To honor and celebrate the California
Centennial of the Womens Right to Vote,
the League of Women Voters of Butte
County has secured a traveling Califor-
nia Centennial Exhibit, produced by the
International Museum of Women and the
California History Center Foundation. It is
currently on display at the Paradise branch
library, 5922 Clark.
The League will host a public recep-
tion and program on January 15 begin-
ning at Noon at the Gold Nugget Museum,
502 Pearson Rd. in Paradise. The public
is invited to view the exhibit prior to the
program and enjoy refreshments any time
from 2p.m -3 p.m. The program will begin
at 3 p.m. with speakers and living history
portrayals by Rosemary Quinn, dressed
as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Alberta
Tracy, dressed as Anna Morrison Reed, a
Butte County suffragist. The event is in
partnership with the Paradise branch Li-
brary, Friends of the Library, Gold Nugget
Museum and Friends of the Museum.
After a short break for refreshments,
at 4:30p.m. the Paradise Speaker Series
will welcome guest speaker Eileen Burke-
Trent, a Fellow of the National Ruth S.
Shur Leadership Institute of the League of
Women Voters. In her presentation Dish-
pans and Broomhandles: Rabble-Rousing
Women of the Labor & Womens Move-
ments she shares stories of our less well
behaved sisters, mothers, and grandmoth-
ers of the period.
Calif. Centennial Womens Right to Vote
Program in Paradise, Jan. 15
The Centennial exhibit will remain at
the museum for another week, and then
will be moved to the Gridley Museum at
Kentucky & Hazel for an evening wine
and cheese reception on Jan. 27. In part-
nership with the museum, on February 12
a tea, movie, and discussion will be held
at the Gridley branch library, 299 Spruce
Street.
The exhibit will travel throughout the
county through March, 2012, and will be
at Butte College for a program on February
29, and then to Chico at the Bell Memorial
Union on CSU campus for the remainder
of its time in Butte County. Reception
times in those venues will be announced in
the coming weeks.

ciation of the thousands of women and men
who struggled for womens suffrage since
the mid-1800s. The county coordinator
for this exhibit is Eileen Burke-Trent. To

from 3:30 until 5:30 pm at Hooker Oak
Elementary Schools multi-purpose room
in Chico. The workshop is themed Music
Play With Purpose, and is based on Gills
graduate studies in child development and
his 20 years of experience leading play
programs for families nationwide.
In this energizing session, Jim Gill will
explain the real purpose behind playing to
music. The Music provides a context for
children to develop abilities such as cre-
ativity and self-regulation, which is essen-
tial to school success. Jims clever word
play and rhymes in the context of active
movement games also provide broad op-
portunities for literacy development, and
Library Welcomes Musician Jim Gill
are well known and loved by many.
Librarians and early childhood teach-
ers will leave the session with a repertoire
of music play activities that can be put to
immediate and purposeful use in their pro-
gramming. Best of all, they will leave the
session understanding that play is a teach-
ing tool that inspires agility in thought and
a love of learning in children.
The Hooker Oak Elementary School

The Civil Rights Memorial
In 1989 in Montgomery, Alabama, the Civil Rights Memorial was dedicated. The
memorial is a monument to the civil rights movement and to those who died in that
struggle.
Designed by Maya Y. Lin, the circular black granite table records the events of the
civil rights movement from 1954 through 1968, and bears the names of 40 men, women,
and children who were killed during those years of the cause.
Water emerges from the tables center and ows evenly across the top. On a curved
black granite wall behind the table, water falls down over the engraved words from the
Bible that Dr. King chose for his rst speech during the Montgomery Bus Boycott and
his historic address at the March on Washington in 1963.
In designing the memorial, Ms. Lin said, The Memorial plaza is a contemplative
area a place to remember the civil rights movement, to honor those killed during the
struggle, to appreciate how far the country has come in its quest for equality, and to
consider how far it has to go.
He Had an Early Lesson in Racism
Born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929, the son of a school
teacher and a preacher, few could have predicted how this single indi-
vidual would inuence the course of history in the United States.
He grew up in a middle-class home a few blocks from the Ebenezer
Baptist Church where his father was a pastor and where years later he,
too, would lead the congregation.
He had an early lesson in racism when he entered rst grade. Two of
his playmates as a preschooler, white sons of the neighborhood grocer,
were no longer allowed to play with him, and their mother nally told
young Martin, Were white, and youre colored, and you cant play
together anymore. He ran home in tears.
There were other incidents in his boyhood to teach him the harsh
realities of growing up black in the South, but he managed to grow
up without hating those who treated him with disrespect because of
his race.
He was an above average student, skipping both the ninth and
twelfth grades and passing a college entrance exam which enabled
him to enroll at Morehouse College as a freshman at the age of 15. He
graduated from Morehouse, then Crozer Theological Seminary, and
went on to complete his doctorate at Boston University at the age of 25.
It was during his college years that he began to study the philosophy of Mahatma Ghandi and came to believe in the redemptive power of
love to change social ills.
Having married in his 24th year, Dr. King arrived in Montgomery, Alabama a year later and became pastor of the prestigious Dexter Avenue
Baptist Church the same month that the Supreme Court issued its decision outlawing segregation in the public schools.
In Montgomery he became active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and was one of the people
contacted when Rosa Parks was arrested on December 1, 1955 for failing to relinquish her bus seat to a white man.
The rest, of course, is history
A Nobel Peace Prize winner, King asked not to be remembered for his awards but for his character.
Two months before he was killed, he told a congregation in Atlanta that when he died, he wanted only
for somebody to mention that day, that Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to give his life serving others.
Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. Nine years after his death,
he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The citation reads, in part:
Martin Luther King, Jr. was the conscience of his generation. A southerner, a black man, he gazed
on the great wall of segregation and saw that the power of love could bring it down . . . He helped us
overcome our ignorance of one another . . . He made our nation stronger because he made it better . . .
His life informed us, his dreams sustain us yet.

