BUSINESS AND STUDY, HOW TO WIN BOTH OF THEM (In Perspective of Students Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta) By Canggih Mukjazat

(20090510050) Abstract Nowadays many young people confused with whether to choose between study and business. They thought that those two matters is one disturbing the other. In this research paper I will examine about tips and trick how to win both of them. This paper was conducted by qualitative methods using deep interview and observation through three informants of students Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta who have business beside their study. The informants was chosen from UMYs students (International Relations concern) with varieties of their entrepreneur fields. The analysis was done through descriptive-qualitative. The result shows that between both; study and business can succeeded altogether, while generally its very difficult for students to achieve both of them. 1. Introduction In recent years, the promotion of entrepreneurship as a great possible source of livelihood, job creation, empowerment and economic dynamism in this global era has attracted youngster to begin their own business. Therefore, now many of students especially universitys student was ran many enterprises and business as their part-time job beside their study. But the problem is when both between study and business, each of them need a great attention and also need more time to sacrifice due same time. So actually its begun to disturb and threaten each other.

As a beginner in entrepreneurship world the youngster will find many difficulties about how to manage their business and also managing themselves as a student. Business and study, both of them obviously need a lot of attention and sacrifice to win; therefore when a clash rises up between both of them it will confuse this beginner. So in this research paper I will try to find the answer to solve this classic problem for entrepreneur student (a student who runs an entrepreneurial activity). The research use qualitative method through observation and interview, asked the informants who run entrepreneurial activities among UMYs IR student about their tips and trick how to win both study and business. And they will answer the following question: 1. Why they choose to run entrepreneurial activity while they studying in university? 2. What is the biggest problem being both student and businessman? 3. And how they solve those problems? The informants have variety at their business. The first one was a real stock trading (a milk caf trader), the second one is a trader in services sector (a manager of an English Language Course), and the last was a trader in non real sector (a foreign exchange money trader). And also as a qualification three of them have their university grade (IP) above 3.00 points.

As the thesis statement for this research I would like to say that business is just like a laboratory for our study, so put aside the thought that say it will disturb our study. Business is just another class that teaches us about managerial, self maturity, social interaction, and problem management. These are three tips for winning both study and business: first, put your priority scale and be obedient for it. Second, it very important to know your capacity and capability limit and of course dont force yourself because it will destroy you. And the last is; discipline, patience and sense of responsibility three of them are the important qualities that must be owned for winning both study and business. And finally thats all the information about this research paper. Hopefully this research will provide and discover many solutions for one classic problem among entrepreneur student. I will quote one sentence from Bill Gates (the 1# richest man in the world verse Forbes Magazine) as a motivation for us: I failed in some subjects in exam, but my friend passed in all. 2. Literature Review

Entrepreneurship is more than simply starting a business. The definition of entrepreneurship is a process through which individuals identify opportunities, allocate resources, and create value. This creation of value is often through the identification of unmet needs or through the identification of opportunities for change.

Entrepreneurs see problems as opportunities, then take action to identify the solutions to those problems and the customers who will pay to have those problems solved.

Entrepreneurial success is simply a function of the ability of an entrepreneur to see these opportunities in the marketplace, initiate change (or take advantage of change) and create value through solutions.

3. Methods of Research Methodology. The Qualitative ways were chosen to collect the information to three UMYs student whose running a business. The student would be asked through interview into some questions upon the research question and the topic. The basic question is how they manage themselves to win both study and business? The list of questions and answer will be attached after this paper in appendix page. Informants. For several reasons I put the qualities for the informants in this paper. First, they have been registered as an active student of UMY at least for 4th semester. Second, they have been running the business at least one

semester (6 months). Third, they must have a minimum grade about 3.00 points in accumulative (IPK).

