Chelsea man among holiday deaths

By Ben Baird
Heritage Media

Nathan Menge, a 32-yearold Chelsea resident and father of two girls, was among the victims of fatal traffic accidents during the holidays in Michigan. Fifteen people died in traffic crashes over the recent Christmas and New Years holidays based on preliminary reports from the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice

Information Center released Jan. 4. Menge died on Dec. 24. At about 2:04 a.m., he was driving on Waterloo Road near Roe Menge Road in Lyndon Township north of Chelsea when he lost control of his vehicle due to icy road conditions. Michigan State Police Trooper Duane Zook

said Menge was unable to negotiate a turn and went off road, striking a very large tree. Chelsea Fire Department and Huron Valley Ambulance arrived and found the vehicle against the tree on fire, he said. A resident in the area had heard the sound of the collision, gone outside and

saw the vehicle aflame, and then called 9-1-1. State police also responded. Menge was ejected from his vehicle, a 1999 Ford Ranger, on impact with the tree, Zook said. He said it appears Menge was killed instantly. Before responders arrived the resident who called 9-1-1 determined he was not breathing and had no pulse, Zook said. Menge was declared dead at 2:20 a.m. at the

scene, Zook said. He said the emergency responders tried to revitalize Menge for an extended period of time. Firefighters extinguished the vehicle fire. A memorial service was held for Menge on Dec. 28 at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea. Three of the traffic crash deaths reported statewide were pedestrians and one

he Chelsea grassroots organization One World One Family will present a free family concert in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 7 p.m. Jan. 16, Chelsea District Library, 221 S. Main St. Refreshments will be provided. The concert, Chelseas 10th annual celebration of MLK Day, is themed Music Makes a Difference Songs of Protest. Organizers wanted to do something different this year, said OWOF member Joanne Ladio. Previous MLK Jr Day celebrations have been quite elaborate and fantastic. We tossed around the idea of the Time Year of the Protester and the 99 percent movement and knew Dr. King would have supported these movements for economic equality. OWOF member Susan Lentz has wanted for several years to include songs from movements of years past and the idea suddenly clicked. Music has always been important to movements the Civil Rights Struggle, the peace movement, economic

protest in the depression. It brings people together. Weve always had very distinguished speakers but this seemed to be a perfect choice for us this year. When the musicians jumped on board quickly, we knew wed come up with something special. Were totally excited about the caliber of the musicians, regionally and nationally known artists, and all have a Chelsea connection. Buhalis, who will also serve as emcee, is an Ann Arbor-based performer, with music strongly influenced by Elvis, Guthrie, Springsteen, Dylan and others. The Detroit native has appeared on radios Acoustic Caf and has performed live at the Ark in Ann Arbor, throughout the Midwest, Northwest and beyond. Blues artists Shari Kane & Dave Steele met in 1991, when Kane was the partner of harmonica legend, Madcat Ruth, and Steele was leading the electric blues band, Big Dave and the Ultrasonics. The couple has performed at many local venues, including The Ark and the Ann Arbor Blues & Jazz Festival. Its always such an amazing and inspiring experience when you get

so many great musicians together on a bill, and then when its themed around something as wonderful as peace and freedom, its

that much more inspiring, Kane said. Well do some older blues/spirituals, probably from the great Reverend Gary Davis,

though we havent completely decided. Its been many years

Newspapers to supply video for newscast

Get ready for a local newscast that combines hyper-local news stories with televisions immediacy when WADL TV 38 and Journal Register Company, parent company to Heritage Media, partner to present the News @ 9 weekdays beginning Jan. 16. For me having been a news director, bringing together newspaper journalism and streaming video into a real partnership with TV is unique, said Steve Antoniotti, WADL TV 38 general manager. Antoniotti said he had seen others try to do this, but this will be much more integrated. The 9 p.m. newscast WADLs first will feature reporting and video coverage from reporters and videographers working at Heritage Media, The Oakland Press, Macomb Daily, Royal Oaks Daily Tribune and Mount Pleasants Morning Sun, as well as national and international news. Antoniotti said another major change for the locally owned station will be the addition of America Now, a 30-minute news magazine hosted by Leeza Gibbons and Bill Rancic. America Now will be broadcast 7:30 p.m. with a fresh show at 9:30 p.m. Gibbons worked as an anchor on Entertainment Tonight and hosted her own TV talk show. Rancic winner of Donald Trumps first Apprentice competition is an author and financial expert, and is married to Giuliana Rancic. The newscast, which also will feature Bloomberg financial news and sports reporting, will be anchored by Makenzi Henderson, and Macomb County native and meteorologist Eric Garlick. Viewers in the region need a 9 p.m. newscast, Antoniotti said. Thats because many dont arrive home in time to catch an early evening newscasts and others head to bed before the late shows. The News @ 9 is perfect for them, he said. Kevin Haezebroeck, senior vice president of Journal Register Company in Michigan, said, We are excited about the partnership with WADL TV 38. Our footprint in southeast Michigan matches up very well with WADL TV 38 in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties. We cover the top news of the day with extensive video reports in each of these markets, and it will be great to be able to expand the reach of our superb journalism.