Civil Rights... Living Up to the Ideals
in our Constitutions Bill of Rights
They were at the heart of Thomas Jeffersons 1776 Declar tion of Indepen-
dence, We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal,
that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights . . .
James Madison remembered that when he drafted the rst ten amendments
to our Constitution, and in the rst session of the new nations Congress,
the Bill of Rights was ratied. The First Amendment alone held the rights of
freedom of religion, speech, press, the right to peaceably assemble, and the
right to petition the government for grievances.
Still, Americans differed in who they believed were entitled to those rights.
In the 1860s, a great war was fought within the nation over the question
of whether it should be lawful for one man to own another, and in 1865
the 13th Amendment was passed abolishing slavery, and the 14th in 1868
granted citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the U.S.A. In 1870
the 15th Amendment, which said that voting rights could not be denied on
the basis of race, was voted into law. It took another 50 years before voting
rights were extended to women in the 19th Amendment in 1920.
Throughout our nations history, men and women had to speak out to
gain the civil rights for all citizens that Jefferson spoke of in 1776. Sojourner
Truth, Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Abraham Lincoln, W.E.B.
DuBois, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton many spent their lives
trying to guarantee the rights of all Americans. The 1950s began another
period of Civil Rights acti ity when the Supreme Court ruled (1954) that state
or local laws requiring blacks to send their children to separate schools were
unconstitutional. A year later in Montgomery, a black seamstress named Rosa
Parks sparked a community-wide movement that helped spawn a national
leader when she refused to obey an Alabama law that required blacks to yield
their seats on buses to whites.
A young minister rose to her defense and organized a boycott of the citys
bus lines which lasted for 11 months during which time the buses there
ran nearly empty. The boycott ended with the Supreme Court ruling that
Alabamas segregation laws were unconstitutional. That young minister was
Martin Luther King, Jr. From 1956 to 1964, King spent his time preaching,
and marching, and writing about the injustices that still existed for black
citizens. In one year alone, he traveled 700,000 miles and delivered 200
speeches. In 1963 he delivered his famous I Have A Dream speech to a
crowd of 250,000 who had gathered in Washington, D.C. for the historic
March on Washington. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and
Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, followed by the Voting Rights
Act of 1965. Kings birthday, January 15, is now a national holiday, observed
this year on January 17.
Since 1776, this nation has struggled to live up to the ideals of our Con-
stitutions Bill of Rights. Ideals that say civil rights belong to all Americans,
rich or poor, of both sexes, and all races and religions. Those ideals will be
carried on by others who believe as Jefferson and others did.

Brad Dressen, Orland, was recently hon-
ored with a national achievement award
as the NATEF/ASE Instructor of the Year.
Forty automotive professionals from across
the nation were recognized at the Annual
Technician Awards of the National Insti-
tute for Automotive Service Excellence
(ASE) held at the Marriott City Center in
Charlotte, NC.
The ASE annual awards spotlight top
scorers on the ASE Certification Tests from
among the ranks of the more than 360,000
ASE-certified professionals nationwide.
Bill Kersten, President of the National Au-
tomotive Technicians Education Founda-
tion; Bill Bergen, NATEF Chairman; John
Pfennig, Chairman of the ASE Board of
Directors; and Timothy Zilke, ASE Presi-
dent & CEO, presented the award to Dres-
sen.
Brad is one of the outstanding ASE-
certified professionals recognized annual-
ly by different segments of the automotive
service and repair industry. Each of these
elite technicians was presented with an
industry-specific award recognizing their
achievement, said Zilke.
Brads wife Denise attended the cer-
emony to see him receive his award. Dres-
sen is employed by Butte College, and had
been a technician for 18 years before be-
coming an instructor 10 years ago. Hes
been an ASE certified technician for 15
years and has held ASE Master Automo-
bile Technician status since 1997.
ASE has been honoring the best of the
best in our industry for more than 30 years,
and this year we recognized 40 outstand-
ing individuals from all across the nation,
said Zilke. We are proud to partner with
NATEF to recognize Brads commitment
to excellence in providing the very best in

automotive technology instruction to the
students of Butte College. This dedication
is reflected in the talented individuals we
recognize each year and Brad represents
the best of the best.
Thirty different companies from both
OEM and Aftermarket segments spon-
sored the individual technician recognition
awards in the Auto, Truck, Collision and
Parts categories, along with three instruc-
tor awards. In addition to looking for top
scores on ASE tests, award sponsors ex-
amine on-the-job excellence, community
service and other factors when selecting
honorees.

