The effectiveness of fresh pumpkin seed as an anti-helminth for school age children CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION The colon is an important organ of our body. It is responsible for absorbing water and other nutrients from food which has been already digested and to excrete the waste material from the body, in the form of stool. But there are various parasites which infest the intestine and the colon to cause chronic infections. Common parasites are tapeworms, roundworms and flukes which infest the body through infected food and water. Parasites infest our body mainly through contaminated food and water. We may also get infected through other ways such as walking barefoot on the grass or through some insect bite. Parasites harm our body in different ways:

Destroy body cells. Produce toxins. Cause inflammation to the tissues. Damage the intestinal lining and may cause obstructions to the intestine. So it is essential to get rid of parasites from our body. There are various ways to do colon cleansing to get rid of parasites. It is not a quick, one time process. It is a long process which may go on for months. The parasites present in your digestive tract multiply very fast and they won't go away easily. A single parasite may lay 10,000 eggs at a time. So unless you take up a long term approach, the treatment will not be successful.

The most effective method of colon cleansing to get rid of parasites is to use various herbs. There are certain herbs that possess anti-helminthic properties.

Unlike chemical medicines, these herbs may be used to cleanse the colon without any side effects. Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne) is one of those effective herbs to be used in eliminating helminthes (intestinal parasites) in our digestive tract. All we know that wide variety of pumpkin can be found in our country and is being sold for very affordable price in the market nationwide that suites for everyones budget. Pepitas or pumpkin seed has been used in traditional medicine as an anthelmintic (an agent used to expel intestinal worms), taeniacide (an agent which kills tapeworms) and as a diuretic (Bombardelli and Morazzoni, 1997). In Chinese Medicine, pumpkin seeds are considered to have a sweet and bitter taste, and so influence the Large Intestines and Stomach. Research has shown that both a decoction (strong tea) and powders of pumpkin seeds have been effective against tapeworm and other parasites in animals. Pumpkin Seeds contain iron, B-vitamins and trace minerals and is used medicinally to help improve bowel function by ridding the intestinal tract of parasites and worms. Pumpkin is also a fine natural source of magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, as well as vitamins A and C.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Squash is an interesting vegetable. Squash, botanically known as Cucurbita maxima, is commonly grown in the Philippines throughout the year. It is usually grown in home gardens and in commercial scale for its immature fruits, young shoots, flowers, and seeds. Fruit surfaces or contours may be scalloped, smooth, ridged or warty. The fruits develop very rapidly and must be harvested a few days after they form (before the seeds and rinds harden) and soon after harvest. Like other cucurbits, squash is recognized as an important source of vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B which is found in the vegetables, Calcium, Phosphorus and Iron which is found in shoot and flowers of the Squash, the fruit also contains calcium and Vitamin A. the seeds that can be found in the squash has fixed oil approximately 20 to 25%; a proteid, edestin. The seed's active principle is a peporesin found in the cotyledons. The saponin in seeds believed to have antihelminthic effect.

According to World Health Organization 85 percent of the world's population may be infected by a parasites and parasites has 3,200 different varieties of parasites, which can range in size from microscopic to inches, or in some cases, even several feet long. Parasite worms find a perfectly living environment when the bowel becomes ineffective in the elimination of the waste products due to constipation.

PURPOSE STATEMENT This research study aims to the effectiveness of fresh pumpkin seeds as an antihelmenthic among schoolage children.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY IN: In relation to the four fields of Nursing

Nursing Practice This study would provide a big help to render more efficient nursing intervention to the patients (particularly in school aged children) with Intestinal parasites. The use of chewing pumpkin seed as the classic means of eliminating parasites worms from

your intestines and large bowel. And it is a safe and natural anthelmintic (worm expeller). It is safe for both children and adults. It would also provide a low cost but effective regimen to the patients. Nursing Education It contributes to the nursing practice in a way that it gives additional information about the use of pumpkin seeds in the patients (particularly in school aged children) to eliminate Intestinal parasites. With this the nurses could know also incorporate in lectures and discussions in Growth and Development concept. The Nursing Educators will help to deepen the knowledge of the students regarding with this information. It would be a help for the students to apply this information in their clinical field.

Nursing Administration It plays a vital role in broadening the knowledge of the nurses, as well the nursing administrators. They could use this management to school-aged children patients.

Nursing Research This study would provide an additional knowledge within the scope of nursing research. This study proves to have very important information in treating or eliminating Intestinal parasites among school-aged children as well as in the adults. The study is now a part of essential use for the knowledge cache in the

Nursing field and serves as guidelines for future researchers who would have to deal deeper about this topic.

FEASIBILITY OF ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM

Time & Timing

This study needs a 3 month period to fully conduct the research, a week or two to locate and finalize a good area where helminthes infections are prevalent and scouting a trustworthy laboratory, a week to process the consent of the parents and another week to perform the research proper. The remaining months will be the continuation of the study outside the area of the subjects such as submitting the stool for an examination, interpreting the findings and finalizing the data gathered.

Availability of the Study Participants

According to the 2011 World Fact Book of the United States Central Intelligence Agency, the population rate of Filipinos age 0-14 is 35.2% of the total population which consist of 17, 606, 352 males and 16, 911, 376 females; in the Quezon City alone, from their local government 2010 census, the school age population of the Pre-school and Elementary level is 537, 276; and according to the National Statistical Coordination Board of 2010, the School Participation rate of the Elementary level is 88.84% (SY 2007-2008). It shows that there are a large number of subjects that can participate and as well benefit in this study.

Facilities and Equipment The technical equipment needed is a videotape and a camera which will aid

for documentation purposes, few laboratory materials such as gloves, mask, stick applicator and hazard bags to collect stool samples and to also protect the

researchers from contaminating the stools as well as getting any infections that the stool may contain which the researchers can produce on their own. The facility that will be needed is a laboratory that may fully examine the stools for helminthes and other present infections that the subjects may have. Office equipment and other supplies such as papers, pens, computers and internet connection are already produced by the researchers and is available any time they need to use it.