4. Results and Discussion Within interview I conducted to three students who had been running a small medium size business in the last semester I found many interesting matters and similarities among their answer about these following case: a. why they decide to conduct business during their study About the reason behind their action to held business during their studies, each of them has their own reason that motivates and pushes them to the point where they are standing right now. Holding a business during our study is not a simple matter that can decide lightly. Conducting business even in smallest size scale, need many things to be prepared; capital, mentality, selecting product, searching the potential place, market analysis, calculating the return of investment, choosing employees, etc. So obviously business and entrepreneur world isnt a simple thing that needs not only willingness but also great effort and patience. The first informants said that the reason behind his action was all about being independent, being acknowledged by his society, and another self centered reasons. The second one thought that business is about how to make a lot of money and how to help his family in lessening the burden from financial problem.

And the last person said that his motivation is to learn and to get experiences from his business. These are the statement from three of them (translated): I think its cool to conduct a business in our early age because people will see me as a worthy and dependable young man. Actually this business is kind a like awarded fun. (Laughing) Mr. Self Centered.

Business is about feeding myself and gets certain amount of money that can fulfill all my daily necessities. As you know my father passed away and my mother is just a housewife, so now I am being forced to become a leader in my family. Mr. Business Minded.

Simply, I just want to learn how to make money. Mr. Student Minded.

b. what is the common problem that come up in their business and study As we know that starting a business is not a simple matter. There are a lot of obstacles that will come to our daily life, such as: no good sell rate, the rises of stock ingredient price, bad weather, fluctuating social condition, etc. In these days most of businessmen and even an adult who had their mind focused on business only they are suffering stress and depression. So its only natural for youngster to get even more distressed because of their business moreover their study. The common problems that often come toward student businessman are about how to manage their time and how to manage the business they overtook during their study times. The clash of interest between study and business sometimes come up and got them distracted from one or another matter. Even once upon a time business matter is more important and more urgent than study.

Easily, youngster got bored when studying and they ignore it a lot. In my perception, different than study obviously business is more interesting and provides more challenge than study. The ability to manage the time actually holds on the most important part between the other. All of informants agreed about this time management as their biggest obstacle. They got troubled when the study and business problem came in a same time. These are the word that I quote from three informants (translated): Usually, when my business profits got down I am being unsatisfied, than I got challenged by myself to improve it. So easily I will sacrifice my study. At the time like that I wish I have more time for myself more than 24 hours in a day. Yes, actually it is bad for me but what can I do? Life is all about the choice, isnt it? Mr. Self Centered.

Of course there are a lot of obstacles in business such as bad weather like these few days. Beside those external matters I think time management is the most difficult one. I have a bad habit you know, that often I woke up very late even though I have an early class at that day. And in my perspective, business is more important than study. In the end our title is just for how to get the job. Mr. Business Minded.

I never come up with an idea that I will abandon my study. Business is just another extra-curricular for me. Because, so far both my study and my business all of them goes well. I am smart you know. About how I manage my time, I think setting up a priority scale will solve that problem. Mr. Student Minded.

c. tips and solution for those entrepreneur student Like I have mentioned before, the solution for those problems is summarized in three points: first, put your priority scale and be obedient for it.

Second, it very important to know your capacity and capability limit and of course dont force yourself because it will destroy you. And the last is; discipline, patience and sense of responsibility three of them are the important qualities that must be owned for winning both study and business. These are their statement about this case (translated): I think just be honest to yourself, enjoy whatever you are doing right now and of course dont force it. Knowing yourself about the limit and the capacity also hold another important point. And about time management, I think its very important too. Mr. Self Centered.

Knowing which is important and which is unimportant I think will solve the problem. Mr. Business Minded.

All we need is discipline, patience and high sense of responsibility to become both success student and businessman. And you should know the timing when we have to sacrifice one over the other. Mr. Student Minded.

5. Conclusion In my conclusion I would like to repeat to myself the key of how become a winner in study and business. When some problems come, just stay calm and try to analyze it so we can set up a solution and also set the priority scale toward this problem. Actually being tied man for ourselves is a very difficult task, but again; discipline, patience and high sense of responsibilities is another key point to win this war.
