ABSTRACT
MLCP has been chosen as a case study in the present thesis owing to the fact that in metropolitan cities space has been one of the major constraints for vehicular parking. In the present study the first application deals with the analysis of MLCP using two prominent FEM (finite element method) based soft wares namely ETABS and STAAD.Pro. In STAAD.Pro application, the analysis of beams, analysis and design of flat slab, design of columns and footings has been carried out.

. The different components of the building have been designed by adopting Limit State Method. The provision of steel, concrete and other materials is as per IS 456-2000 specifications. The attempt has been made to have a safe, economical and aesthetic structure. A
detail comparison has been made between the applications. The comparison tables and their graphical representations have been discussed. Based on the results and discussions the conclusions have been drawn and the scope for the further study has been given.

1.2.1 OBJECTIVES OF MULTI LEVEL CAR PARKING SYSTEMS

The objectives of these multi level car parking systems are listed below. y To provide a unit in which cars are stored into and retrieved from addressed slots in simple, practical, safe, speedy, reliable, user-friendly and costeffective manner. y To deploy more number of relatively less expensive transfer modules for simultaneous operations on all parking floors for the optimum utilization of the highly expensive elevator and thereby ensure quick parking and retrieval. y To provide a system for storage and handling of the over-dimensional platform carriers automatically in safe, efficient, reliable, fast and cost effective manner to answer the present demands of fit-and-forget trend. y To open more entry/exit points to allow simultaneous placement of cars for parking/delivery without waiting. y To relocate the entry and exit points with ease to meet the peak hour demands besides meeting normal demands. y To receive a plurality of cars reporting for parking and to park the cars without pressure and to process a plurality of retrieval requests and to place

a plurality of retrieved cars to enable the clients to collect their vehicles without undue wait.

CHAPTER 2

LITERATURE REVIEW

In order to cater to the requirement of multi level car parking a brief literature review has been presented in the following sections.

2.1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Rapid growth rate of automobile industry in the world has forced the people to think

about parking spaces especially in the cities where there are constraints for horizontal growth. This is the main criterion which has led to the innovation of multi level parking s. Over the years there was multi level parking garages as the time has passed these multi level parking garages have turned in to multi level car parking s. In the developed nations and the developing nations the requirement for these multi level car parks has increased and has led to the invention of new categories of multi level car parking systems. These multi level car parks have been very efficient in decongesting the woes of traffic jams, parking problems, security reasons and the retrieval timings

1.2.2 ADVANTAGES OF MULTI LEVEL CAR PARKING

Cost effectiveness: Smaller footprint and volume; shorter construction time; no costly concrete repairs / maintenance; lower liability insurance.

Space optimization: The system occupies less than 20 percent of the conventional parking floor area and can even accommodate SUVs.

Faster retrieval time: The design incorporates faster retrieval time [average 90 seconds per car] to minimize the waiting period. This is done by a combination of quick response plc controls lifts, and turn-tables.

Convenience: there is no need for customers to search for parking space or to remember location of parked vehicle; the access interface is simple and userfriendly. The control software can be integrated with nearly any permit or pay system; there are no damages or scratches on vehicles during parking and retrieval.

Security: Theft and vandalism are eliminated as no one enters the garage area where vehicles are stored. Accidental damage and scratches to vehicles during parking and retrieval are eliminated thus giving value for money.

Aesthetics: modular construction allows the entire garage to be moved to meet

changing needs.

1.4 SCOPE OF WORK

In the present study, analysis of MLCP using two prominent fem based softwares has been performed by creating the three dimensional model of an MLCP. C programmes have been developed to design the multi level car parking parameters and the results obtained from all the soft wares and the results obtained from the C programmes have been compared
