who serve will always be willing to share what they possess and what they know at all times, in all places, and with all people. ELDER CARLOS H. AMADO, Service: A Divine Quality

MARCH 2012 1. Those who serve even in adversity will maintain a living hope of a better future. They will continue to be firm in the midst of a crisis because their hope is in Christ. - ELDER CARLOS H. AMADO, Service: A Divine Quality 2. Those who serve with devotion, even when things dont turn out the way they would like, are not easily discouraged, fatigued, or frustrated because the promise

of peace of mind and the companionship of the Holy Spirit will never abandon them. - ELDER CARLOS H. AMADO, Service: A Divine Quality To all who go forth in His service, He provides this assurance: I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up. (D&C 84:88.) Thomas S. Monson The Service That Counts Service is an imperative for those who worship Jesus Christ. To followers who were vying for prominent positions in his kingdom, the Savior taught, Whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant. (Matt. 20:27.) On a later occasion, he spoke of ministering to the needs of the hungry, the naked, the sick, and the imprisoned. He concluded that teaching with these words: Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (Matt. 25:40.) Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? In latter-day revelation the Lord has commanded that we succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees. (D&C 81:5.) Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? In another section of the Doctrine and Covenants, he instructed us to be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of [our] own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness. (D&C 58:27.) Holders of the Melchizedek Priesthood receive it upon a covenant to use its powers in the service of others. Indeed, service is a covenant obligation of all members of the Church of Jesus Christ. - Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve?

7. 16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, aFeed my sheep. 17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him,aFeed my bsheep. John 21:16-17 8. When we think of service, we usually think of the acts of our hands. But the scriptures teach that the Lord looks to our thoughts as well as to our acts. One of Gods earliest commandments to Israel was that they should love him and serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deut. 11:13.) When the prophet Samuel was sent to Bethlehem to choose and anoint one of the sons of Jesse as a new king for Israel, the Lord told him to reject the first son, though he was a man of fine appearance. The Lord explained, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. (1 Sam. 16:7.) - Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? 9. We are familiar with the proverb which states that as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. (Prov. 23:7.) We also read in Proverbs: All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits. (Prov. 16:2.)

Latter-day revelation declares that the Lord requires not only the acts of the children of men, but the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind. (D&C 64:34.) - Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? 10. Numerous scriptures teach that our Heavenly Father knows our thoughts and the intents of our heart. (See D&C 6:16; Mosiah 24:12; Alma 18:32.) The prophet Moroni taught that if our works are to be credited for good, they must be done for the right reasons. If a man offereth a gift, or prayeth unto God, except he shall do it with real intent it profiteth him nothing. For behold, it is not counted unto him for righteousness. (Moro. 7:67.) These scriptures make clear that in order to purify our service in the Church and to our fellowmen, it is necessary to consider not only how we serve, but also why we serve. - Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? 11. I would that ye should do alms unto the poor, the Savior declared, but take heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father who is in heaven. (3 Ne. 13:1; see also Matt. 6:12.) The Savior continued: Therefore, when ye shall do your alms do not sound a trumpet before you, as will hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward. In contrast, those who serve quietly, even in secret, qualify for the Saviors promise that thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. (3 Ne. 13:18; see also Matt. 6:4.) (3 Ne. 13:2; see also Matt. 6:2.) - Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? 12. Whos on The Lords Side, Hymn 260 (Verse 1) 13. Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you. ~Mother Teresa 14. Whos on The Lords Side, Hymn 260 (Verse 2) 15. The willingness to share does not make one charitable; it makes one free. ~Robert Brault 16. Whos on The Lords Side, Hymn 260 (Verse 3) 17. The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit. ~Nelson Henderson 18. Whos on The Lords Side, Hymn 260 (Verse 4) 19. Charity sees the need, not the cause. ~German Proverb 20. But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. (2 Cor. 9:67.) 21. It is obeying God willingly that is accepted, an anonymous writer has said. The Lord hates that which is forcedit is rather a tax than an offering. - - Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? 22. Charity is the pure love of Christ. (Moro. 7:47.) The Book of Mormon teaches us that this virtue is the greatest of all. (Moro. 7:46.) The Apostle Paul affirmed and illustrated that truth in his great teaching about the reasons for service:

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. (1 Cor. 13:13.) We know from these inspired words that even the most extreme acts ofservicesuch as giving all of our goods to feed the poorprofit us nothing unless our service is motivated by the pure love of Christ. - Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? 23. Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day. (D&C 4:2.) 24. We learn from this command that it is not enough to serve God with all of our might and strength. He who looks into our hearts and knows our minds demands more than this. In order to stand blameless before God at the last day, we must also serve him with all our heart and mind. Service with all of our heart and mind is a high challenge for all of us. Such service must be free of selfish ambition. It must be motivated only by the pure love of Christ. Dallin H. Oaks Why Do We Serve? 25. The difference between a helping hand and an outstretched palm is a twist of the wrist. ~Laurence Leamer, King of the Night 26. In about the same degree as you are helpful, you will be happy. ~Karl Reiland 27. How far that little candle throws his beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world. ~William Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice, much later adapted to "So shines a good deed in a weary world" by David Seltzer for the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory 28. If we could all hear one another's prayers, God might be relieved of some of his burdens. ~Ashleigh Brilliant 29. Dare to reach out your hand into the darkness, to pull another hand into the light. ~Norman B. Rice 30. The Master said, He that is greatest among you shall be your servant. (Matt. 23:11.) 31. It has been wisely said, Service is the rent we pay for our own room on earth. We should know that the rent is due on a daily basis and know that the receipt is never stamped paid in full, because the rent, service in Gods kingdom, is again due today and due tomorrow. Russell C Taylor, The Joy of Service

APRIL 2012 1. But ye will teach them to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another. (Mosiah 4:15.) King Benjamin, counsel to parents about teaching their children, The Book of Mormon 2. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, feet that were hot, sweaty, and soiled with dust and dirt. He washed not their hands or face; he washed their feet. He who is the greatest shall be the leasthe it is who learns to serve. (See D&C 50:26.) Russell C Taylor, The Joy of Service

3. Service changes people. It refines, purifies, gives a finer perspective, and brings out the best in each one of us. It gets us looking outward instead of inward. It prompts us to consider others needs ahead of our own. Righteous service is the expression of true charity, such as the Savior showed. DEREK A. CUTHBERT, The spirituality of Service 4. First, service helps us establish true values and priorities by distinguishing between the worth of material things that pass, and those things of lasting, even eternal, value. Our beloved prophet counsels: If you would find yourself, learn to deny yourself for the blessing of others. Forget yourself and find someone who needs your service, and you will discover the secret to the happy, fulfilled life. (Ezra Taft Benson, Ensign,May 1979, p. 34.) DEREK A. CUTHBERT, The spirituality of Service 5. Second, service helps us establish a righteous tradition. This is so necessary, particularly among young people. Wise parents will provideservice opportunities in the home for their children from an early age. Growing up with this tradition will blossom into community service and Church service. It will develop a spirit of volunteerism in a world where people more often ask, Whats in it for me? The Lord has counseled: For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness. (D&C 58:2627.) DEREK A. CUTHBERT, The spirituality of Service 6. Third, service helps us overcome selfishness and sin. Have you ever realized that all sin is selfish, whether it be lying, cheating, stealing, immorality, covetousness, or idleness? Sin is for ones own ends, not anotherscertainly not for the Lords ends. Service, on the other hand, is unselfish and constitutes a positive power for good. DEREK A. CUTHBERT, The spirituality of Service 7. service helps us generate love and appreciation. We come to know people by serving themtheir circumstances, their challenges, their hopes and aspirations. DEREK A. CUTHBERT, The spirituality of Service 8. service is the principal way of showing gratitude to the Savior. We need to fill ourselves up with gratitude for His redeeming love, His infinite atoning sacrifice, His obedience to the will of the Father. As we become full of gratitude, it overflows into service, and inasmuch as [we] have done it unto one of the least of these [his] brethren, [we] have done it unto [Him]. (Matt. 25:40.) DEREK A. CUTHBERT, The spirituality of Service 9. Tenth, service helps us to get to know the Savior, for how knoweth a man the master whom he has not served? (Mosiah 5:13.) As we immerse ourselves in the service of others, we find our spiritual selves and come unto Him. I was impressed while visiting the California Sacramento Mission a few months ago to meet a young, blind missionary elder. He had completely immersed himself in missionary service, despite his special needs, and his spirit shone through. DEREK A. CUTHBERT, The spirituality of Service 10. Let Us Oft Speak Kind Words to Each Other, Hymns 232 11. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 12. Seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

13. Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 14. Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. 15. Charity never faileth.2 16. President Harold B. Lee said that one night he had what must have been a vision, in which he was told: If you want to love God, you have to learn to love and serve the people. That is the way to show your love for God (Stand Ye in Holy Places [1974], 189). 17. We have covenanted to serve those who are in need, just as Christ served His fellowmen. Christlike service may not be requested. It may be needed by someone who is a stranger to us who can never repay us. It may be unpleasant and require much effort on our part. It may be needed at a time when it is difficult for us to give. We may receive no praise or recognition. But we serve because we love our Heavenly Fathers children and want to help them out of the pure desire of our hearts. Latter-day Saint Women Manual 18. I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again. ~William Penn 19. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. ~Winston Churchill 20. God has not called us to see through each other, but to see each other through. ~Author Unknown 21.