experience to our students, said Dr. Kim-

The National Institute for Automotive
Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in
1972 as a non-profit, independent organi-
zation dedicated to improving the quality
of automotive service and repair through
voluntary testing and certification of auto-
motive professionals. More than 360,000
ASE-certified automobile, truck, and col-
lision repair technicians, and parts spe-
cialists work in dealerships, independent
shops, service stations, auto parts stores,
fleets, schools, and colleges.

Orovilles Old Time Fiddlers (California
State Old Time Fiddlers Association, Dis-
trict 1) is initiating an instruction program
of Fiddle Group Workshops to empower
individual acoustic musicians (fiddle, gui-
tar, banjo. bass, harmonica, mandolin, do-
bro) to perform in musical groups.
Playing with a group is an essential next
step for the individual musician. It turns
practice into shared fun and expands musi-
cal universes through collaboration. The
workshops will include Instrument-specif-
ic instruction in group playing and oppor-
tunities to practice and perform in groups.
These workshops will start at 7:00 p.m.
on Monday, Jan. 16th 2012 be held twice
Fiddlers Workshops Start Jan. 16
monthly at 7:00-9:00 p.m. on the 1st and
3rd Monday of each month at the Bolt Tool
Museum at 1650 Broderick Street in Oro-
ville, 95965. There will be a fee of $2.50
per person to cover the use of the facility.
These workshops will be CSOTFA Dis-
trict 1 Family Events (no alchohol, drugs
or rude behavior) open to the public.

In January, one of the rst things most
people think about is starting fresh for the
New Year, be it a new diet or some other
resolution that they declared at midnight
on December 31st. I am no different than
all those busy moms out there, looking at
January as a chance to start over and make
some changes that I can stick to and hop-
ing that by February I havent fallen back
into old habits. Of course I made my usual
resolutions; such as working out more,
eating better, or spending my money more
wisely (these resolutions are a given). But
this year I have also decided to make an-
other resolution: Downloading my fam-
ily photos and videos and actually doing
something with them!
If you are like me, you love to take pho-
tos of your kids doing all those great kid
things like playing with the dog or singing
in their school play. But I am also guilty of
leaving those photos on my camera. This
leaves me in a panic when I pull out my
camera at the honor roll assembly, and I am
busily deleting old pictures to make room
for new ones. The most recent downloads
for me consisted of some shots that went
back to my sons basketball season last
winter and concluded with my daughters
Christmas play last week. Sound famil-
iar?
So rst things rst, you must download
your digital shots to make room on your
camera ASAP. This is really so easy that
there should be no excuse for me not to do
it, but all you busy moms know that din-
ners and grocery shopping usually rank
higher on our list of things to do. For me,
I have found that I should download my
photos right after the event that I took the
pictures at, so that I am still excited about
it. Plugging the cord into the computer and
downloading only takes mere seconds and
I can label the shots right away instead of
trying to gure out what I am going to call
three hundred assorted photos from Easter
to Halloween.
Once you have the photos on your com-
puter, your options of doing something
with them are endless. Are you a big Face-
book fan? Then you may already be moti-
vated to download the current pictures onto
your page for others to see. Many people
I have talked to use Facebook primarily to
communicate with family members who
live far away who are unable to see you as
often as they would want to. They would
love to see your current photos and be up-
dated on what everyone is doing.
How about a slide show? I love the op-
tion of making a slide show on my comput-
er with all of my family photos. There is
nothing better than sitting at your comput-
er and watching all of your great memories
displayed on a big screen. I can get lost
in just watching my photos with the kids
and reliving those fun times. The bonus,
no bulky picture albums! Digital picture
frames are also another great option.
But if you are a tactile person, you may
still enjoy printing out your photos and put-
ting them into an album or scrapbook. If
you dont print them out on your computer
at home, you can send them online to your
local drugstore and pick up your prints in
about an hour. While online, you can also
create calendars, mouse pads, collages, t-
shirts or clocks to showcase some of those
unforgettable moments (like graduations
or birthdays).
Finally, dont forget to save your pho-
tos on a memory stick in the event that
your computer crashes. (I learned this
the hard way.) Memory sticks can range
from around $10 to $20 depending on how
much space you want. Another great tip,
save photos on the memory stick and give
it as a gift to grandparents or other fam-
ily members. You can also create a small
keepsake box or jar of that special occa-
sion that includes the stick with photos
from that event on it (vacation, weddings,
etc). The main point is to make the most of
those snapshots, and dont let another year
go by with a full camera like me!
