World Heritage City
Karlskronas well preserved town plan,
wide baroque streets and parade buildings
resulted in UNESCO in 1998 designating it
a World Heritage site. Some parts of the
towns naval installations are still in use
today, 300 years after the town was
established. Its many citadels, fortresses
and powder magazines are popular
excursion destinations, with or without a
guide.
Karlskrona is built on several islands, the
centre being situated on the island of
Tross - 6 km out in the archipelago! In
total the town stands on more than 30
islands several of which can be reached by
car. In the summer months the
archipelago boats ply the waters between
several of the most popular excursion
destinations. Take advantage of the free
car ferry to Asp and why not hire a cycle
and discover the island.
The Marinmuseum is very popular with all
age groups. Other places to visit in
Karlskrona are the Konsthallen (Art
Gallery), the Konserthusteatern (Theatre)
as well as other galleries and museums
such as the Kulenovic Collection in the
historical Vattenborgen on Stortorget
(main square).
"Barnens roliga Karlskrona" offers a host of
smaller attractions within easy reach for
those with not such long legs. Barnens
Grd, Barnens Lekland, Boda Borg and the
Marinmuseum shipyard with super bathing,
the archipelago boats and Swedens
biggest ice cream together lay the ground
for the perfect holiday for the whole family.

Archipelago
Karlskrona archipelago - 1 600 islands,
islets and skerries.
There cant be much on earth that is more
pleasant to the eye and more liberating
than Karlskrona archipelago!
It is the most southerly of Swedens
archipelagos and the reason for the
existence of the town. Were it not for the
protection provided by the ring of large
and small islands, Karl XI would not have
chosen Tross as the location for his new
naval port. The islands, some linked by
road, some not, are inhabited by between
one and 1500 people. You can easily find
your own perfect spot, and enjoy it, for
there are plenty of them!
Furthest out in Blekinge countys east
archipelago lie the fascinating islands of
Inlngan, Utlngan and Stenhamn,
Ungskr and Hstholmen with landscapes
totally different to the lush environment of
the inner archipelago. Furthest out to the
south east lies Utklippan, to which special
guided tours are arranged during the
summer. Take the opportunity to visit this
unique location and seek out the seal
colony that is proliferating on these rocky
islands.

DO & SEE#DOANDSEE#
There is no end of things worth doing and
seeing in Karlskona. Many you can visit
independently, others must be visited with
a guide. Stroll the streets and experience
the towns modern day pulse blended with
its historical spirit, a fantastic combination
of past and present.I cant resist
mentioning the fact once again: The
Karlskrona archipelago is fantastic! Not
even the Russians in their U137 submarine
could resist paying a visit the sight of the
lush islands and the wave formed rocks
was too much for them. Then you
understand why both the locals and
thousands of tourists take themselves out
to the islands year after year.

Drottningskrs Kastell
Drottningskrs kastell (citadel) was largely
built during the last decade of the 17th
century and is considered one of Swedens
foremost defence constructions, a
complete and well preserved fortress from
Swedens period as a great power. The
citadel has a large castle keep in granite
with gun deck, powder magazine and
quarters. It has four bastions named after
the queens Maria, Christina, Hedvig and
Ulrica. The commandants quarters are in
the courtyard. The citadel was prepared for
war during various periods throughout the
18th century and up to 1811 with at the
most 250 men. Since 1895 Drottningskr
has not played an active part in the
Swedish defence system. Instead Asp
Ellenabbsfortet took over this role and was
equipped with heavy, armoured vessel
guns. You can get to Drottningskr citadel
all year round via the car ferry to Asp.
The archipelago boats call in there during
the summer. There is also a restaurant and
caf.

Lvmarket has been held for more than
200 years in one form or another.
In former times farmers travelled into town
to sell bushes and flowers that people
decorated their yards etc with. A lot of
vegetation and flowers are sold today also.
The market has grown over the years and
some 500 marketers now arrive to sell
their wares ranging from home-made
sweets and local delicacies to toys and
basketwork furniture. Many of Karlskronas
shopkeepers take the opportunity to join
the throng by setting up a sales counter
out on the street. Lvmarknaden takes
place on 23 June 2011.
Chamber Music Festival
Chamber Music Festival, 28 July - 2 August
2011. Peter Jablonski is the artistic director
for the festival with the motto "world music
in a world heritage", and one of the goals
is to bring to life Karlskronas fantastic
world heritage. This is done by, among
other things, holding concerts in several of
the world heritage buildings and in
connection with each concert tying that
music to Karlskronas history.
Hasslfestivalen
Hasslfestivalen 15-16 July 2011 is a
music festival in the archipelago for the
whole family; such artists as Eldkvarn,
September and Hoola Bandoola band will
be there.
