What is the Energy Saving Trust?

Over 15 years our initiatives have funded or influenced the installation of sustainable energy measures which will lead to lifetime savings of over 100 million tonnes of CO2.
Our purpose: working towards a low-carbon society The Energy Saving Trust works to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by encouraging people to take action to use energy more efficiently, conserve water, reduce / recycle waste, choose renewable sources of energy and opt for greener methods of travel at home and work. Our advice services offered across the UK provide practical solutions to environmental issues with enthusiasm and passion. We work with energy suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, builders and other trades to help ensure energy efficiency, renewables, water conservation and waste reduction information, services and products are available to consumers. We advise key stakeholders and decision-makers on environmental policy and initiatives including the UK Government, the devolved administrations, parliamentary select committees, the regulators and the media. We also work collaboratively with European partners to identify and share best practice, develop joint proposals for projects and work with our European counterparts through EnR (the European Energy Network) to collate evidence to inform EU policy making (www.enr-network.org). Our organisation The Energy Saving Trust is an independent, UK-based organisation focused on promoting action by individuals that leads to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions a key contributor to man-made climate change. We are the source of free advice and information for people across the UK looking to save energy, travel sustainably and generate renewable energy. We also help people to conserve water and reduce waste. We are impartial and not tied to any commercial organisations nor driven by political or corporate motives. We work with like-minded organisations in the public and private sector who wish to tackle climate change. We have teams based in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, whilst in England we have a regional structure. This means we deliver UK-wide programmes as well as country-specific programmes in each of the individual nations in the UK. We have 21 local advice centres which offer advice tailored to where people live, the type of home they live in, their circumstances and their household budget. We direct people to the right grants, for example for cavity walls, loft insulation and installing renewable energy sources. We are funded by the UK Government (DECC, DfT and BERR), Scottish Government, Welsh Assembly Government, European Commission and the private sector.

We want everyone to have a warm, well insulated home, wherever they live. Thats why I am encouraging everyone to take advantage of the help and advice from the Energy Saving Trust Gordon Brown UK Prime Minister

Our mission and vision Our mission is to lead 60 million people to act on climate change. Our vision for the future is for every home to be low carbon and for everyone to lead a low carbon lifestyle because they: Save energy. Buy the most energy-efficient products. Equip their homes with energy-saving products. Choose sustainable travel choices. Want renewable energy, including microgeneration. Conserve water. Reduce and recycle waste.

Knowledge and information

Intelligence to underpin your environmental initiatives The Energy Saving Trust understands peoples attitudes and behaviours on environmental issues. We understand the barriers and levers that encourage consumers to take action, or prevent them from doing so in everyday habits, routine purchases and capital items. We also understand which measures and which products save CO2. How? We own and have conducted numerous research studies examining consumer attitudes and behaviours towards environmental issues. Our Homes Energy Efficiency Database (HEED), contains information about the state of the UKs housing stock, showing: What energy saving measures such as insulation have been installed and where Where to target activity and reach communities with offers and initiatives The impact of marketing campaigns Green ambassadors environmentally engaged members of the public provide us with an ear to the ground on challenges and issues that surround living a low-carbon lifestyle. We have the knowledge and expertise to work out the financial and CO2 payback of investment in individual energy saving measures. We talk directly to over one million people a year through our local advice centres. As one of the leading consumer facing environmental organisations in the UK, the Energy Saving Trust is called upon by government, business and other organisations to provide independent insight and input on public policy and strategy. Why? We are the preferred partner for the UK and devolved governments, Regional Development Agencies and local authorities in delivering their consumer-facing environmental policies and helping them to achieve their carbon-savings goals. We are the provider of data to the Advertising Standards Agency, and are the only source used to assess advertisers environmental claims. We provide independent evidence-based policy analysis on household energy efficiency, low-carbon transport, mass market renewables and microgeneration. We undertake major research to inform our policy activities, which are underpinned by our comprehensive evidence base including detailed evaluations of our own activities. Our current research includes public engagement on climate change issues, existing and new build housing, microgeneration and low carbon transport. Other recent work also included smart metering, the language of climate change, the role of fiscal instruments in energy efficiency, vehicle excise duty and engagement with school children. We have seconded experts into the Policy Innovation Unit 2003 energy review work, the 2006 energy review, Scottish Government, Welsh Assembly Government, local authority activity, the Market Transformation Programme and the Government team charged with providing a response to the Biomass Task Force recommendations. We have participated in government steering groups for the Supplier Obligation, Energy Efficiency Innovation Review, and Personal Carbon Trading. We influence public policy by working closely with key stakeholders and decision-makers including the UK Government, the devolved administrations, parliamentary select committees, regulators and other agencies. We also work collaboratively with European partners to identify and share best practice, develop joint proposals for projects and work with our European counterparts through EnR (the European Energy Network) to collate evidence to inform EU policy making. We host the Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes, which is the meeting place for leading companies from the retail, manufacturer, installer, lighting and heating companies. With its wealth of experience and knowledge, the Energy Saving Trust can help provide companies and organisations with insight about measuring claims and giving evidence of their role in tackling climate change. The organisations we work with can be assured that we are independent and are committed to helping people reduce their CO2 emissions. How? We define the technical and other associated requirements to set certification standards for energy saving products and services. These could include, for example, compliance with industry standards, quality procedures and technical performance. We commission independent testing to verify that a broad range of products comply with our standards. These requirements relate to different areas: for example, energy and water consumption, thermal properties, air quality and CO2 emissions. We use testing laboratories that are UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) or Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) certified, or their equivalents in other countries. We test and evaluate the effectiveness of energy efficiency and microgeneration technologies in the home not just in simulated or laboratory situations, which means that consumers buying the products know that they will perform as claimed.

The Energy Saving Trust has been a valuable partner to P&Gs energy saving initiatives such as our award winning Ariel Turn To 30 campaign. Their expertise helps us validate our energy saving claims and provides credibility to our consumers. We value their honest appraisal of our initiatives and look forward to more collaboration in the future. Win Sakdinan Procter & Gamble, External Relations
